Need to know: Rival artists are forced to perform an opera and a comedy routine simultaneously in this tale of a clash between high and low culture. Ariadne auf Naxos is a firm Festival favourite, and is the most performed Strauss work at Glyndebourne.

Why this production? This production sets Strauss’s story in a 1940s English country house, and draws inspiration from Glyndebourne’s own history.

Cast and creative team: This production will see the Glyndebourne debut of Norwegian rising star Lise Davidsen who will sing the title role. Conducting will be Cornelius Meister, in his Glyndebourne debut.

Things to look out for: Strauss’s lush and lyrical music features a number of vocally challenging stand-out arias, demanding virtuosic singing from the cast.

wolfgang amadeus mozart La clemenza di Tito

Spurned by Tito, Vitellia seeks revenge. Besotted Sesto agrees to avenge her as a token of his love, but all does not go to plan.

Need to know: La clemenza di Tito was one of Mozart’s last completed works and tells a striking tale of love, friendship, vengeance and mercy in the court of the Roman Emperor Tito.

Why this production? While Mozart has always had a special connection with Glyndebourne, there has only been one previous production of La clemenza di Tito, making 2017 a rare treat. This will be renowned German director Claus Guth’s first Glyndebourne production.

Cast and creative team: Glyndebourne’s Music Director Robin Ticciati will conduct. Australian tenor Steve Davislim makes his Glyndebourne debut in the title role, accompanied by Alice Coote as Vitellia and Kate Lindsey as Sesto.

Things to look out for: Keep an eye out for some inventive staging that will reveal new sides to the story and the characters.
