Securing a Summer Job is Competitive

Tips For Teens

■ males: No jeans. Choose khaki pants or business pants with a pressed shirt. Ask a parent or teacher for suggestions if needed. Rarely is a shirt and tie required for a summer job interview but if you’ll be working in an office, go the extra mile and wear the tie to impress this employer. Clean, non-athletic shoes are a must too. Remember summer jobs are competitive. Make yourself stand out among the sea of teen job seekers.

■ Females: No jeans. You want to make sure that you dress better than your teenage competition, while dressing appropriately. No short or tight dresses and no flip flops or high heels that you can’t walk in. Look like a respectful, responsible teen. Wear little jewelry and no exposed shoulders, cleavage or stomach. Don’t overdo the perfume or the makeup. Impress at the Interview

Your summer job may allow you to wear shorts and tee shirts but

impress your employer by dressing for success in your interview.

Applying for a summer job can be challenging, considering hundreds of other teens and college students are also searching for those summer jobs around the same time. Whether you want to work indoors or outdoors, find the job that will make you happy the entire season because realizing after you start the job that you don’t care for the work is discouraging.Once you’ve made sure that the employer is looking to fill summer jobs, you’ll want to make sure you have a resume and cover letter. By having a good resume you can set yourself apart from other teens. Making a commitment to stay the entire season and following through on that commitment may

assure you an ongoing summer job for years to come.

Impress at the interview Here are some tips on helping you stand out over your summer job seeker competition.

1. Tattoos and body/face piercing may be cool but until you know your employer’s policy it’s best to cover up or remove. Summer jobs differ in whether visible tattoos are acceptable, so be ready for a no visible piercing/tattoo policy at some companies.

2. Get there early. A successful summer job interview starts here. Being on time results in almost always being late—so show up at least 10-15 minutes early. This shows the employer

that the interview is important to you.

3. Never arrive to an interview chewing gum or drinking a beverage. This shows disrespect and is a quick way to lose a great summer job to another teen.

4. Leave your cell phone in the car or silence it. A phone sounding off during an interview is disrespectful and shows the employer that the summer jobs he has available should go to more mature teens.

5. If you came with a friend or a parent. Leave them in the car. Show the employer that you are independent and can handle an interview with parental or peer guidance.

6. Offer your hand to the person who is conducting the interview. A hand shake goes a long way. Be formal—“hello,” “it’s nice to meet you.” No “hey” or “what’s up.” You’ll be evaluated from the moment you arrive. When offered a seat, without looking like a statue, sit up straight and don’t slouch.

7. Don’t forget to make eye contact with everyone you interact with during your interview and appear interested. Also—throw on a smile. Employers like happy employees.

did you know...

8. More than likely you’ll be asked the question, “Why do you want to work here?” By doing just a little research about the company you’ll be able to respond with things you like about the company and how you’d make a positive addition to their team.

9. Avoid those dreaded dead words – “like, “um”, “you know” – employers will really take notice.

10. Never request a restroom break once the interview has begun. Take care of this before you arrive. The interview may last 30 minutes or it may last over 1 hour.

11. Always speak with confidence.

12. Be curious. By asking questions about the summer job or the company, it shows the prospective employer you are serious about the job and their company.

13. Be on your best behavior, even when you think no one is watching you. Don’t try to sneak a phone call or a text. If you’re caught the employer will know that you can’t be relied upon.

14. Don’t rush. Trying to end the interview early shows you won’t take this summer job seriously or you’re not interested and the employer should look for another teenage candidate. Remember—the interview isn’t over until the interviewer is done.

15. Be clear when you are able to start a summer job. If you need time before you can begin let the employer know.

After the summer job interview After the interview, thank the interviewer for their time and ask them if it would be acceptable to follow up with them to answer any questions you may have. Go home and prepare a thank you letter or email expressing your interest in the summer job—get it out within 24 hours. If you haven’t heard back from the employer after a week, make a phone call or send them an email inquiring on whether a decision was made and expressing your continued interest. Once you’ve sent the email or if you left a voicemail message—be sure to check your emails and messages often. If the employer can’t get back in touch with you, they may assume you’re not interested and they will move on to the next candidate.

successstories

JOHNSON THE CHALLENGE Armelia Johnson lost her job and immediately went to WorkOne for help. She had finance experience in the healthcare industry, but was interested in changing her career path. As she worked one-on-one with a career advisor, she was introduced to the Reimagine Retail Training Program. Johnson found out that retail train-ing would close her skills gap to help her move towards a new career path.

THE SOLUTION Johnson successfully finished the Customer Ser-vice & Sales training course where she received nationally recognized certification. This gave her an additional boost on her resume and closed her skills gap. In addition to training she regularly at-tended job clubs to help her job search, post her resume to job sites, and network with others who were going through the same process she was.

THE OUTCOME Johnson struggled at finding employment at first, but she never gave up. She came across a listing on the Merrillville School Corporation website for Bus Attendant and applied right away. She was called in for an interview the very next day. John-son was offered the position where she accepted and she loves her job now. She expressed her gratitude for her WorkOne experience, “WorkOne has the tools and resources you need whether you are unemployed, or just need to get a job. WorkOne is there to help you transition and get you a job.”

GREENE

THE CHALLENGE Christy and Billy Greene came to AK Smith (the La Porte County Career and Technical Education Center) in the spring of 2017. Christy only had formal education through 7th grade. Billy dropped out of high school in the 10th grade. In spite of that, they soon found out that their intellectual skills were strong.

THE SOLUTION They are the parents of two young sons and both wanted to obtain their HSE. Christy attended classes first so that Billy could watch the children. They then reversed roles and Billy began classes while he worked nights. Christy passed her HSE exam in May of 2017 and Billy passed his in June 2017.

THE OUTCOME Christy is now working with the Michigan City Area Schools as an instructional assistant in the Adult Education Program. She also works as a caregiver with “Just Like Home,” an organization for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Christy’s newest project is to take the ParaPro IET at AK Smith.Billy has worked as a grocery store manager with Al’s Supermarket for 11 years. He believes that getting his HSE set off a new level of motivation and confidence. For example, he became involved with an Amateur Mixed Martial Arts program and has also been appointed by the Mayor to the Michigan City Historic Review Board. Bill also has aspirations to become involved in politics on a local level.

CHAMBERSTHE CHALLENGE Blisse Chambers was on a path of self-improve-ment when she decided to get her High School Equivalency Diploma (HSE), formerly known as the GED. She needed assistance brushing up her English and math skills to pass the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) to receive her diploma.

THE SOLUTION Demotte Adult Learning Center worked with Chambers to brush up those skills. She was grateful for the help and encouragement she received from her teacher, “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of the center.”

THE OUTCOME After receiving her HSE Diploma, Chambers enrolled in classes at Ivy Tech Community College to pursue her Electrical Engineering Technology Associates Degree. She is in her last semester where she has made the Dean’s List, and is in the National Honor Society. She plans to continue working towards her goal of becoming an Electrical Line Worker for NIPSCO.
