Welcome to the City of Lakewood’s Fall/Winter Program. Discover how Lakewood parks and recreation make your life better. These six messages explain.

For 60 years, the City of Lakewood Recre-ation and Community Services Department has thrived on building community through fun, safe, family-friend-ly programming at our city parks.

From our famed Lakewood Youth Sports program to the after-school Activity Zone (pg. 26) our youth are provided with op-portunities to learn, grow and stay active in an encouraging environment. With our Halloween Carnivals (pg. 40), families get to make memories as they enjoy the season’s festivities with their little ones. And with the legendary Project Shepherd Holiday Assistance Program (pg. 17), Lakewood residents have proven time and again that we look out for our own.

Consistently creating positive spaces for neighbors to meet or families to gather, we are proud to figure so prominently in this City’s rich history and in the stories of so many Lakewood residents. As the

City closes its 60th year, what better time than

the Fall and Winter to get reacquainted with the programming that has helped make

Lakewood parks feel like home?

For more than 25 years, Lakewood has been a leader in water con-servation. We conserve drinking water every day by using “recycled water” on 70% of our 216 acres of irrigated parks, parkway panels and center medians throughout the city. The amount of recycled water used each year conserves enough pota-ble drinking water to serve well over 1,000 Lakewood homes. There is no watering restriction for using recycled municipal wastewater. In support of California’s water conservation efforts, the following has been implemented: n A 20% reduction of potable watering on parks, parkway panels and center medians. On athletic fields, this reduction will not com-promise the turf for sports activities. n Pressure washing of hard sur-faces will only be done to eliminate health and safety hazards. n Shut off nozzles will be used for any hand watering.

n Retrofitting all park restroom plumbing fixtures with water saving devices. Most parks, parkway panels and center medians are watered overnight. If you see watering during the day-time, it could be because of the following: n Sometimes watering schedules are altered due to a special event. n Repair or maintenance of the irrigation system is tak-ing place. n Irrigation systems that are manually operated are be-ing watered. n An athletic field is being renovated. If you see what appears to be a problem, such as a broken sprinkler head, please let us know. Following a major disaster, first respond-ers who provide fire and medical services will not be able to meet the demand for these services. Fac-tors such as number of victims, commu-nication failures, and road blockages will prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a mo-ment’s notice through 911. The CERT Pro-gram is about community readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emer-gency and disaster situations where commu-nity members will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. The CERT program is 21-hours of FREE classroom instruction and hands-on training, taught by FEMA Certified CERT Instructors in conjunction with Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s Department personnel. It is broken up into the following units: 3 Disaster Preparedness 3 Disaster Fire Suppression 3 Disaster Medical Operations I 3 Disaster Medical Operations II 3 Light Search and Rescue Operations 3 Disaster Psychology & Organization 3 Terrorism 3 Course Review and Simulation During each session participants are required to wear closed toed shoes and long pants (for safety purposes). The course will be held on three consecutive Saturdays and you must attend all three sessions to receive your CERT certification. Participants must be at least 18 years old.Pre-registration is required.37430 Sa 9am – 4:30pm 1/10, 1/17, 1/24 WSC Free

As the holiday season quickly approaches, we are re-minded of those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Over 3,000 individuals living in Lakewood, many of them children and seniors, will not be able to enjoy the holidays without the food, gifts and toys that many of us have come to take for granted. Project Shepherd, a combined effort of the Lake-wood Rotary Club and the City of Lakewood, now en-tering into its 42nd year of community service, makes the December holidays a bit more comfortable for those who are low income, on public assistance or un-employed. Eligible Lakewood residents may register between November 3 – 16 at either the Burns Com-munity Center or Palms Park. For specific registration information, please contact the Burns Center at (562) 925-7512 or Palms Park at (562) 865-6414. If you would like to assist people in need in Lake-wood, please send your donation to: Lakewood Project Shepherd, c/o Rotary Club of Lakewood, 5050 Clark Avenue, Lakewood, CA 90712 or include a donation on your LIFE form when registering for a class.
