THE FELTHORPE WOODS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Felthorpe Woods lie in attractive gently rolling countryside about 7 miles to the north west of the centre of Norwich. The woods enjoy excellent external access from public roads and generally there is very good internal access and stacking areas in the larger blocks. The woods are offered for sale for the first time in over 60 years. The current crops were mainly established between 1950 and 1968 on light heathland soils. The softwood elements are principally pine with some very good Douglas fir along with western red cedar and larch. Hardwood belts are often featured around the edges. The woods are all well presented demonstrating the owner’s commitment to management in the woods. The current manager, Diana MacMullen of The Verderers Ltd has been involved here for approaching 25 years. The younger crops in the woods have been restocked with natural regeneration of pine and birch following areas of clearfelling in 2005 and 2013. The 2005 areas demonstrate the profuse natural regeneration capable on these sites. In the most recently felled areas, variety has been added by the planting of widely spaced Douglas fir which will complement the anticipated natural regeneration.

---------------------------------------------------------------

LOT 1: NURSERY PLANTATION 7.53 hectares / 18.60 acres Nursery Plantation enjoys public road frontage along three of its boundaries with the principal access from the eastern boundary. The wood contains the best area of Douglas fir in the Felthorpe sale. This extends to just over 4½ acres of 56 years old crops ready for thinning. The balance of the wood comprises mainly Scots pine, European larch and western red cedar of the same age. There is a small area of mixed broadleaves dating from 1990. At the south west corner are four veteran Wellingtonias which have a Tree Preservation Order.

LOT 2: GILHAM’S HEATH PLANTATION 23.67 hectares / 58.49 acres A substantial woodland with excellent access off its southern and western boundaries. The accesses link with a comprehensive system of internal rides. Gilham’s Heath Plantation principally dates from between 1961 and 1966 when a mainly pine – Corsican and Scots – crop was established. Belts of oak, with some sweet chestnut, were planted through the crops and particularly along the southern boundary where, along with similar crops in lots 3 and 4, they create a very attractive avenue along the Felthorpe Road. The north west corner of the wood was cleared and restocked in the mid-2000s. Profuse natural regeneration of birch and Scots pine alongside planted oak and sweet chestnut has produced full stocking. These crops have already been cleaned and the birch respaced at c.3 metres intervals. Some of the birch has been sold for racecourse jumps. Recently further restructuring of the age class has occurred with clearfelling of further areas. Along the central southern section, where planting was originally in bands of 8 rows each of Corsican pine and Scots pine, strips of Corsican pine have been removed leaving the Scots pine as shelter and a seed source. Following on from the successful experience in the north west corner a decade previously, restocking is intended to be by natural regeneration supplemented by widely spaced Douglas fir. The woodland includes a useful storage area with a container. The container will be removed prior to completion although it may be available by separate negotiation. Along the northern boundary but outside Gilham’s Heath Plantation, is Sandy Lane which is classified as a RUPP (Road Used as a Public Path).

THE FELTHORPE WOODS

LOT 3: BIG PLANTATION 16.81 hectares / 41.54 acres Big Plantation dates mainly from 1961 and 1965 when it was established with a principally Corsican and Scots pine mix along with a small area of European larch. A small area of the Scots pine with some western hemlock and oak dates from the early 1970s following restocking after a fire. As with lot 2 oak with some sweet chestnut run in belts through the wood and alongside the public road on three of its boundaries. This is another wood with good external and internal access. About 1.77 hectares has been recently felled. Partially restocked in 2015 at wide spacing with Douglas fir, which should be supplemented with birch and pine natural regeneration.

THE LINGS 19.27 hectares / 47.62 acres With long frontage onto the Felthorpe Road on its northern boundary providing good access to this wood, whilst also dating from the early 1960s, is more varied in its crop composition. The conifers include Scots and Corsican pine along with Douglas fir, European larch and western hemlock. Large areas were planted under the strip system in bands of conifers. Felling has commenced in these bands with Corsican pine usually being the first species removed. Restocking will be with Douglas fir supplemented with birch and pine regeneration.

Steward’s Plantation and The Lings contains a stronger percentage of broadleaves, mainly oak and sweet chestnut, than amongst the 1960s plantings in the other lots. This woodland contains a small open shed along with a stacking area at its western end. This is let on an annual licence. The tenant, Mr Abel, buys in the timber from outside sources for the log business he runs from the site. Mr Abel has assisted the current owners in the silvicultural management and maintenance of the woods and also keeps a careful eye on all the woods.
