Rationale

Marking,initsmanyforms,isanintegralpartofassessmentandwillprovidefeedbacktoeverypupil.WeaimtoprovideasystemofmarkingthatisconsistentandcontinuousacrossFoundationStage,KeyStage1andKeystage2withinourschool.Markingwillinformplanning,bediagnosticandenhancechildren’slearningbyultimatelyofferingguidanceonhowworkcanbeimproved.Itwillfocusonsuccessandimprovementneedsagainstlearningintensionsandsuccesscriteria,enablingpupilstobecomereflectivelearnersandhelpingthemtoclosethegapbetweencurrentanddesiredperformance.Markingallowsforself-assessmentwherethechildcanrecognisetheirdifficultiesandmistakesandencouragethemtoaccepthelp/guidancefromothers.Theaimistomarkpositivelyandconstructivelywheneverpossibletoenhanceself-esteemandconfidence.Effectivemarkingandfeedbackshould:-

MarkingProcedures

• Agreenpenshouldbeusedasitisincontrasttothepupil’swritingimplement.AGREENhighlighterorpenwillbeusedtoidentifywhetherthechildhasunderstoodthesuccesscriteriaandMETtheirtargetsforthelessonorpersonaltarget.APINK/purplehighlighterorpenshouldbetoidentifyhowtomakeworkevenbetter/workhighlightedinthiswaymustbeeditedandrespondedto(seeappendix).

Year2andYear6• InordertomeettheY2andY6requirements,markingwillbetoinformthepupilduringabuilduptoa

longerwrittenpieceofwork.PinkpenwillbelimitedinthesecondhalfoftheyearleadingtoformalassessmentinY2andY6.Peerandself-marking/editingtocreateimpendencewillpromotedtoshowknowledge,understandinganduseoftherequiredskills.THINKPINKGOODTOBEGREEN.

• Inwrittenpieces,theschoolmarkingcodewillbeusedbystaffandpupilstoallowforreadingandprogressbeingmade.Asfaraspossible,markingwillbedonedailyorwhenapieceofworkiscompleted.Markingcanalsobeverballymarked(VF)asthishassignificantimpactuponprogressandmarkedingroups.Ifdistancedmarked,thechildwillbegiventimetoreadandrespondtocomments.

• Markedinrelationtosharedlearningquestionsandthechild’sattainments• Asfaraspossible,timewillbespentwiththechildtoensuretheyunderstandthecommentsandthe

targetsset• Teacherswritingtobeclearandlegible.• TAscanmarktheworkofchildrentheyworkedwith,followingtheguidelinesinthispolicy.Stampswillbe

provided(eg‘TAsupported’).

Childrenwillrespondtomarking• Encouragedtoevaluatetheirownworkbeforemarking,takingintoconsiderationthesharedlearning

objectivesandanypreviouslysettargetsintheirbooksorcriteriatowardstheirownAgeRelatedExpectations

• Encouragedtoreflectupontheirownwrittenworkbeforemarkingandtaketheopportunitytocorrect,topracticeorinvestigateaproblem.Nextstepmarking,orreflectionstime,willbetimetabledwithineachlessontoenablechildrentohavetheopportunitytoevaluatetheirwork.

• ChildrenwillbeexpectedtoselfandpeerassessagainstLearningQuestionsandSuccessCriteria.• Theschoolmarkingcodewillbeusedbystaffandpupils• Teachersshoulduseacolourofpen/penciltocontrastwiththewrittenworkofthechildren

QualityMarkinginEnglishInQualityFeedback

• Markingwillfocusonwhatthechildrenarelearningandtryingtoimprove• Ideallymarkingshouldbecomeapartofthedevelopingdialogueresultinginpupilprogress

Thisisbestdoneduringaunitofworke.g.formativeratherthansummative.• Timewillbeallocatedforchildrentorespondtocomments

