UPDATE ON THE FEDERATION FOR INFORMATICS PROFESSIONALS

Although many things slowed down for the summer, work on forming the Federation has continued at some pace. Gwyn Thomas and Wendy Dearing from the Federation Shadow Board, gave a presentation at the Health CIO Network Inaugural Summer School, and received a great deal of support for the Federation from CIOs. Also, as you can see later in this newsletter, the first Federation networking event is being held on 30th September in Llandrindod Wells, and will provide the opportunity for informatics professionals to meet and share views, information and best practice. The BCS ASSIST mentoring scheme is also growing, has received some very positive feedback, and will have a full Mentoring Day at EHI Live in November. We are delighted to announce a number of developments, which demonstrate the rate of progress being made towards the formation of a fully functional and influential Federation. 1. Two new professional bodies, Socitm and UK Tele-healthcare have agreed to join the

Federation and have become members of the Shadow Board.

Socitm is the professional body for people involved in the leadership and management of IT and digitally enabled services delivered for public benefit. Their involvement in the Federation will provide greater professional support for those working in social care and others areas of the public sector outside health and help support the integration of health and social care informatics professionals. (http://www.socitm.net)

UK Tele-healthcare is a membership based organisation for all Telecare and Telehealth professionals, service providers, Clinical Commissioning Groups and suppliers in the UK. Amongst other things, this will help promote closer links with service providers and the supplier community. (http://www.uktelehealthcare.com)

2. The Local Government CIO Council have expressed support for the Federation and its

aims and objectives, to foster closer working between Health & Social Care Informatics staff.

3. Discussions have been held with the relevant Government Health and Social Care Departments in all of the Home Countries. All have confirmed their support for the creation of the Federation for Informatics Professionals. We are now agreeing the working arrangements to align their policies for developing Health Informatics capacity & capability with the FED-IP strategy and plan. We hope you will agree that these are some significant steps forward, and we hope to have more to confirm soon. If you have any suggestions, ideas or comments please respond to the consultation questions here until the end of September.

PROFESSIONAL NETWORK FOR INFORMATICS STAFF

The Federation for Informatics Professionals is forming a professional network where all Informatics Staff share views on Informatics as a profession, best practice, and discuss how we can drive Informatics forward as a profession. Who better to contribute to this than the staff themselves! The first event will be held on 30th September 2014 at the Media Resource Centre, Llandrindod Wells. . This event is free to attend and is open to all. If you have any questions about this event please email [email protected].

You can find more details here.

BCS ASSIST MENTORING SCHEME

“Mentoring is of particular interest to me partly because it’s a good thing to do, but mainly because it holds the potential for opening doors for me and my colleagues in the NHS that would otherwise remain firmly shut.”

“Mentoring is a great way of building unusual synergies and parallel networking and BCS ASSIST is in a unique position to be able to achieve this kind of thing.”

BCS ASSIST recently held their second mentoring day event in London on the 28th of August. The mentorship programme continues to grow. Feedback received so far from those who have attended the last two mentoring events has been very positive. We have over 30 pairs of mentees and mentors matched so far and a large number who have joined the mentorship programme in the last few weeks. There’s a great momentum with Informatics staff wanting to move their career to the next level through the guidance and support of a trusted mentor. If you have any questions about the scheme or would like to join as a mentor or mentee, please email BCS ASSIST.

The next mentoring day event will be held at EHI Live on the 4th or 5th of November. Wendy Dearing recently spoke to EHI about the mentoring programme and what it’s achieved so far – see interview here.

The BCS ASSIST mentoring day at EHI Live is open to all – please register here. If you have any questions about the mentoring programme or the event please email [email protected].

EU US ACTIVITY eHEALTH COOPERATION INITIATIVE

Individuals from the Federation are also involved in continuing work on the joint EU:US activity. This has the parallel themes of systems interoperability and workforce mobility through a common language of necessary competences. Details of progress of both groups is to be found at http://wiki.siframework.org/EU-US+eHealth+Cooperation+Initiative. This initiative is described by the EU:US Roadmap and related actions can be found here.

MANAGING eHEALTH: FROM VISION TO REALITY (ISIE BUSINESS COLLECTION)

Published in August, this book is dedicated to the memory of Jean-Claude Healy. It has a number of UK-based contributors (including UKCHIP Board member, Jean Roberts) and aims to give a broad overview of eHealth concepts and an in-depth analysis of some of the important related issues, including professional registration.

RICK JONES, PROFESSOR OF CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY AND HEALTH INFORMATICS

We are very sorry to hear about the passing of Rick Jones. Rick was instrumental in setting up YCHI with Susan Clamp in 2001, the Informatics Leadership programme for the SHA and the MSc in Health Informatics in 2008. He also built on his very wide-ranging academic and technical expertise to direct some major commercialisation projects in clinical test interpretation and decision support software. Under his leadership, a team within YCHI gained international recognition as experts in the field of complex algorithms and quality-assured software for clinical risk calculation, working with leading international diagnostics companies PerkinElmer and Genzyme Genetics. More recently working with TPP he helped drive the creation of ResearchOne, the largest research database of e-health records of its type in the world and he was similarly active in forging links with other companies including pioneering work with Phillips and Abbott. Rick was the undeclared national champion for informatics in pathology, leading the national laboratory medicine catalogue and advising and inspiring the modernisation of pathology in the NHS through tireless lobbying, major reports and a recent national conference. He was one of the key authors of the narrowly unsuccessful 2012 bid for a national MRC eHealth Centre which subsequently formed the basis for the successful MRC Medical Bioinformatics Centre that has created the new £12m MRC/ESRC Leeds Institute of Data Analytics. The full list of Rick's activities and achievements is much longer than this summary and he was as tireless at helping individual students or colleagues with ideas as he was at building a major impact nationally. Those of us who knew him well were aware that he had had a long battle with cancer but he kept this very private. For most of us he was a wildly enthusiastic, generous guy with hugely bold ideas and the intellect, friends network and winning grin that meant he could just about get away with making these things happen. For everyone that knew him he was a nice guy with big smile. It has been a privilege and a joy to work with him. I'm sure that's how he'd like to be best remembered.
