Editor’s Notes
A warm welcome again to Fenny Drayton Parish News – as I write this, we are
enjoying some proper summer weather – let’s hope it lasts!
Last month we had the rather unhappy tale of unscrupulous traders preying on
villagers and I encouraged you to support reputable local businesses –
especially perhaps those that advertise here in the Parish News. On this note,
reproduced below we have a positive endorsement for one of our local
traders. We would be glad to publish more.
Averil and Michael Tait are stepping down from delivering the Parish News.
We thank them their help over the years, but of course we are looking for a
new volunteer to deliver 23 magazines each month to Church Lane, Drayton
Lane and Drayton Close – perhaps someone living on that round. It’s a great
way to meet your neighbours and other people in the village. Please let
Pauline know if you can help out.

‘As a post script to the editor’s notes regarding supporting the businesses that
are advertised in the Parish News - we had Handy Mario - who offers house
maintenance - to do some work for us in June and we were very pleased
indeed with the quality of his work along with his helpful manner - and it didn't
break the bank either.’

CAN YOU HELP? THIS IS URGENT!
VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED TO MOW & STRIM THE CHURCHYARD
We are currently having to pay for this to be done commercially

The Summer Holidays mark the end of the academic year for many:
School leavers are awaiting exam results before deciding what to do
next – university perhaps, college, apprenticeships, those hopeful of a
first paid job.
The younger children who have finished at Primary School are ready to
move on to Secondary - sometimes sad to be leaving, but excited and
perhaps apprehensive about the next school.
Those who teach in our schools and in further education are hopefully
able to enjoy a time of relaxation and rest before they start again at the
end of this month.
Whatever it is that lies ahead for us, and for our young people, we can
seek God and find him, in everything we do. We can put ourselves into
God’s hands knowing that he will be alongside us. He loves us and
wants the best for us, whichever path we find ourselves on.
May God bless you and be with you in whatever you do.

Friday With Friends
It was lovely to welcome some new faces to our July's FWF, as well as to catch up with familiar ones. Thanks to Helena for providing such delicious cakes: which even counted (if you ate enough, which was certainly no hardship!) as one of our five a day: an evening to nourish body as well as soul! We are taking a break in August, but will be meeting again in September on Friday 5th. Please join us; everyone is welcome - just bring your own drink and glass. The church will be open from 7 - 10pm and you can stay as long, or as briefly, as you wish. Future dates:
September 5th October 10th November 7th December 12th
Please note October's is later in the month than usual because there will be another musical 'gig' in church on the 3rd which you would be most welcome to attend; December's is later because we will be setting up for the Christmas Fayre on Saturday 6th December.
REMINDER - ADVANCE NOTICE – PLEASE MAKE A NOTE

The Fenns Folk
Our last meeting of the season saw Mr Bill Sharpe, one of the Battlefield
Guides, explaining to us the layout of the Battle of Bosworth Field, and
walked us through the events of that famous day in 1485 - the only time an
English King has been killed on English soil. We heard about the recent
archeological discoveries which have adjusted the actual site of the main
events, and there was animated discussion about further possibilities - and
the fact that Fenny Drayton received reparation from the new King Henry VII
for damages caused. All in all a most interesting evening topped off with
superb 'themed' nibbles supplied by Janet Agar, as she has done for each of
our evenings! Thanks go to Jan, not least for the imagination involved in
coming up with appropriate ideas for the theme, but also for the nibbles
themselves!
Our meetings through the year have paid for themselves, the wine and the
speakers, and have also been able to make a small donation to the Church
each month - thanks to the donations made by those who attend. We hope
to carry on next year starting in September with a talk from Solicitor Steve
Evans who has local connections - and who is going to tell us about some of
the more interesting and unusual Wills and Probates he has dealt with over
the years.
So please come along if you can - we always meet on the last Thursday of the
month, from 7.30pm in Church - where we enjoy a glass of wine with those
famous 'themed nibbles', an interesting speaker, and a good chat.
Community Coffee Mornings
Should you wish to join us, we meet in the kitchen area of the Church
from 10:30am-12:30.

A5 Roadworks
The roadworks on the A5 continue, so far without too much disruption.
However, the next phase will include the major work on the A444/A5
junction; creating an elongated island/roundabout:
There has been advanced warning given of closures of the A444 on both
sides of the A5 for twelve weeks starting in early September, with
necessary diversions. So far, no further details have been given – although
information from some time ago did suggest that these would be night-
time closures. Either way, we should brace ourselves for more traffic
coming through the village during this time – and hope that the new
junction, when complete, will reduce congestion at the Red Gate and
perhaps lead to less ‘rat-running’.
Any concerns over this can perhaps be directed via our Parish
Councillors.

