When this local church was estab-lished almost 50 years ago, its leadership wanted to be certain that, no matter the economic circumstances, everyone within its doors at Christmas time received at least a small gift: a bag containing an apple, an orange, and a candy cane. Many a Christmas Day salad has been made with this fresh fruit, served along with an extra candy treat. Please get yours from the foyer as you leave, with our thanks for your pres-ence here tonight, and with our wishes for a wonderful holiday season. Take time to contemplate God’s com-ing to earth, offering us the gift of His life and love. He showed this love by living a sinless, perfect life, sacrificing it on the cross to pay for our sinful imper-fection, and rising again from the dead, proving His power over death. If you haven’t yet, please repent and accept this ultimate gift of salvation, beginning an eternal relationship with Jesus Christ, trusting Him alone for salvation.

Weekly Catechism Question

Question #32: What do we mean by Christ’s exalta-tion? Answer: By Christ’s exaltation we mean his ris-ing again from the dead on the third day, ascending up into heaven, sitting at the right hand of God the Father, and coming to judge the world at the last day. Articles Christ Was Born for More Than Death By Amy Mantravadi - edited for space As we near that magical day when children will eat far too many sweets and par-ents will get far too little sleep, we are continually reminded that the Christmas sea-son isn’t just about Santa Claus, elves, and reindeer. Slogans such as “Put Christ back in Christmas!” and “Jesus is the reason for the season!” abound, all of them meant to call our minds back to the true meaning of the holiday. One saying that seems to have a stronger theological grounding is some variation on the following: “Jesus Christ was born in order to die.” The motivation behind this choice of phrase is a good one. While the manger, angels, and donkey are all nice, the story of Christmas cannot be properly told without mentioning the prob-lem Jesus came to solve. He was not born merely to proclaim peace on earth and goodwill toward men. Rather, He came to save us from our deadliest enemy: sin. The peace He brought us is not a temporary, earthly one, but rather an eternal, heavenly one. He made it possible for us to be permanently at peace with God. Therefore, it is entirely appropriate and even necessary to link the incarnation of Jesus Christ with His atonement. The first step in appreciating Christmas is to un-derstand that the Son of God took on flesh to make an end of death and sin. His sacrifice allows us to be forgiven. We must never lose sight of that fact or diminish its importance. Nevertheless, stating that Jesus was born to die puts us in danger of minimiz-ing other parts of His work that were equally important and necessary. The Son of God became incarnate as a human being not only to remove our sin, but also to make us righteous. Go back to the Garden of Eden, Adam was created without a sinful nature. He did not need God’s forgiveness, for he had never transgressed God’s laws. How-ever, God also gave him a commission to fulfill. “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28b) This is our one recorded example of the fact that Adam was expected to positively fulfill God’s commands by doing righteous deeds, in addition to abstaining from unrighteous deeds (not eating from the wrong tree). What does this mean? It means that while the sinless Adam did not merit eternal punishment, there was still something he lacked: righteous deeds, also known as good works. Now, you might be thinking, “No, no, no! God doesn’t require us to do good works in order to gain eternal life.” Well, yes and no. God actually does expect us to do good works, but He knows that is impossible for fallen human be-ings. With our souls chained to sin and our hearts unyielding to the Spirit’s call, we fulfill the words of the Psalmist: “There is no one who does good, not even one.” (Psalm 14:3b) We need righteous deeds in order to be declared “just” by God, but we have no ability to perform them in our flesh. Therefore, it was necessary for someone else to

Page 11: Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church - Amazon S3 · 12/24/2017  · Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church 10050 Ferguson Avenue v Savannah, Georgia 31406 Bob Dimmitt Pastor 912-398-4363 ... Youth,

