ROOM 113 – CLASS NEWS

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?

This week we wrapped up Unit 1 inmath. This unit focused on word problems

involving multiplication and division. Students

learned several strategies for solving problems

relating to different mathematical situations.

We will take the Unit Test on Monday, which

will be shared at conferences next week. We will

start Unit 2 after conferences. It is a short unit

that focuses on the area and perimeter of

triangles and quadrilaterals.

We continued working with our IBPlanner, titled The Human Machine. This week

we focused our inquiry on the skeletal and

muscular system. We counted the number of

bones in our bodies and even got to dissect an

owl pellet to look for rodent bones. We also

learned about muscles and their role in our

bodies. We had a guest speaker this week, my

husband who is a foot and ankle surgeon. The

kids had a lot of really good questions for him.

Next week, we will focus our inquiry on thenervous system and start working on the

summative assessment for this unit of inquiry.

In spelling we focused on words with the

long o sound. We will be working on one

spelling list over the next two short weeks at

school.

Students also completed the mile run in

gym this week. They did a fantastic job! I was a

risk-taker myself and ran with them. It was great

seeing them work hard to accomplish their goal.Have a great week!

PATROL UPDATE!!The ORANGE team will be on duty from

October 11 – October 29. The schedule

will be posted at school and on our fifth

grade team website:

www.fifthgradeteam.weebly.com.

FIRST GRADE BUDDIESWe started working with our first grade

buddies this week. Each fifth grader is

paired up with a first grader from Ms.

Pam’s class. We will be meeting once a

week throughout the school year to help

the first graders with their reading and

writing. We will also share work that we

have done in class. This is a great way to

build cross-age connections!!