Memories of Indianapolis
I recently saw an amazing painting by Michael Turner of the Indy 500 of 1966 in Autosport magazine. This had been Mr Turner’s first visit, and so was it
mine. Also, as it happened, my only visit. The memories recalled are so vivid that they cannot be forgotten.
47 years ago I emigrated to Toronto, Canada – living there for less than year in the end. I had been to Le Mans when even the fastest cars could be
driven on the road if you were wealthy enough - shortly thereafter the fastest cars were impossible to drive on the road. So I enjoyed long distance racing in particular and I really had to get to Indianapolis at the end of May.
I did not have my own car so I had to rely on public transport to get to Indianapolis. When I say public transport, I mean transport provided by the public, and I vividly recall being in a cavernous MACK cab and trailer unit. It apparently had sixteen gears and two gear levers! When ascending the mile long approach ramp to get over the St Lawrence River, in an outer lane passing most cars – must have been 55 to 60 miles per hour – the driver suddenly took both hands off the steering wheel – grabbed both levers, shoved one forward and yanked the other back. The cogs afforded little time for any resistance, before recovering the steering wheel and correction of any minor deviation within the traffic lane.
On arrival in downtown Indianapolis I had four or five days stay for the race and all the razzmatazz in the city. After depositing my luggage in a cheap hotel room, with an enormous television; I set out to find the location of the circuit. This being some two or three days before the race I was somewhat surprised to hear magnificent sounds.
11
There were no barriers to just wandering in, so I did just that. I found myself in an almost empty grandstand at the outside of the first turn. Fortunately I had my trusty tape recorder and was able to record the few cars, presumably being tested for tuning, tyres or whatever.
Sat at the very back of the grandstand the most impressive blast of sound came from the Lotus and Lola cars with twin megaphone exhausts inclined over the top of their Ford V8 engines - at this point the throttle was snapped open just on turn-in into the bend. The sheer volume from what seemed to me, then, to be the most untamed horsepower I had ever witnessed was totally awe-inspiring.
As to the race itself it was equally exciting. I was seated on the infield at turn four from where one could not help but see the enormous pile-up at the start before the very first corner.
After the re-start some one hour later, the furious pace and numerous accidents caused enormous respect for the efficiency and bravery of the fire crews and marshals. Right in front of my grandstand I recall Jim Clark spinning through 360 degrees then continuing on his way.
When the race was finished I wandered infield back towards Gasoline Alley to see if any cars were being returned. As I approached the seven foot chain link fence I observed Graham Hill being escorted into a small wooden shed only some 15’x12’ in size. Together with my portable tape recorder I was up and over that fence in the briefest of moments. I opened the shed door and there were some half dozen reporters with one chair vacant. I sat down immediately – in front of Graham Hill. To his left was Jackie Stewart; to his right was Jim Clark; to his right was Jim Clark and Hill’s team owner John Mecom.
12
Questions ensued from the reporters.
“How did the race go for you Graham?”
In his usual self-deprecating way:
“Well after seeming to avoid all the carnage at the beginning I just kept going left – stopped at the pits as directed – no incidents to speak of.”
“You must feel very proud as a rookie to win the Indianapolis 500 first time out.”
“Well I didn’t actually know I HAD won! I only found out after I had parked the car – John told me, but it was a complete surprise.”
And so the interviews continued. Suddenly the door behind opened and the voice of Graham Hill was heard to say something like “Co……r”. It was the wife of John Mecom who, upon all of us turning around, was seen to be a most striking blonde with the twin attributes most of us could not fail to be mesmerised by! Of all the stupidest things; my timidity forbade me getting my programme autographed by these luminaries – what an incredible opportunity lost. However, I had all this recorded on my sixth cassette of the trip.
For fun I used to re-play the tape recorded of the incredible sound
reverberating from the heavens of turn one grandstand. Parked at the lights
in the U.K. with a window open caused some consternation to say the least!

Extracts from Minutes of the Parish Council Meeting held on 12th June (Full Minutes are available at http://witherley.leicestershireparishcouncils.org/minutes-archive.html)
A768: BOROUGH COUNCILLOR REPORT:
The Borough Council has to save or increase its income to balance the budget by £1.4 million, and is proposing to stop the New Homes Bonus and the Council Tax Support Grant paid to Parish Councils (currently totalling £621,000). This Council received this year £715 CTS grant and £504 NH bonus. We stated we would not wish to lose this money in the future as it is used to provide the villages with improved amenities.
HBBC has been advised by legal representation to allow any planning application in order to achieve its 5 year land supply. A letter to be written to David Tredinnick against this path of action to prevent unnecessary over development.
Parish Meeting Forum 19th June at Hinckley Hub 6.30 p.m.
A769: COUNTY COUNCILLOR REPORT:
After attending a meeting of the BARWELL SUE cross parish group; Councillor Ould reported that the statistics upon which the road traffic patterns had been deemed to be flawed and the project would have to be re-visited.
George Elliot Hospital has made great headway in its patient support provision, and has implemented a scheme whereby if a member of family wishes to stay and help with the nursing of their family member during their treatment they will be able to, and in return will be supported by the hospital by discounting services they will likely need to access, this is a first for the NHS nationally.
HBBC lack of housing and land allocation was discussed.

