PRE F ACE

The present study constitutes a slightly revised version of my dissertation in general linguistics written during the years 1969-71 at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The work is intended to be both a contribution to general linguistic theory and to the history of linguistics. The choice of Ferdinand de Saussure as the central figure of my investigation was based on the followtng traditionally held assumptions: 1) Saussure has been almost unanimously regarded as the founder of modern structural linguistics; 2) his posthumous Cours de linguistique generale has generally been regarded as a total break with previous theories of language, in particular those of the neogrammarian mould, and 3) modern linguists have tended to regard his achievements as the creative act of a genius who was completely independent of previous work in linguistics and the general intellectual climate of his day. Since these views have been expressed in the histories of linguistics up to the present time, and particularly because my own findings do not always confirm them, I have found sufficient reason to question the manner in which the history of linguistics has been written.

Histories of linguistics have been almost exclusively concerned with relating ideas about language and its investigation in a chronological fashion (suggesting at the same time that contemporary theories are much more sophisticated, adequate, and evidently superior); in other words, the evolution of linguistics is depicted as a mere process of development-by-accumulation. Histories of linguistic thought and similar accounts are frequently based on earlier studies, often relying heavily on secondary and even tertiary sources. Developments in linguistics are treated almost completely in isolation: the general intellectual atmosphere of the period in question and the socio-political and cultural background from which particular ideas and conceptions emerged have not been taken into account. Furthermore, histories available to the present day have not seriously attempted to establish a theoretical framework within which the historian of linguistic ideas should operate.*

In view of the inadequate and distorted picture of Saussure's position in the history of linguistics, the first part of my study (pp. 20-209)

* For a recent overview of the 'state of the art' of the hiStory of linguistics, see my review of H. Arens' Sprachwissenschaft (cf. Arens 1969 listed at p. 405) in Language 48:428-45 (June 1972).

attempts to illustrate, by restricting its attention to a specific period of time and a particular cultural and socio-political setting, the manner in which an account of past linguistic theories should be presented. In this part, the concept of paradigm is introduced in two distinct senses: first, in the general sense of 'intellectual atmosphere prevailing at a given time within a particular historical and cultural situation'; and second, as the "revolutionary" act of an individual in proposing a new frame of reference for the scientist which replaces the previous one (cf. pp. 3ff. and 2llf.). Since the completion of my thesis, however, I have become more concerned with eliminating the ambiguity of the paradigm concept, and would now prefer to use the term cl imate of opinion to replace the first use of 'paradigm'. Accordingly, I would like to retain paradigm to exclusively denote the creative act of setting up a new mode of pursuing scientific work within a given discipline.*

It is my conviction that linguistic thought reflects mutatis mutandis the intellectual climate of its time; indeed it may well be asked whether the history of linguistics does not represent the most important aspect of the history of ideas. Saussure's reflections on the nature of language, and his conceptions of general linguistic theory, provide a striking example of the impact the current intellectual atmosphere can exert on the mind of a person particularly aware of the 'climate of opinion'. While I would deny that Saussure was directly influenced by anyone of the sociological, economic, psychological or philosophical concepts put forward toward the end of the 19th century and into the first decade of the 20th century, his linguistic argument nevertheless reveals his dependence on the intellectual currents of the period. It is my claim that Saussure's most immediate sources of inspiration were linguistic rather than extra-linguistic writings of his own time.**

The first part of my investigation outlines how Saussure's linguistic thought evolved from the intellectual climate of his time, and also, the way in which he surpassed his predecessors and contemporaries by creating, on the basis of the accumulated (linguistic) knowledge of his time, a new frame of reference, i.e., a new 'paradigm', within which linguistics should operate. The second part of the study then devotes particular attention to the manner in which subsequent generations of linguists have succeeded or failed to work out the proposals laid down in the Cours. However, since the Cours "did not bear the

Koerner, "Towards a Historiography of Linguistics: 19th and 20th century paradigms", to appear in Anthropological Linguistics 14:6 (October 1972), and id., "European Structuralism --- the Beginnings", to be published in Current Trends In linguistics, ed. by Thomas A. Sebeok, vol. 13: Historiography of Linguistics (The Hague: Mouton, 1973), in particular the discussion in the Introduction.

It is gratifying to discover in David Crystal's recent Linguistics (Penguin, 1971) at p. 145 that "it is not possible to understand

v

imprimatur of the author" and since, as a result, "the book's influence is derived from single passages -'often detached from the rest of the work - which appeared to the reader to contain specifically stimulating insights" (Lepschy 1970 :43), I have decided to analyze the four main aspects of Saussure's theory: namely, the langue / parole distinction; the dichotomy of synchrony versus diachrony; the syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships in language; and, finally, the whole complex of ideas associated with the semiological conception of language. Each of these concepts has been approached from three distinct viewpoints: first, I consider potential sources of Saussure's linguistic inspiration, discussing the various 'precursors' that have been put forward in the literature (often in an attempt to minimize Saussure's achievement) and suggesting further possible sources; second, I attempt to re-establish, with the help of Engler's critical edition of the Cours,* Saussure's original ideas in order to defend him against a number of unjustified criticisms levelled against certain statements in the Cours; third, I delineate the main post-Saussurean developments of the concepts in question, both in Europe and America.

I should like to take the opportunity of expressing ~y gratitude to the Government of Canada, represented by the Canada Council in Ottawa, for its financial support during the years 1968-71 which enabled me to concentrate most of my efforts on research work and completion of my dissertation. Furthermore, I should like to thank my senior supervisor, Professor G. L. Bursi I I-Hal I, for his continued interest in my work, his encouragement at various stages of its execution and, above all, for his careful, critical and always very helpful supervision. Mrs. Heather Troche, who prepared the final draft of the typescript with great care, also deserves my gratitude. It goes without saying that both the particular views expressed in this study and its remaining weaknesses are all my own responsibility.

Finally, thanks are due to Professor Peter Hartmann and Dr. Arnim von Stechow of the University of Konstanz for having persuaded the Publisher to include this work in its linguistic series and to the executives of the F. Vieweg Verlag for having agreed to print it.

what Saussure did without seeing him in his own time, and especially against the intellectual linguistic background of the nineteenth century."

It is regrettable to see that many years after the appearance of the edition critique of the Cours E. Hildenbrandt presents a Versuch einer kritischen Analyse des Cours de I inguistique generale von Ferdinand de Saussure (Marburg: Elwert, 1972) which reads as if it were written fifteen years ago.
