Trans World Radio
Writing for Media
You don’t need a special “charisma” to write for media. The skills can be acquired in
a short period of time.
Trans World Radio
Writing for Media
Look at these four questions:
-What is the goal? (the Purpose)
- Who will be my audience? (the Listener)
- What will I say? (the Message)
- How will I say it? (the Format)

A SCRIPT
It is very important to have a script before you are at the microphone.
Without a SCRIPT, very few people can say all they want to say and still keep the attention of an audience.
Trans World Radio
Writing For Media
VISUALISE
the listener in his/her place of calling
Principles for SCRIPTWRITING:

Writing For Media
As you begin to write, VISUALISE:
A professional worker: – Lonely; overworked; challenged by the new
culture….
A lonely mother
A frustrated TCK…
What is she/he doing at the time of
the broadcast?
How does she/he feel? What help do they need?
Trans World Radio
Writing For Media
Principles for the SCRIPTWRITING:
1. VISUALISE the listener’s condition
2. DECIDE what you are going to say

2. Decide what you are going to say:
The purpose of a serious talk will focus on one or a combination of following:
increase understanding
influence attitude
change behavior

Lettering For Media
We speak in a different way from the way we write
Use words and phrases of everyday speech
Speak the phrase aloud, then write it down
Once you do that, you are writing for ears
The listener is not going to read script, but will hear it
Most people are familiar with writing letters, memos, etc. (Require formal language)

3. Write for ears and not for eyes
“eyes” “ears”
sentences are long -are short & direct
language is formal -is conversational
“Radio” is a spoken medium.

Keep it Simple
The difference between writing for print and writing for radio is:
Your Approach
Trans World Radio
Writing For Media
• Use direct language
(rather than formal style)
• Use simple sentences
• Use simple words
Trans World Radio
Writing For Media
* use personal pronouns * use phrases like “you see…” * Do NOT use phrases like, “all of you out there in radio land…”
Write for the individual
Trans World Radio
Writing For Media
Write without overloading!
You can …
pause
change the pace
change the tone of your voice
emphasize words or phrases…
So you don’t need as many words.
Radio lends itself to stories and experiences.
Trans World Radio
Writing For Media
The listener is looking for clues that tell him what direction you will be going.
* A SIGNPOST is a steering wheel in the listeners mind.
* A SIGNPOST helps the listener anticipate what is coming next.

“Hello workers of membercare media, I just want to thank you for the messages every
day. I'm listening 3 to 5 times a week (by internet). Many times it's encouraging. Often I see messages coming more than 1 time. Today I heard again the message about our worth and I really want to say: thank you. Know that there are people looking forward for your messages!
I'm now 6,5 years abroad and God used it often to help me through things. thank you and be
blessed in your work.” Judith

Utilizing media resources to
encourage and enhance cross cultural Christian workers, to
better enable them to fulfil the Great Commission.
37
We see proactive member care being the norm, rather than the exception.
We see communicating and loving missionary families, with a healthy balance of work,
life and faith. We see healthy Third Cultures Kids, valued
as individuals in mission organizations and families.
38
We see Cross-cultural workers persevere in the midst of difficult circumstances,
remaining on the field in spite of strong opposition.
We see effective teams of Christian workers walking in unity.
We see growing churches, serving God because Christian workers are spiritually,
mentally and emotionally healthy.
