ANGLO.JEWISH ARTISTS 1851.1951

When the Ben Uri Jewish Art Society was fo-ed in London during the firstworld war by the refugee artist Berson and some of his Whitechapel friends. theycould not have foreseen that 35 years later the Ben Uri would, through the fact thatit has dL IJermanent gallery| be able tO house this Anglo-Jewish Art Exhibitionarranged in connection with the Festival of Britain. One only wishes that itspremises were larger. to have allowed for more examples to be shown of the artistswho have worked in Anglo-Jewry during these hundred years. But within thelimits of the space, the examples that are being shown here testify to the place andthe importance of the artist in Anglo-Jewish life. one hopes that the communitywill be so impressed by these exhibits that it will support the work of the Ben Uri,to enable it at a later date to organise a larger and more comprehensive showingof the works of the Anglo-Jewish artists.

The-first comprehensive Jewish Art Exhibition held in this country was in l906at the lhThitechapel Art Gallery. ..Never before." vIOte the Jew.ch War/d,®I has there been a collection of pictures by Jewish artists. and we may say that

the whitechapel Exhibition has definitely settled the place of Jews in the pictorialand plastic arts." The Anglo-Jewish Exhibition at the Albert Hall in l887 had notattempted an exhibition of the work of Jewish artists. It had paintings and draw-ings. engravings and caricatures. but they were mearlt to show portraits of Anglo-Jewish worthies. rather than creative art.

Another important exhibition of the work of Jewish artists was held in Glasgowin February' 195l. as part of the Glasgow Festival of Jewish Arts. But both atWhitechapel and in Glasgow there were not only Anglo-Jewish artists, but alsowhat M. H. Spielmann called a.a number of foreign artists of repute who havejoined their English brethren to stiffen their ranks."

The present Exhibition is designed to show the contribution of Jewish artistsliving and working all or most of their life in Great Britain and the BritishDonrinions.

The earliest Anglo-Jewish artist seems to have been Abraham Ezekiel, bom inl757. in Exeter. where he died in l806. According to Joseph Jacobs. he engravedpaintings by Reynolds. Opie and others, and was also known as a miniaturepainter. Cecil Roth calls him '. the eminent miniature painter and engraver."Another English engraver was Solomon Bennett. who was bom in Russia.. beforel780." but spent the latter part of his life in Bristol. He was also a theologian.who began to publish a completely revised translation of the English Bible in l84l.but abandoned the project after only two numbers had appeared. His '' Temple ofEzekiel" contains a portrait of himself which he engraved after a painting byFrazer.

But the first important Anglo-Jewish artist was Solomon Alexander Hart. whowas bom in plymouth in l806. the year of Abraham Ezekiel's death. It is ofinterest that his father, samuel Hart. and his older brother Mordecai, both studiedart and were well-known engravers. Hart was the first Jewish R.A., being electedin 1840. He was in l854-l863 Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy' andin l864 became Librarian to the Royal Academy. He was a friend\of Tuner andother famous artists, and tells interesting stories about them in his publishedreminiscences. He painted a number of Jewish subjects, including '. The Elevationof the Law," in the National Gallery, and.' The Conference between MenassehBen Israel and Oliver Cromwell." at Jews' College.

An interesting trio are Simeon Solomon, the pre-Raphaelite painter (l834-l905),his brother Abraham Solomon (l824.l862). who was famous for his railway paint.ings. and was elected an A.R.A.. but received the news of his election on his deathbed. and their sister, Rebecca Solomon. who exhibited for many years at the RoyalAcademy. M. H. Spielmann ranked her high above Abraham Solomon. and saidshe was second only to her brother Simeon:.I she had the instinct of the true artist."

Another famous artist is Solomon Joseph Solomon (l860-1927). He was norelation of the solomon trio. He was the second Jew to become an R.A. Hisbest-known picture is '6Samson and Delilah.'' His portraits include IsraelZangwill. the Jewish historian Graetz, Dr. Solomon Schechter. and Joseph Jacobs. His sister, Mrs. Delissa Joseph. was a gifted painter, and is represented in the TaleGallery. Historically. a considerable place is held by B. S. Marks. born in l827m Cardiff. He was for many years the fashionable Jewish portrait painter.

A number of the young artists who showed at the Whitechapel Exhibition ofI906 have since established themselves in the world of art. notably Sir WilliamRothenstein. who exhibited there several synagQgue Paintings, and Alfred Wolmark.of whom M. H. Spielmann foretold in that year. "He will become a personage inthe world of art..I

Jacob Epstein. who was bom in New York, came to London the following year.l907, when he was commissioned to do the carvings for the British MedicalAssociation building in the Strand. He has for many years been a towering figureamong the artists of Anglo-Jewry. Another famous Jewish sculptor. HenryGlicenstein. exhibited in London from l905. and for about five years. from l920.lived in London and exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere. But hefinally went to live in New York. where he died. Leopold Pilichowsky, too. wasamong the foreign artists exhibiting at the l90.6 Jewish Exhibition in Whitechapel. He settled in London during the l914 war and remained in England for the restof his life, till his death in l933.

A great Jewish painter who spent some time in England as a refugee from the1870 Franco-Geman war. was Camille PissaITO. His son, Lucien Pissarro. spent

most of his life in London and died here, and he and his daughter, orovidaPissarro. are counted among the Anglo-Jewish painters. Josef Israels, son, thepainter Isaac Israels. was also a London resident for some years.

Other Anglo-Jewish artists of the early twentieth century include J. H.Amshewitz, Henry Ospovat, Isaac Snowman, Frank Emanuel, Albert Rutherston,James L. Henry, J. Oppenheimer. Mark Zangwill. Mrs. Mary Raphael. Flora Lion,Ellen Gertrude Cohen, Mayer KIang, Arthur Friedenson, Alfred Pragor andLouis Conrad.

Succeeding them, about l9ll-l912, came a group of very talented artists, DavidBomberg. Mark Gertler. Jacob Kramer' Isaac Rosenberg, Bemard Meninsky.Philip Naviasky, Clara Winsten, and two ol. three years later' clara Klinghoffer.who was bom in London and studied at the slade, but is now living in New York.

A word should be said of the Dominion artists, the Australian E. Phillips Fox.and the South Africans Moses Kottler, Lippy Lipschitz' and lrma Stem.

The war also brought to this country Jankel Adler, who worked llere for someyears and died in 1949. Several other artists have settled jn England, mostly asa result of the Hitler persecution and the war. and have become naturalised andare a part of Anglo-Jewish life. They include Benno Elkan, Benno Schotz,Abraham Lozoff. Abraham Melnikoff, Max Sokol, Alva. Hans Feibusch, andJosef Herman.

Anglo.Jewry can show a very interesting collection of artists. among themsomeof whom it should be extremely proud. '' We take leave of this epoch-makingExhibition of Jewish Art, the first that has ever been held," M. H. Spielmann wroteof the l906 Exhibition,.I with the conviction that when at some future time asecond such collection will be brought together, Jewish artists will have proved thetruth of the contention here more than once set forth, that in the near future theywill justify themselves in the pictorial arts."

In the 45 years that have passed since this was written. the artists jn Anglo-Jewry have indeed justified themselves; and this showing of some of their worksis a revealing and gratifying manifestation of Anglo-Jewish achievement in thefield of art. It is to be hoped that the Ben Uri Society will receive the supportof the community to enable it at some later date to carry out the intention oforganising a larger Anglo-Jewish Art Exhibition, where these artists can be repre.sented by more examples of their work to convey a fuller understanding of their

quality.
