    Feldmans Method of Art Analysis

" Within the oil painting, Viveka, made in 1999 by DouglasSchnieder, one can see a blindfolded woman off to the right side of thecanvas, facing in the direction of what appears to be part of a house.Multiple views of the house are represented, however no part of thehouse is fully painted. The womans arm also appears to be purposelyleft unpainted. There is a red outline of the woman overlapping part ofthe house on the right side of the canvas. Along the bottom, the lettersP, A, S, S appear to have been stenciled in red and are evenlyspaced, spreading from the left side all the way to the right side of thepainting."

In this painting, the three Elements of Art that are the mostapparent are color, line, and value. It appears that mostly primarycolors have been used to complete the painting. Variations of red, blue, and yellow make up the views of the houses, as well as thewomans dress and faint outlines on both the woman and the house.Brighter, warmer colors, such as yellows and whites, are in theforeground on the house and woman, while darker versions of red andblue exist in the background." The second most important Element of Art is line. While linesmay not be as plentiful in the painting as shapes and colors, they standout among the larger, filled in areas. Red outlines make up a simplified

and smaller rendering of the woman on the left side of the piece, andcan be seen again in an outlined blindfold covering the woman s eyes.Parts of her arms have not been filled in with color, and have been leftas transparent shapes, marked only by dark contour lines. Lower onthe painting, we see an outline of part of the house." The third most prominent Element of Art isvalue. ....................... (You get the point!)" Schneiders painting also exhibits three very importantPrinciples of Design; contrast, balance, and repetition. Contrast canbe seen between dark and light values throughout the entire piece. The womans white and light yellow dress stands out from the cool,

dark blues in the background. Also the house on the left side of thepainting has been painted with mostly yellow and a gray-violet color.Since violet and yellow are complementary colors, this example alsoshows contrast of color. ..............................." Asymmetrical balance has been displayedby......................................................... (Continue explaining theremaining examples of Principles of Design, and which elements theyhelp to illustrate).

" The painting, Viveka, is both a perceptual and an expressivepiece of art. (Thoroughly explain WHY you selected either Perceptual,Expressive, or Non-Objective)................................................................" I believe Schneiders intent of the painting is ...... (thoroughexplanation of what you believe the painting is about, based on what it

looks like, the elements and principles that were used, the time period,etc.)........................................................................................................." The overall mood or feeling within the paintingis ................................. (justify your response with examples of howthe elements and/or principles help to create the mood or feeling youbelieve the painting exhibits)." When comparing Schneiders Viveka to the oil painting TheRed Room, painted in 1908 by Henri Matisse, there are somesimilarities of Elements and Principles that can be discerned. Onecommon Element the two pieces share is the Element of color. Bothpieces make use of primary colors, with the paintings mainly consisting

of reds, yellow, and blues. Also common between the two paintings isthe Principle of contrast. Warm reds and yellows are contrasted withcooler blues. Large areas of red are complemented by areas of greenin The Red Room, while Viveka makes use of the complementarycolors of yellow and violet." When contrasting the two paintings, one can notice a lack ofvalue in The Red Room, as compared to the many lights and darkspresent in Viveka in order to create a sense of form. The RedRoom appears much more flat and shape-like because of the lack ofvalue. Another difference between the two paintings is...... (BESPECIFIC)."

While both paintings are expressive, because of their lack ofrealistic, perceptual qualities, they are also slightly different in theirdegree of expressiveness. Schneiders piece has many more realisticqualities, with its use of value and form, than Matisses flattened spaceand figures. ...... (Elaborate!)....." Finally, the piece I prefer is .................... I like this piece betterbecause (be sure to mention elements and principles!!)......(ELABORATE!)......
