Articles Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness By Jon Bloom, July 4, 2014 July 4th is the day we commemorate the Continental Congress’s declaration of inde-pendence from the nation of Great Britain. People still debate over whether or not Brit-ain’s offenses warranted colonial secession and war. Regardless, it was a bold, very risky move for the signers of the Declaration. Looking back over 238 years, with America now an affluent global superpower, it’s hard for Americans to get a sense for just how unlikely (humanly speaking) it was that the 13 United States of America defeated Great Britain in a war and survived as an in-dependent nation. This might be a good summer to read 1776 by David McCullough. Self-Evident Truths What was it that drove our national founders to seek independence? What was the Big Idea behind the United States? I think it is captured in the first sentence of para-graph two of the Declaration:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

It is among the greatest sentences ever written regarding what a civil government ex-ists to preserve and protect. In the annals of history, it truly is a revolutionary statement: every human being has God-given rights to live, be free, and pursue their happiness. So powerful is this statement that it has, over time and through blood, sweat, and tears, fueled (and is still fueling) the overcoming of various kinds of racial, gender, and economic injustices in the nation itself. May God grant that it helps fuel the overcoming of 41 years of legalized violation of the unalienable right to life of unborn men and women. Where Did These Truths Come From? We know that our democratic republican form of government has its origins in Ath-ens and Rome and various other Western democratic experiments. But where did this vision for the dignity and freedom of all human beings come from? Jerusalem — by which I mean the Bible. Yes, Greek philosophy was influential too. But the men who constructed the United States and crafted all of our founding documents and took such great personal risks (like committing capital treason) in order to launch a nation built on the foundations of these truths were indelibly shaped by the Bible, whether or not they personally believed its claims.

· Creator: It was the Bible that gave our founders their general consensus of Judeo-Christian monotheism (Deuteronomy 6:4).

· All Men: It was the Bible that gave them such a strong sense of the importance of the individual — every individual (Isaiah 45:23, Philippians 2:10).

· Life: It was the Bible that taught them the sacredness of human life (Leviticus 24:17, Psalm 139:13–16).

· Liberty: It was the Bible that ingrained in them deeply the emancipatory theme of “liberty for the captives” (Luke 4:18) that runs through the whole of redemptive history.

· Pursuit of Happiness: And it was the Bible that taught them that the ultimate pur-suit of an individual’s life is to find joy (Psalm 16:11, Psalm 37:4, Psalm 73:25–26, Matthew 13:44, John 10:10, John 15:11, Philippians 1:21, Philippians 3:8).

Thank God for the United States of America The United States of America is not the kingdom of God. Christians are citizens of a “better country, that is a heavenly one” (Hebrews 11:16). The Declaration of Independ-ence and its self-evident truths is not the gospel of Jesus Christ. The socio-political free-doms we enjoy don’t set us free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2). If we sing, “I’m proud to be an American,” while invoking God’s blessing on the USA, we must remember that “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). God doesn’t like pride. And in view of some horrible national injustices and disgraces, we have cause to be humble. But we should be deeply thankful to God for the United States, “for there is no au-thority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God” (Romans 13:1). Even with its defects, sometimes tragic defects, we should never be so critical and cynical of our government that we lose sight of the historically unprecedented freedoms we enjoy, especially the freedom we have to worship according to our conscience. I recently shared lunch with a Christian leader who lives in a country that is among the most difficult and dangerous in the world to be a Christian. What our brothers and sis-ters endure there is heartbreaking. Yes, God has allowed this governing authority to exist too for purposes we don’t understand, just like he allowed Nero’s oppressive and bloody regime when Paul wrote Romans 13. We must pray for our Christian family in hard countries and ask God to grant them some of the freedoms we enjoy and advocate for these freedoms wherever we can. So today, as we remember the American Declaration of Independence, let us thank God for the miracle of a nation that holds dear the biblical values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And let us who live here thank God — while keeping America’s injustices and disgraces in view — that he has allowed us to live under a system of gov-ernment designed to preserve and protect these inalienable rights. Imperfect as it is, it is among the very best ever constructed by sinful, selfish, proud, power-hungry human beings. v If You Do Not Ask (Prayer) By Jim Elliff Though God is sovereign over all things, He ordains the means of prayer. There are some things He will not do unless we pray though He always does all He purposes. The mystery does not change this truth: You do not have because you do not ask (James 4:2). If you do not ask . . . 1. Evangelistic work will be hindered. “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Matt 9:37-38; see also Col. 4:3; 2 Thess. 3:1; Eph. 6:18-19).