11

stand in our place and fulfill God’s commands on our behalf, so we might be cred-ited with that righteousness by faith. The one who did this was Jesus Christ, the second and better Adam. Many verses testify to Christ’s obedience and the way it was imputed (transferred) to believers. When Jesus went to be baptized by John, His cousin asked Him why such a thing was necessary. John had been preaching a baptism connected with repentance and forgiveness. As Jesus had no sins, He did not need to repent. However, Christ told John, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:15b) This is because Jesus’ righteous-ness was not merely about avoiding sin; it was also about positively doing the good works prepared by His Father. Jesus fulfilled every one of the commands in the Mosaic Covenant. He fulfilled every bit of God’s moral law. Because He was without sin, His deeds were truly pure. Unlike the supposed good works performed by humans deep in iniquity, Je-sus’ good works were actually good. While Adam passed on sin to all who were bound to him, Christ passes on righteousness. Read Romans 5:12-17 The Apostle Paul taught that in order to be justified before God (that is, declared righteous), we needed to receive righteousness from someone else. Righteousness is absolutely required for a person to be declared “just” by God the Father. However, the error is in the assumption that the righteousness that justifies us is our own. In fact, it is Christ’s imputed righteousness that allows us to be justified. Paul points to the example of Abraham as proof that we must have righteousness credited to us by faith. “For what does the Scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.’ Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness…” (Romans 4:3-5) Unrighteous people are credited with the righteousness of Jesus Christ by faith, and it is this righteous-ness that justifies them. Our salvation depends upon this double exchange. Our sin was imputed to Christ when He was nailed to the cross. In addition, Christ’s righteousness was imputed to us. (2 Corinthians 5:21) Therefore, sin is removed from our account and righteous-ness is credited, allowing us to be legally declared just. When you understand this double exchange, you begin to see how important every moment in Jesus’ earthly life was. It would not have been sufficient for Him to be born and then immediately killed. He had to live a life in which He not only abstained from sinful deeds, but also performed righteous deeds. He never lied, but He always proclaimed the truth. He was never unduly prideful, and He actively took steps to humble Himself before men. He never acted in hate, but He continu-ally showed love to all. He also completed every ceremonial requirement in the Mosaic Law. Had He not kept all of the ceremonial requirements, He could not have been the perfect Savior for those under the Law in addition to those who were not. Every moment of His life had to be perfectly righteous, both actively and passively—both in doing and not doing. Therefore, saying that Jesus “lived to die” only tells half the story. His death would have been all for naught without His perfect life. Moreover, His death had to be followed by His resurrection for three reasons: as a proof of His saving work, as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy, and as part of His promised exaltation. Yes, the

Page 12: Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church - Amazon S3 · 12/24/2017  · Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church 10050 Ferguson Avenue v Savannah, Georgia 31406 Bob Dimmitt Pastor 912-398-4363 ... Youth,

12

resurrection was necessary, and so was the ascension, for we need Him standing at the right hand of the Father as our perfect Mediator. There is no part of Christ’s saving work that stands alone. God ordained it all for a reason. Yes, Jesus Christ was born to die, but He was also born to live. Every part of His work was necessary, and we would do well to remember that this Christmas sea-son. The double exchange is the source of our righteousness. We thank God for Jesus’ amazing gifts to us in His life, death, resurrection, and continuing reign. Must Christians Believe in the Virgin Birth? Christians must face the fact that a denial of the virgin birth is a denial of Jesus as the Christ. Written by Albert Mohler – edited for space With December 25 fast approaching, the secular media turns their interest to the virgin birth. Every Christmas, weekly news magazines and various editorialists en-gage in a collective gasp that so many Americans could believe such an unscientific, supernatural doctrine. For some, the belief that Jesus Christ was born of a virgin is nothing less than evidence of intellectual dimness. Does belief in the virgin birth make Christians “less intellectual?” Are we saddled with an untenable doctrine? Can a true Christian deny the virgin birth, or is the doc-trine an essential component of the Gospel revealed to us in Scripture? Critics often claim that since the doctrine is taught in “only” two of the four Gos-pels, it must be optional. The apostle Paul, they argue, did not mention it in his sermons in Acts, so he must not have believed it. Modern heretics like retired Epis-copal bishop John Shelby Spong argue the doctrine is just evidence of the early church’s over-claiming of Christ’s deity. It is, Spong tells us, the “entrance myth” to go with the resurrection, the “exit myth.” If only Spong were a myth. Now, even some revisionist evangelicals claim that belief in the virgin birth is unnecessary. The meaning of the miracle is enduring, they argue, but the historical truth of the doctrine is not important. Must one believe in the virgin birth to be a Christian? It is conceivable that some-one might come to Christ and trust Christ as Savior without yet learning the Bible teaches that Jesus was born of a virgin. A new believer is not yet aware of the full structure of Chris-tian truth. The real question is this: Can a Christian, once aware of the Bible’s teaching, reject the virgin birth? The answer must be no. Matthew tells us that before Mary and Joseph “came together,” Mary “was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 1:18). This, Matthew explains, fulfilled what Isaiah promised: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name ‘Immanuel,’ which translated means ‘God with Us’” (Matt. 1:23, Isaiah 9:6-7). Luke provides even greater detail, revealing Mary was visited by an angel who explained that she, though a virgin would bear the divine child: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy child shall be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). Even if the virgin birth was taught by only one biblical passage, that would be sufficient to obligate all Christians to the belief. We have no right to weigh the

M any question the justice of an eternal sentence meted out for the sins com-mitted in a single lifetime. Surely the sins of 70 years doesn’t deserve pun-ishment that goes on forever. But the theological reason is that sin is not

punished according to its breadth but its depth. It is not what sins you commit or how many you commit or for how long you commit them, but against whom you commit them. A single sin against an infinitely holy God earns an infinite punish-ment.

