cheon, one of only six selected this year for having scores very close to those of the winners.

Gary Shotwell has worked at Dixon Correctional Institute (DCI) since 1977. He began his tenure there as a correctional officer and has been promoted to the rank of assistant warden. In this capacity, he supervises several departments including the business office, food service, warehouse, maintenance and construction, communications, educational and vocational pro-grams and informational technol-ogy. Gary has directed large scale improvements of DCI buildings and grounds, and he also played an im-portant role in the formation of Pen Pal, Inc, a dog and cat shelter on prison grounds whose genesis came about spontaneously when DCI ac-cepted hurricane Katrina res-cues.

Gary described the honor as, “very humbling.” In his acceptance speech, Gary ac-knowledged the four wardens for whom he has worked over the years. “The common denomina-tor that each of them held was that they were all very good leaders. They lead by example…My career has been molded by these man and others like them,” he said. Gary also recognized his staff, who he said made him look good, and his wife and three sons.

Gustave (Gus) began his career in civil service at Villa Feliciana Medical Complex in June of 1970.

He transferred to the La. Veterans Home in 1983 as a supervisor in the home’s first physical therapy department and has since been pro-moted to assistant administrator.

In that role, he is responsible for directing and managing the follow-ing departments at the home: fiscal, human resources, social services, di-etary, therapeutic recreation, main-tenance and housekeeping. He also oversees the facility’s quality assur-ance program and serves as princi-pal assistant to the administrator of the home, assuming full responsi-bility for all activities of the facility during the administrator’s absence.

Gus has been recognized by the Office of Risk Management for ini-tiating a facility-wide quality as-surance program, the first award

presented to a state agency. He is also very active in his community, mentoring local East Feliciana Par-ish high school students through the Job Training Partnership Act Sum-mer Program and serving as a board member, coach, umpire and statisti-cian for baseball and football teams in Kentwood, La. He is also a mem-ber of the Sons of American Legion. His distinguished and outstanding

service to the veterans, their fami-lies, and the employees of the Loui-siana Veterans’ Home in addition to his community service is what made Gus stand out to the judges.

Of his award, Gus said, “It has been an honor to be a part of a team that continues to provide second-to-none health care to all veterans re-siding at the La. Veterans Home. To receive this award is the highlight of my career as a state employee.”

Ursula Shaw, LSU Ag Center ex-tension agent and point person for the parish’s 4H program, has been involved with 4H since she was in fourth grade herself, though she nev-er could have dreamed that she’d be working with 4H as an adult. She be-gan her journey six years ago thanks to the confidence former 4H agent Beverly Bailey had in her abilities.

A native of East Feliciana, Ursula knows the parish, knows the makeup of the schools, and understands the needs of the kids with whom she works. Though they cover a broad range of topics in 4H, Ursula has re-cently been focusing on the parallel issues of obesity and nutrition, es-tablishing a student garden in front of the old Clinton High School. The garden was such a success that this spring, she and her 4Hers will install pallet gardens in all the schools in the parish.

Ursula described what working for 4H means to her: “4H was my life [as a child] and it was something that brought me a long way. So I was honored to come back to my own parish to do what I’m doing.”

Dear Editor: I would like to extend my deepest

gratitude to the Explorer and all the readers who voted for me as the 2012 Hometown Heroes. It is such a great honor. It has been such a joy over the last 25 years to serve Zachary as a Community Helper.

I would especially like to thank Laura Steen, Bridget Richards, and Mary Whittle for nominating me; it is a great honor to know that I am held in such high esteem in your eyes. Also, a special thanks to Howard and Loretta McDaniel for their tireless assistance over the last several years.

I look forward to helping more families in the future. the Explorer’s donation to the Community Helpers fund will definitely come in handy this year.

Congratulations to all the other nominees who are all just as deserv-ing. Thank you all, again, for the honor and for the increased com-munity awareness of Zachary Com-munity Helpers that this award has afforded.

For the tenth year, the American Heart Association (AHA) is raising awareness about the risks of heart disease in women by encouraging Americans to wear red on Febru-ary 1, National Wear Red Day. In St. Francisville, Mayor D’Aquilla has proclaimed February 1 as Paint the Town Red Day, and local busi-nesses and community members are invited to participate in the activi-ties planned for that day. In Clinton, Mayor Lori Ann Bell has invited the community to wear red.

