Unfortunately,Trevithick'slocomotivewasnotpreservedbutboth

LocomotionNo.1andStephensonsRocketwere.Replicasofbothhavebeen builtandareoperationalprovidingthepublicwitharealhistoryofthebirth ofourrailways.

Over700steamlocomotiveshavebeenpreservedintheUK,many completelyoverhauledandoperationalontheUKsheritage

railways.ONEIMPORTANTCLASSWASNOTPRESERVED, BUT.

But.......................AlthoughtheexpresspassengerclassA1

wereallscrapped,theA1Locomotive Trustdecidedtofollowtheproduction lineoftheselocomotivesandbuiltthe brandnew60163Tornado.This

locomotiveisnowfullyoperationaland haulspassengerchartertrainsontheUKs

nationalsystem.

AtriumphantreturntoLondon

(KingsCross)wherethousandsof wellwishersawaitedherarrival.

Atleastthreeothersteam

locomotivesofnonpreserved classesareinvariousstagesof construction.

AmendmentstoanewEUdirectiveonmailandtelephone orderbusiness(DistanceSelling).

WithdrawalofaproposedEUdirectiveonSafetyinthe Workplace(SocalledHotSurfaces)whichwouldhave requiredheavylaggingoflocomotivefireboxesandpipes.

Researchonsmokeandexhaustgasemissionsandon treatmentofwaterinsteamboilers.

Thischarterhasbeencreatedtoguidedecisionswhichwillresultin heritagerailwaysbeingenjoyedbyfuturegenerations.Heritage

railways

havebeenverysuccessfulinrescuing,restoring,preservingand

operating historicequipment.Wehopethatthischarterwillhelpeveryone

involved

toseeopportunitiesformakingwisedecisions.Ithasbeencreatedto accompanytheseveralotherchartersrelatingtoheritageconservation.

PurposeTheRigaCharterisastatementofprincipleswhich

guidetheconservation,restoration,maintenance andrepairanduseofhistoricrailwayequipment.Itis

hopedthatthiswillhelpourmembersmakewise decisions.