Webelievethatcorrectinghasitsplaceinmarkingbutonlywhenitcontributestoanimprovementinapupil’swork.Errorsneedtobepointedoutifapupilistoimprovehis/herwork,whicherrorsandhowmanywilldependonmanyfactors.Commentscanbemadeverballyorinwrittenformtocommunicatetheirmessage.Inthecaseoffoundationstagepupils,feedbackneedstobeasimmediateaspossible.Teachers are expected to correct / ask pupil to correct (depending on age group) non-negotiable Age RelatedExpectationsegcapitallettersandbasicpunctuationWeconstantlyassessthechildren’swork,establishingtheirachievementsShowingsuccessinEnglishTheteacherorreaderofthepieceofwork,identifiesplacesinthechild’sworkandthenhighlightormarkstheseingreen.Thesesuccessesshouldbeinthecontextofthefullabilityrange,sodifferentchildrencouldhaveanythingfromonewordtoacoupleofsentenceshighlighted.IndicatingimprovementHighlightormarkworkinpink/purpleindicatespreciselywhereimprovementcouldbemade.Theimprovementisthenmadeattheendorabovethepupil’swork.WholepassagescanbeeditedwhenneededGivinganimprovementsuggestion:Peerandself-assessment

Animprovementsuggestioniswritten/askedfor/bytheteacher/self/anotherchildtohelpthechildknowhowtomakethespecificimprovement.Therearethreemaintypesofimprovementprompts.Wewillensurethattimeisallocatedwithintheteachingdayforpupilstorespondtotheirwritten/oralcommentsbytheclassteachersinordertheycanactuponthedevelopmentpoints.

VerbalFeedbackItisimportantforallchildrentohaveoralfeedbackfromateacherdependingonthetask.ThisdialogueshouldfocusuponsuccessesandVFwillbeputinthemarginofthepupil’sbook.Gforguidedcanalsobeused.

AcknowledgementmarkingTheremaybetimeswhenapupilmarkstheirownwork,suchasatimetablestest,arithmeticorspellingtests.Atickinthemarginwillbeusedtoacknowledgethemarkingdone.

Children’sresponsetothecommentsPeerandself-assessmentForpeerassessment,thesameconceptofidentifyingareasofstrengthandthosetodevelopwillbeused.Muchofthiswillbedoneorallyandchildrenwillusepens/pencilstocorrect

Self-AssessmentASSESSMENTFORLEARNING-AfLThechildrenwilluseaRAG(Red,Amber,andGreen)orSMILEYFACESsystemtoinformtheteacherhowwelltheybelievetheyachievedthelearningobjectivesRed(SadFace)-IhavenotattainedmanyofthesuccesscriteriaandwouldlikesupportAmber(StraightFace)-Ihaveattainedenoughofthesuccesscriteriatobuildonmyunderstanding.InKS2thechildisencouragedtosaywhatitistheywouldlikesupportwithGreen(SmileyFace)-Ihaveattainedmost,ifnotallthesuccesscriteriaARAGratingsystemwillalsobeusedintheplenarysessionssuchasthumbsupanddownandinbetween,asabove.

CorrectionProcedures

• Correctionswillbecompletedunderneathornearbytowork.Alternatively,thechildcancreatetheirownsymboltoshowweretheworkhasbeenedited.

• Rubberswillnotbeusedforcorrectionsunlessdirectedbytheteacher• Errorswillbeneatlycrossedoutwitharuler• Incorrectspellingsmaybeplacedinthechild’sspellinglogorbelowtheirwork(Yr1upwardsegatthe

backoftheirbookoraseparatewordbook) Markingmaybedoneby:

• Teacheralone• Teacheralongsidechild• Childalone(self-marking)• Otherchildren(peermarking)• TeachingAssistants(stampssupplied)• Supplyteachers

Thispolicywaswritteninconsultationwithallstaff.Itwasdecidedthatnoteverypieceofworkneedstobemarkedindetail,butfeedbackmustbegiventoextendedwriting.Asaminimum,thefollowingmustbeadheredto:
