Feliciana Credit Union Reopens Paper Mill Branch
There is a new triathlon club, False River Tri-Club, in the area founded with a mission of leading children and families to healthy, ac-tive lifestyles.
Tri us. is a New Roads triathlon club with both a youth and adult component. The Youth Triathlon Training Program is currently in their third week of camp with 15 kids enrolled. Aimee Moreau, along with a group of dedicated parents, started the group this year with a goal of preparing students to participate in the RocketKidz Triathlon at LSU later in the summer.
“I thought, let’s put together a camp that teaches the fundamentals of the swim, bike, run, while add-ing components to build self-esteem, friendships, and education about healthy, active lifestyles,” she ex-plained.
In addition to physical training, the program includes a curriculum

with lessons on the essentials of proper nutrition, stretching, strength-training, and flexibility as well as emphasizing the importance of team-work and confidence. The group is coached by Moreau, Mark. Morrison, Mary Beth Guerin and Tim Garrett.
“When trying to make respon-sible choices about the foods we eat and the types and amount of physi-cal activity we engage, it can some-times be confusing. You simply can’t rely on product advertisements, and nutrition labels can be confusing to both adults and children. One of our primary goals is to work with fami-lies to help them make responsible, healthy choices,” explained Coach Morrison.

In March of 2009 amidst an un-certain economic future, Feliciana Federal Credit Union closed its St. Francisville Branch near the then shuttered Tembec Paper Mill. The loss of the Mill and the hundreds of well paying jobs caused the commu-nity financial institution to rethink its place market. However, with the reinvigorated KPAQ Industries run-ning the paper mill now, Feliciana Federal Credit Union announced this week that they have re-opened their St. Francisville location at Located at 2552 Highway 964 in St Francis-ville.
Chartered in 1960, Feliciana Fed-eral Credit Union originally was named Cee Zee Employees Federal Credit Union.
The credit union serves Employ-ees of the Paper Mill, but also any-one in the Feliciana, New Roads,
and Zachary Communities who wishes to join.
The credit union serves almost 3,000 members and is one of the top 50 credit unions in asset size in the state of Louisiana.
“We are very excited to return to our roots here near the paper mill. We have worked with many of these families for decades. It was tough when Tembec shuttered the plant in 2007, but we maintained, and now we are stronger than ever, back excited to be in this location with KPAQ Industries producing paper again,” Credit Union President Gigi Robertson said.
The Credit Union now has three full service locations, one each in Zachary located at 20303 Old Sce-nic Highway, New Roads – located at 2312 False River Road, Suit A, and St. Francisville.

CommunityLouisiana Artist Trish Ransom Conducts Workshop at Clinton Library
In conjunction with the Audubon Library System, the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge, and the Division of the Arts Popular Louisiana Debris Art-ist Trish Ransom conducted a Dragonfly Debris art workshop last week in Clinton.
A little bit about Trish Ransom:
Of the things that make Trish happiest, art and dancing/music are at the top of the list. In 1996 she discovered Louisiana’s Cajun and Zydeco music very much alive and thriving in the San Francisco Bay Area where she lived.
She soon found herself on the way to Lafayatte to experience firsthand the culture that she had come to love. Well, not only did Festival Acadiens have terrific music but also a wonderful selection of Cajun and Creole food as well as a most wonder-ful Native and Contemporary Crafts Show. She decided then and there that she had found the closest thing to heaven on earth.
It did not take long for her to become infatuated with south-west Louisiana(she even likes the hot weather!!!)........and sick of the fog, urban congestion, and isolation of her big city corporate life (not to mention her wardrobe of suits and pantyhose and heels........YUCK.) She enjoyed the sophisticat-ed world of handmade rugs ( which she bought from Macys), but just was not happy.................. ..sooo........ she found an old house surrounded by oaks and banana trees out in Grand Coteau Louisiana (population 1100) and up and moved.........really, with no plan for the future (other than to get a “real job” eventually.......and to never wear pantyhose again).
A friend with a folk art gallery, knowing that Trish had studied art in the far and distant past (at Stanford University, of all places!), asked if she could make some jewelry for the shop............and that was the beginning of the beginning. First came the bottlecap ear-rings and necklaces, then the fish and armadillos........then someone said she should enter that Native and Contemporary Crafts Show herself........ and while there someone said she should enter JazzFest...and then someone asked to carry her work in his gallery..............
Now, having been here since 1999,, she still wakes up every day feeling blessed and lucky to be surrounded by wonderful and creative friends, to be able to walk her dog everyday through beautiful oak trees and lush foliage (she grew up in the barren desert of Taft, California), to zydeco every weekend and, most of all, to be able to make art whenever she wants.
She still does not have “real job” and has not had to wear pantyhose.

Trail Riders, 4-wheelers, trail-ers, and Mules (on wheels) came to-gether on June 8 in Wilson to help raise money to give a “face lift” to the Calvin Jackson town park.
Debra Thomas, Event Coordina-tor, said that two Trail Rider orga-nizations were going to give dona-tions. Those groups were the Last of the Dying Breed from East Feli-ciana and Evolution Riders of Baton Rouge. Donna Britt of WAFB chan-nel 9 served as Parade Marshall for the ride.
Over $340 was raised to begin revamping the park to provide more benefits to the community.

Newman’s Cleaners held their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on June 18 for their full service cleaners. Owner Ray Newman opened Newman’s Cleaners 6 months ago.
Ray Newman recently retired from law enforcement after 32 years of service. When he decided he was ready to re-tire, it took him a while to find the perfect location for his new career opportunity. Located in Zachary Commerce Square at 5145 Main Street, Newman’s Cleaners has a 24-hour turnaround service on most dry cleaning items. Some items have a same-day turnaround if brought in before 9 a.m. Newman is a very proud family man. His son Calvin, age 32, is a 14-year military veteran. He and his wife, Kristina, have a 6-month-old son, Rome. Newman’s youngest son, William, age 23, is a 3-year military vet. Newman’s Cleaners offers all law enforce-ment and medical emergency personnel a 10% discount on uniform cleaning, with an additional 5% discount off their family’s clothing.

as a program partner which provides support for area programs like Girls on the Run, Wheels to Succeed, BREC Summer Camps Scholar-ships, BREC First Tee, Fitbird Youth Paratriathlete Program, Crawfish Aquatics Inner City Swim Program among others. This foundation spon-sors numerous races in the area with an organizational mission of creating and sustaining active, fit and healthy children, families and communities through programming, advocacy and education.
Adults interested in training for an event can also find support through the Tri us. False River Tri-Club which is currently accepting mem-bers of all fitness levels. The group is a relatively new one, but is rapidly
growing in membership throughout the area.
Members meet on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Satterfield’s in New Roads to train in either swimming, biking, or running. The group is designed to pro-vide support for athletes at all levels. “We give people an opportunity to share what they have learned. We’re trying to get people to connect with others with the same interests and abilities,” Moreau explained.
Although enrollment for this sea-son’s youth program is complete, there will be program opportunities throughout the year and adults looking for training opportunities are encour-aged to come out to the weekly meet-ings year-round. More information about the youth and adult programs, as well as the False River Tri-Club schedule, can be found at www.trius-newroads.com.
