Extraordinary, weird and wacky - Festival of Light brings free street theatre and incredible light installations to every corner of town.

This year, you are the star of the show! Expect a series of captivating and interactive light installations which allow you to be at the very heart of the festival performance.

In St George’s Square, (5-10pm Fri-Sat), help to create an amazing light show high above, using only your voice (expect one or two surprises here also!) and in the Open Market (Brook Street), get closer to a fireworks display than you ever thought possible, with a digital display that has to be seen to be believed!

Across the rest of town you’ll find street theatre amusing the crowds and animating the streets, live music, food and drink and much more.

Wrap up warm and join us for Huddersfield’s most spectacular weekend of the year!

Wondering when to visit? If you want to come when the festival is in full swing, we recommend you visit from 5pm on Friday and Saturday.On Sunday, the food & drink market and Art Arcade open at 12pm, and the festival finale is from 4.30pm.

Come and be part of an extraordinary, voice-activated light show where you control the action! Sing into the microphones and watch as you create a ceiling of animated colour above you.

Prepare for some surprises here over the course of Friday and Saturday evenings!

Whilst you’re here...

Get up close and personal with a digital fireworks display that you control! Touch the bright orbs of light to fire an array of gorgeous, multi-coloured rockets. Virtual pyrotechnics are projected onto a massive 60 foot wide screen using state of the art projectors and lasers.

Currently wowing audiences up and down the country, this is one firework display you won’t want to miss. None of the worry, and definitely no ‘stand well back’ needed, let the kids (and grown-ups) loose in deciding which rockets to fire when!

Phosphène is an amazing, interactive graffiti shadow wall.

Leave a lasting imprint on the festival- strike a pose, and watch as your shape is projected onto a large screen. Bring out your inner artist by using pens to create a luminous graffiti wall: truly mesmerising!

Roll up, roll up…to the Byram Arcade to experience all the fun of the fair- with a 21st Century twist!

The Digital Funfair is a mash-up of popular culture, technology and the thrill of the fairground. Featuring the ‘Pac-Bike’ (a series of classic arcade games such as Pacman and Space Invaders, moderated to be played by bike) and the semi-automatic dj-ing table ‘Beat Jigsaw’, Digital Funfair is a space to play which sparks the imagination.

Funny, peculiar and pure unadulterated fun.

DIGITAL FUNFAIR Fri and Sat 5pm to 10pm Byram Arcade

Wander through St Peter’s Gardens, and be mesmerised by Chorus, an impressive installation of kinetic sound sculptures by artist, composer and performer Ray Lee.

Towering high above the audience, giant metal tripods with rotating arms sing out to create a pulsating, harmonic drone. Red lights whirl, tracing intersecting rings above the heads of the audience. The combined effect of the spinning speakers and lights, creates an unforgettable and unique experience.

Located beside the winter food and drink market, grab yourself a hot chocolate (or something stronger), and lose yourself in this enchanting spectacle.

Brought to you by the organisers of Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival, our fantastic winter food and drink market is the perfect place to take a breather and fill up with some hot and tasty food and drink whilst you plan what part of the festival you want to see next. Over 20 stalls will be selling food and drink to enjoy there or take home for later.

Catch live music from our amazing buskers during the day, and some of our street bands in the evening as they pass by while you refuel, then wander up towards John William Street to see some of our street performers, until you’re ready to explore more of what the Festival of Light has to offer.

Laugh until your sides hurt at some of the UK’s best street entertainers as they delight, amaze and sometimes confuse! Their performances are guaranteed to have you talking about them long after the festival is over!

Harlequin Dynamite - Serving up a collision of genres which is part New Orleans Dixie ensemble, part street-punk riot and part Yorkshire Tea advert to create leg-swingingly pleasurable grooves.

Jones & Barnard - A seasonal, theatrically comic variety show featuring spinning Christmas Puddings, a festive soundtrack and amazing variety stunts.

Mr Wilson’s Secondliners - New Orleans meets 90s club classics; this band rallies impromptu raves on street corners, rousing audiences into a joyful frenzy.

Panfire Steelband - Witness the power and beauty of Steel Music. Panfire Steelband play a recognisable repertoire of music from around the globe.

Reckless Invention - To a rousing soundtrack of all time classics, Reckless Invention conjure adolescent admiration with a hilarious homage to boybands.

Shandy South - Shandy South is a unique, slick combination of street dance, mime and stand up. Get ready for a funky, theatrical extravaganza.

