Editor’s Notes Only just finished digesting Christmas dinner and it’s February already! Most
of us look back to childhood summers that seemed to last so long. And then,
as we grow older, time seems to pass ever faster – perhaps a reminder that
we should make good use of our time – certainly no chance to pause or
rewind!
On page 8 you can read about the rock concert that took place on January
16th. Although this was to raise funds to support the church, this was an event
that many of the wider community enjoyed too. Clearly much effort went in to
make it happen – the band themselves gave their time, and many others
made arrangements, sold tickets and shoved furniture around. Thanks all
round, again, for such good entertainment. Of course the church is a place of
Christian worship, and has special significance for that, but it is also (with the
exception of the bus shelter and phone box!) our only community building.
Without the support and usage by the community beyond those who attend
services on a Sunday, we could lose it.

Meteorites and the Moon
A meteorite is a solid piece of debris, from such sources as asteroids
or comets, which originates in outer space. It is thought that most of
the craters on the moon’s surface were caused by meteorites
crashing into the surface. More frequently, the lunar surface is
bombarded by micrometeorites – tiny grains of rock and metal - that
crash into the moon at speeds of up to 70000 miles per hour. As
there is no air or water on the moon, these collisions are the major
cause of erosion of the moon’s surface, but even so will only remove
about 1 millimetre (less than 1/16th of an inch) in a million years.

Church Matters from the Parishes of:
Fenny Drayton, Witherley, Higham-on-the-Hill,
Stoke Golding & Dadlington
RECTOR: Revd. Linda Blay (01455) 213988, [email protected]
CURATE: Hilary Surridge (01455) 233064, [email protected]
The beginning of this month, 2nd February, brings us the festival of Candlemas, or, to give it its full title, ‘The Presentation of Christ in the Temple.’ It’s exactly 40 days after Christmas Day and it officially marks the end of the Christmas season.
In New Testament times, 40 days old was an important age for a baby boy; it was when they made their first ‘public appearance’. Mary, Jesus’ mother, went to the Temple with Jesus, her first male child, to ‘present him to the Lord’. At the same time she, as a new mother, was ‘purified’.
The Temple was a busy place, full of people, noise, bustle and animals too – this was where they were sacrificed. We think of churches today as peaceful places, but this was anything but.
Through all that noisy throng, came the little family: Mary, Joseph and Jesus. There was absolutely nothing about them to single them out. There must have been many other families there just like them. And yet, two elderly people, regulars at the Temple, spotted them and responded in the most extraordinary way to their presence. Simeon and Anna recognised Jesus as no ordinary child, but as the 'Light for revelation and… the glory of Israel'. This child will be a light in the world, they said. This is where ‘Candlemas’ comes in - early Christians developed the tradition of lighting many candles in celebration of this day. The Church also fell into the custom of blessing the year's supply of candles for the church on this day - hence the name "Candlemas".
We celebrate Candlemas in our churches on the nearest Sunday, which this year is 1st February. We would love you to come and join our celebrations, as, with the glow of candlelight, we remember that Jesus is the light of the world for each and every one of us, and we remember God’s presence with us, lighting up our lives.
Wishing you all God’s blessings - Linda.

‘With Dignity and Honour’...
Once again, we will be running Lent groups in the benefice. The one in Fenny will take place on Wednesday afternoons, from 1.30pm. Sessions generally last between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the length of discussions. The first one will be held in the church; thereafter, we may move to people’s homes.
The course will include Bible study, discussion, reflection and prayer and, given the forthcoming re-interment of King Richard III, each session will look at one aspect of King Richard’s own life, which will then be opened up to link with our own lives and issues. Over the five weeks, we will look at:
1. 25th February: Dignity and Honour 2. 4th March : Purpose and Destiny 3. 11th March: War and Violence 4. 18th March: Prayer and Piety 5. 25th March: Lord and King
We would love you to join us for this Lent Group Course.
Out of the Mouths of Babes… The preacher's 5 year-old daughter noticed that her father always paused and bowed his head for a moment before starting his sermon. One day, she asked him why. ‘Well, Honey,’ he began, proud that his daughter was so observant of his messages. ‘I'm asking the Lord to help me preach a good sermon’. ‘How come He doesn't answer it?’ she asked.
Community Coffee Mornings
We meet in the kitchen area of the Church from 10:30am-12:30.
ALL ARE MOST WELCOME
The dates for February are: Thursdays 5th & 19th
From the donations we receive each week from those who attend we have been able to donate £180 to the Air Ambulance and £120 to the
Church. Thank-you for your continued support.

