McALLEN ACTRESS MARISA QUINTANILLA PLAYS A PIVOTAL ROLE IN THE FINAL ‘TWILIGHT’ MOVIE

wilight” already has one McAllen native tied to the movie se-ries, and now there

are two. McAllen born Marisa Quintanilla scored the role as the vampire Huilen in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.”

“Never in a million years would I have even guessed it, you know?” she said. “It was amaz-ing.”

She was a fan before she au-ditioned for the role, which she snagged quickly, though she didn’t know she was cast until months afterward.

“I was introduced (to “Twi-light”) by my sisters, and my sisters are quite a bit younger than me, and they introduced me to the movies,” Quintanilla said. “And I thought it was really silly at fi rst … and then I watched them and was in love with them and couldn’t wait to see the next one.”

Those who have read the books know how important the role of Huilen is. And though the “Twi-light” saga is offi cially over with the release of “Breaking Dawn,” there’s a lot of back story author Stephanie Meyer could explore.

If Meyer does change her mind and revisits the “Twilight” uni-verse of vampires, shapeshifters and humans, perhaps it could mean more screen time for Quintanilla as Huilen.

“Fingers crossed, believe me, it was discussed on set with the boy that plays my nephew,” she said. “We were like, I mean, come on, they have to do anoth-er movie, or at least a webisode about these characters. There’s like, a whole world that they could talk about.”

After graduating from Brown University in Rhode Island and

spending some time doing the-ater in New York City, in 2004, Quintanilla headed for Holly-wood. Quintanilla’s family still lives in the Valley and has been watching over the years as she has made appearances in their favorite TV shows and movies. Earlier this year, Quintanilla had a part on “The Young and the Restless,” her mom’s and grand-mother’s favorite soap opera.

“I think the best part was, I’ve always wanted to be in movies, fi lm, TV and anything my family would get really excited about, and this year has been really awesome for that,” she said.

She worked directly with Rob-ert Pattinson (Edward) and Kris-tin Stewart (Bella).

“It was surprisingly amazing and easy and just so easy, breezy, cool and casual,” she said. “They had no attitude; everybody on the set was just kind, generous and in a way that I was just really taken aback by because these people are so famous.”

In spite of how some media paint Stewart out to be a snob, she was anything but, Quinta-nilla said.

“She was just the sweetest thing. She was really nice and shy, if anything,” she said. “She’s so much like (her) character: shy, a little awkward — in the cutest, most endearing kind of way.”

And Quintanilla had nothing but praise for Pattinson, too.

“Rob, as well, (was) just so nice and soft-spoken. Neither of them is ever loud or getting all the attention or anything like that on set,” Quintanilla said. “They’re just really quiet and do their job and nice to everyone.”

Filming for “Breaking Dawn” has already wrapped, and Quin-tanilla is currently working on

a television pilot with a couple of other women with whom she started a production company with. “The Twilight Saga: Break-ing Dawn — Part 2” will be re-leased Nov. 16, 2012.

“We’re getting ready to shoot next month,” she said. “We have to keep it really quiet, but I can tell you that it’s the comic quest of three beautiful girls in Los Ange-les and they’re up to some really fun things. It’s all about great fun, vintage fashion and food.”

In the meantime, you can catch Quintanilla on TV almost every-where in a McDonald’s com-mercial about the mango-pineapple smoothie.

10F THE MONITOR | FRIDAY, SEPT. 2, 2011FESTIVA.THEMONITOR.COM

s electronic music takes over the airwaves and continues to top the charts, the Valley is slowly becoming another popular des-

tination for electronic music acts. On the heels of DeadMau5 and Tiësto’s recent visits, music giant Paul van Dyk will take the stage Saturday night at the newly remodeled Pharr Events Center.

The German mixmaster has largely been lauded as one of the biggest names in elec-tronic music. With more than 4.5 million al-bums sold, the DJ who began spinning trance records in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s has stood the test of time, releasing remixes for artists such as Depeche Mode, Justin Timber-lake and Britney Spears.

The electronic music genre has come a long way since its beginnings in the early ‘90s. These days, popular artists are incorporating trance, house and dub step into pop and hip hop.

One look at this Sunday’s TV ratings reveals just how popular electronic music is becom-ing. More than 12 million people tuned into last Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, where DJ AfroJack’s collaboration with Ne-Yo and Pit-bull “Give Me Everything” took the stage, as well as Chris Brown’s collaboration with Italian DJ Benny Benassi “Beautiful People.”

“Electronica, house, trance and all that good stuff is just today’s hit music with vocals,” Van Dyk fan Crystal Espinoza said. “House/dance music is the in thing. You even fi nd it on ‘Jer-sey Shore.’”

But while the majority of pop fans might be embracing the genre, some criticize it. Bobby Villarreal admits he enjoys electronic music, but he still acknowledges the difference be-tween a DJ and an actual musician.

“I’m sure DJing and mixing, or whatever the heck still requires some sort of musical know how and skill,” Villarreal said.

“But it cannot compare to someone that can write on an instrument.”

WHERE DIDALIO GO?LAVISH NIGHTCLUB STILL A NO-SHOW INMcALLEN’S ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT

From the team who brought you Chill Lounge and Kai was supposed to come this amazing two story res-taurant built right in the center of 17th street. Looking at the render-ings from their designer, I presume, the place would have looked beautiful if it was ever built.

South 17th Investments, the origi-nal managing company of the Kai, Chill and Alio brands was supposed to dominate downtown from every aspect.

Chill was their small(ish) club to have a strong weekday crowd and at-tract the “older crowd” with ‘70s and ‘80s music.

Kai was supposed to be their mega club and event center to have huge lines on the weekend and Alio ... oh Alio was planned to be their top notch classy restaurant and lounge.

Chill closed months ago. After a few weeks of trying to do their ‘70s thing, they resorted to top 40 music and Z-list promoters and never did anything special.

Kai has been closed for over a month. From what I heard it’s not because they weren’t making money. Internal issues are keeping it from re-opening. There is sign outside saying that they are remodeling. I wonder if anything will be remodeled when/if it’s reopened.

Alio never had a chance for failure … I mean success.

Note: Just because the renderings above look amazing it doesn’t mean that Alio would have looked anything like it. I remember when Kai was be-ing promoted before their opening, their MySpace had pictures that made me think the venue would look like a multi-million dollar club from Vegas.

Unfortunately when I went there on their opening night their tables were made from Home Depot plywood which had been freshly spray painted black, the fl oor was grey cement and the couches didn’t even look nice enough to be sold at Ikea.

Maybe we didn’t miss anything.
