As part of the Work Projects Administration’s American Guide Series, Kansas’ first guidebookresulted from the research papers contained in this collection. Nearly half of Kansas’ counties -- 51 of105 -- are described in these papers. The subjects examined include the following: geography, earlysettlement history, music, religion, art, education, agriculture, industry, government, transportation,tourist accommodations, points of interest, and notable personalities. Biographical data about thewriters is included as well as their personal evaluations of the Federal Writers’ Project, an undertakingof the WPA. It is suggested that the “American Guide Classification of Topics” file (Box 1) beconsulted before beginning research in this collection.