ROCKING AWAY THE JANUARY BLUES
We would like to thank Dave Norris and his group, ‘Still Thirsty’, again
for the amazing evening of music on 16th January. Approximately sixty
people came and everyone had a wonderful time. Dave, Jim on lead
guitar, John Rose
(a.k.a. Snowy) on
bass and Graham
on drums played
music from Status
Quo, the Beatles,
Johnny Cash, Cliff
Richard and many
more. Irena joined
them in the last of
the three sets and
there was a surprise when Elvis (Gary Shires) arrived with his drummer
Matt. They were all brilliant and we are very lucky to have such
talented people who played voluntarily to raise money to help pay for
the upkeep of the church. The total was £290 and we are very grateful
to all concerned, those who performed, those who helped and those
who supported the event.
Julia Collis, on behalf of St. Michael and All Angels PCC.
The Fenn’s Folk
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, 26th February, 7.30pm In Fenny Drayton Church. Mr Chris Edwards, on the work of the RSPB at Middleton Lakes, Tamworth.
Please come along enjoy a glass of wine, nibbles & another interesting speaker.

Fenn Lanes Men’s Group
For our January meeting, Samantha Ridgway enlightened us with an
interactive meeting entitled ‘Murder in Mind’ focusing on: What would
you do if…
Samantha shared with us some of the ‘tricks of the trade’ when writing
– as well as a number of other non-fiction pieces, she has written two
murder mystery novels; the first of which should be published later
this year. Rather than make this a dry talk, Samantha involved us in
three thought provoking activities, which gave a feel for some of the
considerations that must be made to write successfully.
NEXT MEETING February 17th. As usual, we will be meeting in the
Parish Rooms, Witherley from 7:30-9:00pm, when our speaker will be
Peter Oakdean from the Ashby Canal Trust
Friday With Friends
We continue with our gathering of old & new friends in February on Friday 6th - just bring your own drink and glass. The church will be open from 7 - 10pm and you can stay as long, or as briefly, as you wish. Future dates:
March 6th, April 10th
Please note April’s gathering will be a week later as the 3rd is Good Friday. Alistair and I really enjoy the informality of this social evening. It’s relaxing to meet up for an hour or so and just have a drink and a chat. If anyone wants to go but not on their own give us a ring and we can call for you. Louise and Alistair 712518.

Richard III in Dadlington
Sunday 22nd March
Your Invitation to be part of Royal History
On Sunday 22nd March King Richard III’s cortege will stop at St James’ Church and The Green, Dadlington for a short service en-route to Leicester.
This is to mark burials around St James’ of many of the fallen from the nearby Battle of Bosworth. Everyone from nearby villages is welcome to come to Dadlington to experience a unique royal and historic event. Parking will be signposted outside the village and people are invited to walk into Dadlington and wait on the village green.
Prior to and during the arrival, service and departure of the cortege the public will be requested to provide an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
After departure, food and drink will be available, including hotdogs, a bar in marquees, and teas in the Village Hall. Artwork produced by local children will be on display. Morris Dancers will perform on the village green.
You will be able to visit the historic Church where there will be an exhibition of historical records relating to the 1485 battlefield. A local guide will be available to answer questions about King Richard’s eventful life and the burials in the churchyard.
Detailed timings for the arrival of the cortege are yet to be announced, and will be confirmed in the next issue.

Women’s World Day of Prayer
St. Michael and All Angels’ Church
Friday 6th March 10.30am
Although this service has been designed by
women, everyone is welcome to attend.
The origins of the WWDP date back to 19th century when women in
the USA and Canada initiated a range of co-operative activities in
support of mission at home and abroad. Over time, they formalised a
WWDP service, with the first ones in the UK taking place in the 1930s.
Each year a different country creates the service which, over36 hours,
will have been held in thousands of venues across 170 countries; all
around the world, people will have been praying for, and praising, a
common purpose: come and join us in this wave of prayer!
The service includes many readings so, if you would like to play a more
active role, please join us for our rehearsal in church on Friday 27th
February at 10.30.
RICHARD THE THIRD CELEBRATIONS WHITE FLOWERS WANTED PLEASE - The ladies of Dadlington are hoping to decorate the Church, churchyard and village green in a mixture of white fresh and artificial flowers for the weekend of 22.3.2015. Can you help by looking in your attics, garden sheds and local charity shops for any artificial white flowers they could have please. They will be needed for the first week of March and I am able to collect them and deliver them to Dadlington. They do not have any funding for this venture so all flowers will be welcome. Please help –it’s a great opportunity for our villages to be part of this historic occasion. Thank you Louise Murray 712518.

