The official guide to events, activities and offers taking place as part of the Isle of Wight Festival of the Sea
Citation preview
Saturday 14th to Sunday 22nd September
Events Guide
1
Welcome aboard! If you are lucky enough to live on the Isle of
Wight, you already know that being on a small
Island where the coast is never more than a
short drive away in every direction is one of
the very best things about being here. The
Solent and the open sea along the back of the
Wight is our castle moat, separating us from
the mainland and the rest of Europe.
As a visitor you’ll find that the sea is
everywhere; in our history, our art and culture,
our food and drink, the songs we sing, and the
work we do.
The Festival of the Sea attempts to bring
together some of those elements and
influences across the Island and share them
with visitors and local residents alike. You’ll
find some genuine hidden pearls and gems
within the pages of the guide, so please see as
much as you can, stay for as long as you can,
and come back soon...

Cowes, host to the world famous Cowes Week yachting regatta
Discover the Island’srich maritime history
Defence:A large number of forts and castles have defended the Island’s coast and the Solent from the time of Henry VIII onwards. You can still explore Yarmouth and later defences such as Needles Battery, Fort Victoria near Yarmouth, and Puckpool Battery at Ryde. In WWII PLUTO joined the Island to France from Shanklin Chine to supply fuel to the troops in mainland Europe.
Shipbuilding:This has always been a vital industry for the
Island. East Cowes built three decker “Ships of
the Line” in the 18th Century, 27 destroyers in
WWI and 26 in WWII. One of these was HMS
Cavalier and one of her old propellers can be
seen on East Cowes Seafront. The Hammerhead
Crane at Cowes, one of only three left in the UK,
was erected in 1911 and used to lift enormous
boilers into the newly built ships. Flying boats
and amphibious planes such as the Bat Boat
(1913) were also built here. The first hovercraft
was launched at the Columbine Works in East
Cowes in 1959.
Yachting:As well as being host to the world famous
Cowes Week yachting regatta, the Island was
home to one of the UK’s most famous boat
designers and yachtsman; Uffa Fox. His famous
airborne lifeboat can be found at The Classic
Boat Museum in East Cowes.
