September 2019

Dear Sisters in Christ:

We’re excited to announce the theme for this coming year’s retreat for the wives and widows of

Indiana District pastors is “FED, FILLED, AND FOCUSED: Fed by the Word, Filled by the

Spirit, Focused on Serving.” It’s scheduled for February 7-9, 2020, featuring Deb Burma as

our keynote speaker and Bible study leader. Deb is an author for Concordia Publishing House

and a sought-after speaker for women’s conferences, retreats, and ministry events. Read her

full bio, page 3.

Our theme is based on Romans 15:13 “…May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in

believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope...” In these

challenging days, it’s so easy to fill our days with the things of this world that don’t last or satisfy.

But our Lord offers us guidance and Deb Burma will help us “Sip, Savor, and Drink Deeply.”

There also will be time for contemplation, for connecting with sister pastors’ wives, and for

relaxing! We are returning to the wonderful Inn at DePauw in Greencastle, IN. If you joined us

before, you know what an ideal place it is for a retreat. We hope you will join us in February for a

restful and inspiring weekend of coming together as Christian women.

Prayerfully consider setting aside some time for yourself and your spiritual growth. It’s not selfish

for you to take some time for yourself as a woman of God. We hope to see you!

Your 2020 Katie Retreat Committee

P.S. You’d like to save money, wouldn’t you? Please take advantage of early registration and register before Dec. 31st!

Partial scholarships are available. We hope you do not let financial difficulties keep you from attending! Contact Harriet Armstrong ([email protected]).

The Inn at DePauw University in Greencastle makes for a relaxing weekend away for our retreat.

WHY A ‘KATIE’ RETREAT? It is in honor of the remarkable wife of Martin Luther -- Katie. We are all Katies as we serve together with our husbands in our own unique ways. Come join us at the Inn at DePauw University (www.innatdepauw.com) for a time of spiritual and emotional growth as we retreat. Our goal is to renew, refresh, relax, rest, and develop relationships with other women in the district who are or have been in that special role of being married to a pastor.

“Sip, Savor, and Drink Deeply:

Receive God’s Overflowing Gifts” Description: The idea of a coffee break is enticing, isn’t it? Whether you prefer to sip a strong cup of Joe, slurp a steamy cup of cocoa, or savor an espresso, prepare to take a break from the daily grind for a real pick-me-up! And even if coffee isn’t your beverage of choice, you look forward to downtime, especially if it’s spent with a friend who wants your company. Jesus is such a friend. The Lord wants your company. He invites you to meet with Him. You will be filled-to-the-brim as you get away to be grounded in God's Word. Just imagine what He has in store for you as you meet Him with your “cup” – your self – a vessel created

and chosen by God, redeemed in Christ, and ready to be filled for His purpose. Sip, savor, and drink deeply from His Word. Receive the outpouring of His grace, His joy, and His peace! “The God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound [overflow] in hope.” Romans 15:13 (1) "My Cup" - Stained no longer, we are Cleaned Out. (2) "My Portion & My Cup" - Filled-to-the-brim, we examine our circumstances in light of God's grace in Christ; (3) "My Overflowing Cup!" - We rejoice, learning that our cups truly do overflow in Christ!

BREAKOUT SESSIONS: 1:00 PM

SESSION: YELLOW - “Breathing out AND in: Balancing Family and Ministry”

Emily Cook

Description: This presentation will focus on the unique challenges we have as pastors’ wives and mothers. How do we draw healthy boundaries around church work? Is that even OK? What if your husband is giving too much? How do you handle expectations of a congregation? What kinds of pressures do our children experience and how can we help? Emily Cook will discuss several unhealthy coping strategies (most of them personally attempted) and lead a conversation on this topic: What is a healthy relationship between a congregation and the pastor’s family? “The Christian life is like breathing in (pulling into our souls the life-sustaining power of the Spirit) and breathing out (expending that life-giving power to others). The Christian life cannot function without both actions.” --Robert Benne

BIO: Emily Cook is a writer, teacher, mama, and wife. She has been married for 18 years, and her husband has been a pastor for ten of them. They have six children ages 8 to 16. SESSION: GREEN – “Visual Prayer”

SERVICE PROJECTS: 3:00 PM

In keeping with our theme, FED, FILLED, AND FOCUSED, we are offering two service project opportunities this year.

SESSION: CRAFT SERVICE PROJECT - Patrice Wagner/Sherry Shadday

Description: This year in place of a regular craft, we will offer two different service projects. Cozy Sock “Cupcake” What do you give a shut-in to help share the love of Jesus? They don't really need more "things". They do, however, usually have cold feet. And who doesn't like a new pair of socks? Come make a Cozy Sock "Cupcake" to bring some cheer and warm the feet of a resident of The Lutheran Home in Seymour, Indiana. Saturday afternoon we will be rolling up pairs of socks and putting them into holders to make them look like cupcakes with a cherry on top. We will package them up with a ribbon and tag. You can take this service project idea back to your congregation to share the warmth of Jesus' love with them too. Service Project: Physical/Spiritual Give-Away Bag

Street corners have become a popular place for people to beg for money while vehicles wait at a stop light. Though we may be annoyed by this danger, it is an expression of need. Here is an opportunity to nourish the body and soul. Saturday afternoon, you may fill a bag with items, take it home, and add a church brochure. Keep it in your car and hand it out the window when you see someone begging at a stop light.

If you wish to participate in either of these service projects, please indicate on the registration form to help us plan appropriately.