Santa gets here in the end but is beaten by a touch of wind!
Last year Frosty the Christmas Snowman retired whilst at the top of his game.
Since then Willy O’Riley [manager and artistic director] has been in search of
a star to adorn the hallowed ground where Frosty used to stand. He
stumbled across two stars in fact: Frosty2 and Biker Santa. Booked for
Christmas 2014 he thought he had it sewn up. However, not everything went
to plan.
Residing in the North Pole, it should have been a simple journey to get here,
but they didn’t account for a detour. Planning to arrive during the first week
of December they thought they didn’t have to rush: they lazily packed their
kit and had the sleigh serviced for the journey.
Setting off, it was just a short hop from the top of the world to Fenny
Drayton: dropping down past Greenland, turning left towards Iceland and
over Scotland. But it was not to be. Who would have thought the highways
through the sky over the northern hemisphere were undergoing engineering
work? Yep, someone had decided that improvements were necessary and to
prevent mid-air congestion and collisions they also closed perfectly
serviceable routes!
Frosty2 and Biker Santa had to make a massive detour to get to get to Fenny.
The interstellar highway was the only route. For those of you that don’t know
it, the interstellar highway runs throughout the solar system, linking all the
major planets and moons. The two celebrities had to fly out to Uranus,
refuelling on one of its moons, Bhuttplhughh, and then return in via the
southern hemisphere over the English Channel, Stratford and Higham.
With all the delays they eventually arrived only a few days prior to Christmas.
Willy O’Riley had to work frantically get their blowers on. Sadly, the wind got
up and ravaged the two new arrivals, tearing them from their stays. It was
too much to bear; they had to temporarily switch off their blowers to prevent
injury.
Christmas Day came along and they merrily wobbled about into Boxing Day.
Sadly, the bad weather returned and became too severe. Once again they
12
had to switch off their blowers and retreat to their boxes. They didn’t see the
light of day again during the Christmas period. It was all cut so short.
A spokesperson for the contractors casually apologised for any inconvenience
caused as a result of the engineering works, adding that progress causes
some pain, even at Christmas.
Willy O’Riley went on to say “Christmas was nearly ruined by poor planning
and closures to routes that were not necessary; we were lucky to get the two
new stars out for the short time we had available. The contractors working
on the air highways didn’t give a thought to the inconvenience caused to
ordinary folk trying to get into the UK. We wouldn’t get that sort of
incompetent blasé decision making round here!”
Watch out next year for Frosty2 and Biker Santa. And thanks for all the
enquiries about their short appearance this year.

A5 Roadworks
The roadworks around the MIRA site will soon be completed. You should have received a hand-delivered letter in mid-January detailing some final works on the Redgate junction – for February there will be some night-time working to apply the final high-friction surfacing, which will require four-way traffic lights.
To receive email newsletters with the latest updates from those managing the work – please contact [email protected] or [email protected]

Community litter pickers needed
VOLUNTEERS with community spirit are needed to help improve the areas where they live.
The Borough Council’s Clean Neighbourhoods team works very hard, but they simply don’t have the people or the resources to deep-clean every single area of the borough every day.
So, in order to raise the standard of cleanliness in the borough even further, the team would love to give volunteers the opportunity to make a difference by organising their own community litter pick.
Litter picking as a group can be fun and rewarding, as well as being a great way of getting some light exercise.
The Clean Neighbourhoods team will supply volunteers with all the equipment they need to do a litter pick, such as a litter picker, bag ring, gloves, hi-vis vests and refuse bags. They will also arrange for the rubbish to be collected.
A litter pick could be a one-off event or it could be undertaken on a regular basis.
For more information about getting involved, call 01455 255971 or email: [email protected] .

There is currently a second trial underway which has been recording traffic movements during the Christmas period. The Council will revisit previous quotes for purchasing a similar machine and ratify at the next meeting the purchase. The budget was allocated for this project in the precept for 2014/15 discussions January 2014. RUNNING IN FENNY DRAYTON
Mum of two young children trying to fit running around family life but finding it difficult with the dark nights when I don't like running on my own! If you are female and interested in running around Fenny Drayton, please call Katherine: 07880 797494.
CHRISTMAS FAYRE
Two flower arrangements were left in church on the day prior to the Christmas Fayre but no one has been able to find out who left them.
Thank you to whomever it was. They were beautiful and were greatly appreciated.
