based nonprofit working to advance natural refrigerants, particularly in the retail food sector. With members from throughout the retail and refrigeration industries, NASRC

has its pulse on the latest policies, innovations, trends and challenges when it comes to choosing commercial refrigeration options. This presentation will introduce NASRC, its role in driving positive change, and how change that fits into the context of recent policies and industry developments.

The presentation will focus on current market trends and options within commercial refrigeration, and how EPA and CARB policies are shaping where the market is headed. The industry is constantly innovating and finding ways to address the hurdles that slow our shift to non-fluorinated options.

golden gate chapter president’s Message, february 2017

Seeking Building Energy Quotient Stories…

Welcome Golden Gate ASHRAE members and friends,

In Aug 2015 our society president David Underwood spoke to a room full of Region X chapter leaders including me (14 chapters total) about his biggest personal 2015-16 goals for chapters to help with over the next year. At the top of his list was for chapters to work on increasing awareness and participa-

tion in ASHRAE’s Building Energy Labeling Program (aka bEQ). If you were one of the lucky attendees of our December meeting, you may recall hearing from our current society president speaking on the third of his 3 main initiatives, “Adapt bEQ for use in our student branches.” The fact that bEQ has been part of the presidential theme for our last former and current president lead to me reaching out to our member base and friends with this message.

I’m reaching out with a request for a single individual in our member base to share their experience(s) of going through the bEQ process at one of our upcoming 2017 meetings. If you person-ally certified one or more buildings through the bEQ program (or know somebody who has) and feel you have a few lessons learned that you would be willing to share with our

members, I’d like to have you speak for 10-15 mins at our meeting as to how someone new to bEQ could get started with their own building(s). if you’ve cal-culated it, we’d love to hear about any payback of other financial benefits identi-fied. If you have the experience, the interest and a compelling story to tell that you believe our members would benefit from hearing, please reach out to me or our President Elect Nikola Kravik.

I look forward to seeing you at our February meeting,

Tyler Bradshaw, President 2016-2017ASHRAE Golden Gate Chapter

February 2017…Already!! Golden Gate Chapter member is one of the first to visit Cuba!! “Join ASHRAE….See the World!” Tom Gilbertson, Chapter Historian

Get this straight!….Todd Elmgren made a two-week visit to Cuba on a special State Department Passport …in 1997…as he was basically “conscripted” by the U. S. Government to commission the HVAC equipment at the U.S. “Embassy” in Cuba…that was in a rented-portion of the Swiss Embassy….Interesting!

This further points out that with a “roll of drawings” under your arm…you can probably enter almost any secured place….if you simply tell the guards that you are there to “fix the air-conditioning!”...well…there was a bit more to it!...for this early visit.

So how did our Golden Gate Chapter’s, “Todd”…become so qualified, that Todd ended up in a very “touchy” situation…at the “request” of the Federal Government?

First, you go to Clarkson College and get a mechanical engineer-ing degree….make that 1978…then you go to work for the Trane Company…and spend 6-months in an extensive schooling program, receiving a very thorough introduction, and real training in air-conditioning…and that means heating, cooling, ven-tilation, filtration, refrigeration, piping, sheet metal, mechanical estimating, psychometrics, heat transfer, controls…etc…all based on a real understanding that a mechanical engineer already has in thermodynamics, Mollier Diagrams, and machine design…to start with!....Just in case you thought that his study and training were “soft” subjects…(learned by tapping on an I-Phone and asking SIRI)…..it was a training program that was full-time for 6-months….building on what was already learned.

Then Todd ventures into the San Francisco Sales Office for the Trane Company …and after 20 years experience…moves to manage the Trane Office in Oakland in 2007…and lives by his wits applying water chillers, roof-tops, building management controls, all big ticket items…when long before that…he applied (sold) tiny, internal components for steam traps to the University of California…The proper selection and operation of such mundane items as “steam traps”….are all yours….to apply incorrectly…(very easily) and really screw-up a systems….(Been there…Done that!)

The point is that being an accomplished sales engineer for a major manufacturer ….is not a job for a “one-trick pony”…actually you could call Todd’s career…. a 38-year...over-night success…..To the point that one-time they chose Todd to perform a very sensitive service in Cuba…long before you or I could even think of visiting there!

But the return from Cuba was not without some drama…U.S. Customs’ Officials descended upon this GG-ASHRAE Chapter Member…and were preparing to take the Cuban –rum, and the Cohiba Cigars…and perhaps imprison Todd…When the Special State Department Passport was presented…and all was “excused”.

Like I said ... “Join ASHRAE….See the World!”

research promotion

Jason Lesser, Research Promotion Chair What is the rP Campaign?

The RP Campaign is an annual fundraising campaign benefiting the funding of numerous ASHRAE Programs. These programs include:

• ASHRAE Research •ASHRAE Scholarships for undergraduate students •ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) development of new courses & materials •Graduate Research Projects (Grants-in-Aid) •Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) Leadership Training •Permanently endowed support to all of the above programs

The RP Campaign is overseen by the RP Committee, a standing ASHRAE Committee. The Committee is made up of 14 Regional Vice Chairs (RVC), 1 Consultant (past RVC), 3 Vice Chairs (past Consultant), and Chair (past Vice Chair). Staff support includes a 3-member team based at ASHRAE Headquarters. The RP Campaign raises over $2.2 million a year from over 6,000 donors. These donors are made up of ASHRAE Members, industry associations, and industry organizations.

Thanks to all who donated last year we raised $24,679 and just missed our goal of $27,00. This year we plan to exceed our goal of $27,000 and we have already had some generous donors. The Following individuals and companies have generously supported ASHRAE Research and Golden Gate Chapter for 2016-17 Campaign.

With the help of following Donors and Golden Gate Chapter Volunteers, we were able to raise the most amount of Research Funds over the last 10-years.Golden Gate Chapter received Challenge RP award at Chapter Regional Conference.

Your contributions are much appreciated. Thank you for making a difference and shaping tomorrow’s built environment today.
