The National Compost Conference

Facilities planned for the tour include:

Located in the Burnside Industrial Park in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), Miller Compost Dartmouth has been receiving and composting approximately 50% of HRM’s organic residuals since late 1998. HRM residents use bins for kitchen residuals as well as leaf & yard (L&Y) materials with orange or clear plastic bags used for excess L&Y. Once received, materials are sorted to remove any inorganics and then shredded for increased microbial degradation. Miller Compost Dartmouth uses the wide-bed Ebara system for composting. Processed material is then cured and screened for sale.

Miller Compost Dartmouth

This biosolids processing facility transforms dewatered biosolids and cement kiln dust (CKD) into a CFIA-registered fertilizer product marketed to agriculture. Approximately 35,000 tonnes of Halifax Soil Amendment (HSA) are produced annually.Following the plant tour, we will view a spreading demonstration of HSA at a nearby farm which has been using this product to support high quality crop production for many years.

N-Viro Systems Canada, Halifax Plant

The 480 cows at this farm live in a Compost Dairy Barn (CDB). This unique dairy housing system incorporates compost as bedding material. The CDB has a centre concrete feed alley with a bedding pack on either side. The pack is aerated twice a day to enhance microbial activity and freshen the pack surface. This bedding provides a comfortable, low bacteria count bedding that is later applied to agricultural fields.

Folkerstma Farms Limited, Milford

A national leader in construction and demolition waste diversion, this facility accepts and has found viable markets for a wide range of C&D materials including: wood waste, gyproc, asphalt shingles & paper, metal, tires, glass and mixed C&D materials. End markets include biomass power, road systems, new wallboard, septic sand and landfill cover.

Halifax C&D Recycling, Milford Yard

Well-experienced in organics collection and composting, the Colchester Composting Facility has recently been upgraded to accommodate increased volumes and a wider range of feedstocks.

Colchester Balefill and Colchester Composting Facility, Kemptown

Our conference tour day will be a full one. We’ll be visiting facilities involved in a wide range of organics residuals recovery and recycling, dealing with residential, IC&I, agriculture and wastewater residuals.Due to the many tours in the day, the buses will leave the hotel at 8:00AM.