Source unknown

truthfulness of biblical teachings by their repetition in Scripture. We cannot claim to believe the Bible is the Word of God and then turn around and cast suspicion on its teaching. If Jesus was not born of a virgin, who was His father? There is no answer that will leave the Gospel intact. The virgin birth explains how Christ could be both God and man, how He was without sin, and that the entire work of salvation is God’s gracious act. If Jesus was not born of a virgin, He had a human father. If Jesus was not born of a virgin, the Bible teaches a lie. The secularist editors of the nation’s news magazines and newspapers may find belief in the virgin birth to be evidence of intellectual backwardness among Ameri-can Christians. But this is the faith of the church, established in God’s perfect Word, and cherished by the true church throughout the ages. Those who deny the virgin birth affirm other doctrines only by force of whim, for they have already sur-rendered the authority of Scripture. They have undermined Christ’s nature and nul-lified the incarnation. Christians must face the fact that a denial of the virgin birth is a denial of Je-sus as the Christ. The Savior who died for our sins was none other than the baby who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of a virgin. The virgin birth does not stand alone as a biblical doctrine, it is an irreducible part of the biblical revela-tion about the person and work of Jesus Christ. With it, the Gospel stands or falls. This much we know: All those who find salvation will be saved by the atoning work of Jesus the Christ, the virgin-born Savior. Anything less than this is just not Christianity, whatever it may call itself. A Christian will not deny the virgin birth.

I t is said that one day Caesar had prepared a great feast for his nobles and friends. On the day of this feast the weather was extremely horrific, so much so, no one was able to attend. Caesar was so infuriated he ordered all his sol-

diers who had bows to shoot arrows at Jupiter, their chief god, in defiance of him for the rainy weather; which, when they did, their arrows fell short of heaven, and fell upon their own heads, so that many of them were wounded. Likewise, all our grumbling and complaining, which are like those arrows shot heavenward, will return upon our own heads and hearts. They will not reach God, but they will hit us; they do not hurt God but they will wound us: therefore it is better to be mute than to grumble and complain. It is dangerous to provoke a consuming fire, He-brews 12:29.

Missionary of the Week

Daugalasi & Carlota Adam Gospelink - Mozambique

Gospelink endeavors to equip local pastors to minister to their own tribes and neighborhoods. Daugalasi and Carlota Adam, along with their five children, are working in their home country of Mozambique. From their biographical materials, Daugalasi shares:

For many years before I knew God, I served my parents' gods. I consulted witch doctors who guided my life with lies and encouraged me to participate in traditional dances which led to sinful ways. I spent almost twelve years serving these false gods. But during that time I was also listening to Chris-tian messages on the radio. Through these messages

I realized that I was serving false and powerless gods, and I needed someone to set me free. I began to feel that I was missing something, so I decided to go to church. I heard a message about Nicodemus that touched my heart. When the invitation was given, I received Christ as my Savior. After that I had joy in my heart. God gave me peace of mind. I stopped serving false gods because I realized that there is only one true God that sent His Son to die for my sins. When my wife, Carlota, and I got married, we were not saved. She also had some problems even though she grew up in a Christian family. She would drink and also go out with many other men. But she remembered what her parents had taught her about God. Carlota realized that she needed someone who could save her. One Sunday after her father preached a message, she confessed her sin and received Christ as her Savior. After that, my wife became a faithful lady who brings joy to those around her. She helps me with evangelism and ministers to the ladies. After my salvation I spent a lot of time reading the Bible. People at my church told me that I was able to explain spiritual things so that they could understand them well. I realized that it was not my wisdom, but the Holy Spirit who was helping me. I wanted to be used of God for His glory. I received training for the ministry and am now serving God as He leads. Please pray for these items:

1. Christian radio stations that are spreading the gospel in all corners of the world.

2. Continued wisdom from God and His Word as Daugalasi teaches his congregation.

3. His family to continue serving the Lord alongside him.

A s difficult as it is to trust God in adversity, there are other times

when it may be even more difficult to trust Him; such as when circum-stances are going well. During times of prosperity we are prone to put our trust in those blessings or in ourselves as the providers of those blessings. At these moments we show our trust by acknowledging God as the provider of those blessings. It is the Lord that pro-vides the regular paycheck, and the full refrigerator. We should express heartfelt acknowledgment and genuine gratitude to God in our prayers of thanksgiving to the Lord. Ecclesiastes 7:14

Come Christians Join To Sing 1. Come, Christians, join to sing— Alleluia! Amen! Loud praise to Christ our King— Alleluia! Amen! Let all, with heart and voice, Before His throne rejoice; Praise is His gracious choice: Alleluia! Amen! 2. Come, lift your hearts on high— Alleluia! Amen! Let praises fill the sky— Alleluia! Amen! He is our Guide and Friend, To us He'll condescend; His love shall never end: Alleluia! Amen! 3. Praise yet our Christ again— Alleluia! Amen! Life shall not end the strain— Alleluia! Amen! On heaven's blissful shore His goodness we'll adore, Singing forevermore, “Alleluia! Amen!”