2. You will enter into more temptation. “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one . . .” (Matt. 6:13). 3. You will not get what you want. “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” (John 15:7). 4. You cannot successfully prove you are His disciple. “. . . ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples” (John 15:7-8) 5. You will not have all the joy you could have. “Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full” (John 16:24). 6. You will forfeit some of God’s protection and deliverance. “And He will yet deliver us, you also joining in helping us through your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favor bestowed on us through the prayers of many” (2 Cor. 1:10-11). 7. You will often misunderstand God’s ways. “Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight” (Ex. 33:13). 8. You will continue to be worried. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7). 9. Some may not be healed. “Is any among you suffering? Let him pray . . . . Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up” (James 5:14-15). 10. You will not glorify God as much as you could. “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:13). 11. You will miss much of the beauty of the Scriptures. “Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law” (Psalm 119:18). 12. You will not accomplish as much for God. “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much” (James 5:16). It is no wonder that the church once “continued steadfastly” in prayers, and the leaders gave themselves “continually to prayer.” We can comprehend why Paul admonished us all to “continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving,” and why he wanted the men to “pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands.” And it makes sense why a widow is cared for if she “continues in supplications and prayers night and day” (see Acts 2:42; 6:4; Col. 4:2; 1 Tim. 2:8; 5:6). “Prayer,” said the 19th century preacher, Charles Spurgeon, “is the tender nerve that moveth the muscle of omnipotence.” We cannot afford not to pray. Ask and it will be given to you (Matt. 7:7). v

Missionary of the Week

Arnold Fruchtenbaum Ariel Ministries - San Antonio, Texas

Ariel Ministries was created by Arnold to evangelize and disciple Jewish brethren through Bible, theology and solid doctrine. Over the years, Ariel Ministries has spread their Messianic Centers throughout various cities in the U.S., Canada, and Israel. Missionary, Bible and Prophetic Con-ferences are held in churches and schools all over the U.S. and the world where the focus is understanding the Word from a Jewish perspective. Camp Shoshanah is a learning facility that Ariel Ministries runs as a Bible training and discipleship program taught from a Jewish perspective for Jewish and Gentile believers. Because of COVID-19, their summer session at Camp Shoshanah is cancelled this year. Visit their website at: www.ariel.org.

Praise Reports ◦ Mary Ann is adjusting well at her new facility. She recently became ill with an infection, but she is improving rapidly with the help of some antibiotics and is be-ginning to look good again. ◦ With all my speaking engagements cancelled due to the pandemic, I have been able to spend a lot of time with Mary Ann on a daily basis. I am also getting plenty of rest and enjoyed being home for such a long length of time. ◦ Praise the Lord for His provision for the ministry through the generosity of sup-porters, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. ◦ Praise the Lord that the staff have made a smooth transition back to the office to more effectively serve our supporters, customers, branches, and representatives. ◦ Praise the Lord that we were still able to get books, DVD’s, and other literature out to people all over the world during the pandemic, even t hough in some coun-tries the shipments were significantly delayed. Prayer Requests ◦ I traveled to our Shoshanah Campus to gain clarity about holding the Shoshanah Summer School Program, but it was not to be. ◦ I am planning to spend time on the school property for two weeks in July, two weeks in August, and ten days in September. The plan is to work on my Messianic commentary of Isaiah. I set a goal of completing one chapter per day, and Lord willing, I should have at least half the book done in that period of time. ◦ Pray for supporters of the ministry who themselves are struggling with financial needs during the economic slowdown resulting from the pandemic. Ask the Lord to touch hearts to raise up additional partners to share in the work through their giving and praying. ◦ Pray for continued protection from infection for each of the five people working in the Home Office, and especially for Arnold as he travels.