Stilt Batteristas - Stilt Batteristas combine unique instruments, costumes and street rhythms with some dazzling stilt choreography.

Huddersfield’s streets become home to a vast array of British and international street performers during the festival. Some will want to chat and others will just want to entertain!

Canopy: The Dolly Birds - Singing their hearts out, in the face of adversity, these girls generously share their fantastic repertoire of Dolly’s greatest hits in a cappella.

Canopy: The Preeners - The Preeners bring you comedy characters, sensationally sparkly animated costumes and a healthy dollop of audience participation.

Curious Cargo: The Lost Luggage Porters (Sat only) - Their enthusiasm to assist you with your bags may leave you carrying all the luggage!

Curious Eyebrows: Blite - High-energy street performers blending hilarious comedy and astounding circus skills.

Flying Buttresses: Hodman Dodmanott & Sally Forth - This memorable puppet couple bring laughter and joy wherever they go.

Fool’s Company: Jack on the Green (Fri only) - A theatrical storytelling that will have you questioning everything that you ever thought you knew about Britain’s best loved folk hero.

Frolicked: Tabitha - This lively servant-maid ghost from the Victorian era is available for hauntings, waltzing and a light dusting of any building or dwelling (or person).

Frumptarn Guggen Band - Hear songs guaranteed to get you up off your feet, played in the Swiss and German Guggen tradition. Audience participation is mandatory!

Handmade Parade Dragon / Moon & Stars - Meet giant illuminated puppets from the Handmade Parade, including the moon, stars and a fierce river dragon.

Kirklees Music School - Kirklees Youth Brass Band, Colne Valley MC Intermediate Band and Kirklees Youth Soul Band will entertain the crowds across the weekend.

Perhaps Contraption - Blending elements of art rock and oompah, Perhaps Contraption is an astonishing marching band, whose music is full of joyous choral harmonies, choreography and irresistible grooves.

An outdoor music stage at the bottom of King Street will host live sessions from local bands and musicians. So treat yourself to an al fresco pint or glass of wine, and keep warm by having a boogie to some of the best acts in the area.

S2R family art activityFri and Sat - 2pm to 6pm Packhorse Centre

Visit the Packhorse Centre from 2pm Friday and Saturday, where the S2R Gallery will be providing a paint by numbers activity for all of the family to enjoy.

The finished piece of artwork will depict Huddersfield’s rich cultural heritage and will be exhibited in the Packhorse Centre long after the Festival ends. Come down and help to create a piece of locally-themed artwork which will be viewed for years to come. The Packhorse Centre will be staying open until 6.30pm on Friday and Saturday night. With over 40 shops to visit, why not do a spot of shopping too; whatever the weather, it will be warm and dry!

Visit the Art Arcade in the Lord Street Mission where you will find unique gifts for your friends and family (or special treats for yourself) from some of Yorkshire’s finest artists.

Artists will be filling the mission hall with colour, creativity, chic, quirky and beautiful imagery. From photographs, drawings, paintings, prints, ceramics and carvings, there is something to appeal to all tastes and all pockets.

Drop into the Town Hall on Saturday to visit the award winning Britain Does Vintage, returning for a Christmas special!

Whether you’re after an affordable vintage dress for the Christmas party, or looking for the perfect gift, pop in to Huddersfield Does Vintage to discover the gems on offer.

Go Upmarket on Sunday at the Open Market and browse over 80 stalls selling antiques, collectibles, and arts and crafts.

Try contemporary and vintage fashions for size; then sample Yorkshire food and drink. With live music and children’s creative workshops, this is a perfect way to round off a fabulous weekend before heading up to St.George’s Square for the Festival Finale.

Come back and join us for our fabulous festival finale. The University of Huddersfield Brass Band will be performing a Christmas concert full of festive favourites and will close with a magnificent firework display. Guaranteed to kick-start your Christmas celebrations.

Parking Spring Wood and the Market Hall car parks are open 24 hours and the Bus Station car park will remain open until 11pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. As it is December, the car parks will be free on Sunday.

Road Closures Due to some of the performances and events taking place, a number of roads in the town centre will be closed during the festival. Full details of which roads are affected are available from the website - see below.

Access to railway station Access to the railway station car park and pick-up/drop off points will be unavailable from 3pm on Friday/Saturday and 2pm on Sunday until midnight.

A temporary drop-off point is on the junction of John William Street and Brook Street. We suggest you leave extra time for your journey.

Accessibility Wheelchair accessible portable toilets will be available on Station Street during the festival.
