• The UFRJ has 3 campuses: Cidade Universitária, Praia Vermelha and Macaé (a fourth campus will be set up in Xerém, a city about 40 minutes away from Rio);

• There are other institutes, faculties, and units outside the campuses such as the IFCS (Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences), the National Museum; the Valongo Observatory; the Law School; the Music School, the Laboratory School etc.

• Praia Vermelha: the university oldest campus. It was a hospital for the mentally ill and in 1949 the space was donated to the UFRJ. It is placed in one of the most beautiful sites of Rio de Janeiro, quite near the Sugarloaf (many academic unitis of the Center of Juridical and Economic Sciences and of the Center of Philosophy and Human Sciences are placed there)

Ocean Basin

• the third largest and deepest ocean basin in the world;

• designed to carry out tests of structures and equipments used in the exploration and production of oil and gas offshore.
