Site Contex and AnalysisExecutive SummaryPurpose
The site at Engineering Technologies Annex at NAIT has been designated as the sustainable building lab for NAIT. Our intention is to develop a building that will incorporate sustainable methods and material and will serve as a large-scale demonstration of what sustainable construction should be.
Site Description
The current site is a two storey campus building that is designed for various construction and engineering technology programs. The northeast part of the site, which is currently under construction phase, will be used as student parking lots.
Proposed Use
The site will be used for the construction of Centre of Excellence in Sustainability and Building Technologies, which will showcase sustainable strategy and green building features.
Site Access
The The site will be accessible to pedestrians from southwest, southeast and side via sidewalks. The northwest side is accessible from parkade facing 118ave. There are student parking lots under construction near northeast. It’s expected that the site will be accessible to vehicles coming all directions from the east. Currently emergency vehicles can gain access via parking lots on Princess Elizabeth Ave.

Concept/Inspiration
Insight is the capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a person or thing.
As for the building design, gaining insight means searching for the fundamental purpose of a building, and then organize all elementsreasonablysothatitreflecttheessentialrelationshipbetween them. Functionalism is the philosophy behind the word. In continuous research for the needs of the programs and the building, we will understand better what is most importanttothisprojectandthenmanifestitthroughthedesign. For NAIT, gaining insight is to have a clear vision of the development of the program, and a deep understanding what the real world really expect and what the students aspire toachievefromhere.Afterfiguringoutconnectionbetweenthese matters NAIT can successfully respond to possible challenges in the future.
Unlike the other province, Alberta is very pragmatic. It understand clearly what is the driving power behind its strong economic – oil. So everything built or develop here is connected with this economic core. Similar to that, as for NAIT, In the future it will continue its pragmatic attitude: seek to know- where we are, why we are here, and where we are going. Insight embody the capacity it needs here: always seek, always know, and always see.

Sustainable Strategy
Retractable Roof-to provide natural sunlight to the great hall, adaptable to weather and events.
Windmill-harvest the strong prevailing wind power in increase powerefficiency.
Atrium-to provide the learning hall with natural lighting.
Living/Biofilter Wall-to make both interior and exterior environmental friendly, shorten the distance between human and nature.
Green Roof-reduce heat gain during summer time and slow heat loss during winter.
Rainwater Havesting-harvest the rainwater collected by the green roof to contribute to the grey water source.