Heart disease is the number one

killer of women in Loui-siana and in the USA, taking one in three wom-en each year. It kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. Yet the disease does not affect all women alike, and the warning signs for women aren’t the same as in men.

Through this cam-paign, the AHA continues to give women the tools with which to take control of their heart health. In 2004 when the initiative was started, cardiovas-cular disease claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 women. Ten years lat-er, these numbers have dropped significantly. According to the Go Red for Women website, 21% fewer women are dying from heart disease and

23% more women are aware that it’s their number one health threat. Lives have literally been saved, thanks to the collective energy, passion, time, money and HEART of the 25 million Americans who have supported this movement.

Wear Red Day is always held on the first Friday of February; this year, that day falls on February 1. Paint the Town Red sponsors in St. Francisville include West Feliciana Parish Hospital and the St. Francis-ville Chamber of Commerce. They are encouraging all local businesses

to drape their store-fronts in red, and residents are encouraged to drape themselves in red that day as well. Just as important as raising aware-ness is raising funds, and community members are also asked to consider making a donation to the cause.

Mayor Bell hopes residents will consider participating in National Wear Red Day, as it will “remind our citizens of the vital importance of preventive health care and to support educational programs to help fight against heart disease and stroke.”

“Now is the time to act. Heart dis-ease is still the number one killer of women, and ninety percent of wom-en have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease,” said Don-na Arnett, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., president of the American Heart Association. “With the right information, educa-tion and care, heart disease in wom-en can be treated, prevented and even ended.”

students from Jackson Elementary School read original poems that they wrote inspired by the life and example of Dr. King. They were given a stand-ing ovation by the attendees. Sidney Picou, attorney in St. Francisville, and Betsy Jones, assistant district attor-ney for West and East Feliciana, were among those in attendance. According to Thomas, there were 65 participants in the 3rd annual walk.

Thomas is the founder and director of the Wilson Community Youth Or-ganization, which began in 2004. The organization works mostly with the educational and recreational aspects of all youth in Wilson. In addition to after school tutoring, the organization also offers programs during the sum-mer months to help prepare students for their upcoming school year by fo-cusing on math and reading skills to which they will be introduced in the fall. The teachers communicate with the tutors to help ensure the students are prepared for a better year.

etc., is “bursting at the seams.” “We are constantly growing be-cause we are the agency cast with the responsibility of holding all the records for the parish...So we’re always getting bigger; we can’t throw stuff away,” said Dart.

Six months ago, recognizing that the office was less than two years away from running out of room, Dart approached the parish police jury, which is responsible for housing the parish’s govern-mental agencies. However, accord-

ing to Dart, the tight financial cir-cumstances of the parish as well as the fact that the Clerk of Court is a fee-based agency, receiving no dedicated tax revenues, required that he take steps to secure funding through other avenues. With the instrumental help of Ann Reiley Jones, who took an interest in the project for its association with the court system, the grant from the Pennington Foundation was se-cured.

Without an architect yet at the helm, plans are very preliminary; but Dart said the addition, which is to run the length of the back of the existing office, will provide an

additional 1500 s.f. of space that will, “provide for the most precious re-cords of our parish to be in a climate controlled area.”

At the current rate of growth of the parish, and con-sidering new tech-nologies that may serve as space sav-ing measures, Dart estimates that the addition should provide 25 years of

storage for the parish. From start to finish, including

the planning stages, Dart hopes that the addition will be completed within one year, cutting close to

the now-14 months worth of stor-age left in the building.

Dart expects that the $200,000 will cover the entire project.

(Top): Every nook and cranny of the Clerk of Court’s Office houses shelves of parish legal records packaged into books dating back to the early 1800s.

(Left): Rolling shelving systems are used throughout the office to store parish records. The new addition will contain storage units like these.

St. Francisville’s Paint the Town Red Day | February 1

Mayor D’Aquilla has proclaimed February 1 as Paint the Town Red Day in support of the American Heart Association’s efforts to raise awareness on the risks of heart disease in women. Local businesses are encouraged to participate by draping their store-fronts in red, and residents are encouraged to drape themselves in red that day as well.