A770: CLERK UPDATE:
Old Rectory, Fenny Drayton – Falling fence - Highways Dept have it in hand.
Grass Cutting – is a County-wide problem, there is a need for verges to be maintained in the country lanes if not in towns. All Councillors are to identify the grassed areas in their villages requiring regular maintenance; this will be reviewed in Autumn this year as part of the grass cutting contract review.
A771: UPDATES FROM VILLAGES:
It was agreed that both playing fields were over grown, the contractor does not cut the grass short enough to last between cuts. It was proposed the Clerk obtain quotes to do an interim cut and advise HBBC of action in order for the grass to be maintained as it should. Proposed Cllr Alexander, Seconded Cllr Cook.
Clerk to request grass cutting contractors (HBBC) to kill weeds at edges of both playing fields, and request their Inspector reviews the work currently carried out.
FENNY DRAYTON:
Corner of Drayton Lane and Old Forge Road has very poor visibility, Clerk to report overgrown hedges.
Positive comments received regarding the overhaul of the play equipment, contractor needs to complete work during good weather.
Community Speedwatch project will go ahead. Mrs H Sherry will coordinate it for the village. It was agreed to send a letter from the Council to endorse it.
Gym equipment in the park – a notice to be placed in the Parish magazine asking for feedback or other suggestions for equipment in Fenny Drayton playing field.
Clerk to investigate how to keep birds from fouling the play equipment.
New bench for Rookery Close – authorisation received. Purchase and install.
A742: PLANNING – 13/00908 20 Church Lane, Fenny Drayton – objections and any further comments to be passed to Clerk for compilation and forwarding to national appeal.

Broadband Upgrade
As soon as you’re able to order fibre broadband the website will be updated so please check back regularly: www.superfastleicestershire.org.uk
Latest information was that this would be available by the end of August.
A745: DOG BIN OLD FORGE ROAD, FENNY DRAYTON – decision required to resolve the problem of dog waste being put into the bin at the side of the bench. A meeting with HBBC, Cllr Wright and the Clerk took place to discuss the options. It was decided that the Parish Council would install a separate dog waste bin (previously purchased, and only £40 to have mounted on a post) nearby for the dog waste, and hopefully eliminate the need for it to be put in the general litter bin. Proposed Cllr Alexander, Seconded Cllr Cook. Cllr Wright requested her disagreement be minuted. Clerk to arrange installation. Please see notice below – ed
A747: MAINTENANCE OF DRAYTON CLOSE – It was agreed to spend S106 funds to maintain the seeded area and shrubs this Council planted. Clerk to contact Contractor who carried out work last year. Proposed Cllr Cook, Seconded Cllr Alexander.
Dog Waste Bins
Due to a number of comments about using standard bins for disposing of
Dog Waste and the smell caused. Witherley Parish Council has installed a
new Dog Bin by the telephone box (Old Forge Road / Church Lane). We
kindly ask that dog walkers use this bin so that users of the bench can have
a smell free rest. We did consider other options such as completely
removing or moving the standard bin, however we decided that trialing a
dog bin to be the best option. We will monitor the dog bin usage and
should we or residences feel it is not working, we will look at further
option. Any comments can be directed [email protected].

Village Amenities
The Parish Council has a fund called S106. This is awarded to the Council as
part of any new developments in the village. This fund is ring fenced for open
spaces that benefit the entire community and has very strict rules for
spending the money. We have been approached by a residence asking if we
could have some outside gym equipment in the park. This type of equipment
has been very successful in other communities and widely used by all ages.
We are now looking into the costs for this equipment to see if it is viable for
Fenny Drayton. We would also like any other suggestions from the
community as to what you want or comments about what you don’t want.
The Parish Council can use this information to make the best decision for all.
Could you please send all comments and suggestions to
A Battlefield Coincidence
As we reach the various 100-year anniversaries of the events of the First World War, there is added poignancy surrounding stories with family and local connections. Here is a soldier's letter from WW1, published in the Tamworth Herald December 12, 1914: A remarkable coincidence with the hatting industry of Atherstone is reported by Corporal Rogers (a nephew of Mr J.Rogers, of Atherstone), who was wounded in the battle of the Aisne. He says that in looking around for a relic of the war he picked up on the battlefield a helmet, which, upon examination, was found to have been made by Messrs. Vero and Everitt Ltd., hat manufacturers, Atherstone, as the stamp inside the helmet bore the name of that firm. There were also the initials, “A.B.” which it has since been ascertained, are those of Alfred Bindley of Atherstone, the workman who made the hat in 1907. The helmet, now in Atherstone, evidently belonged to an Indian soldier, as the crown is bound round with pugaree.
