DAVID COWEN IS THE PRESIDENT of the Museum of American

Finance and is an expert on the

    American Financial system. The

    same financial system that was

    created by Alexander Hamilton

    centuries ago. A portrait of

    Hamilton hangs above the desk

in David’s office. We caught up

with him to discuss which traces

    of Hamilton’s financial legacy

still exist today and to get some

    insight into what, exactly, some

of the lyrics mean. Here is a brief

    history lesson from David Cowen:

“Legacy. What is a legacy?”The entire financial system is

[Hamilton’s] legacy! He set up the

    system that the Americans live

under. Finance is the horse to the

economy’s cart, only it did not

exist when Hamilton came to the

United Colonies. We had all the

    leftover debt and problems from

    the revolutionary war; he inherited

a very messy situation. He came into

office September 11, 1789 and he left at the

end of January in 1795. In that short time

    he accomplished an incredible amount

and set the young country up for financial

    success. That is his legacy.

“He took our country from bankruptcy to prosperity. I hate to admit it, but he doesn’t get enough credit for the credit he gave us.”Before he took office, the nation was

    effectively bankrupt. There was leftover

    debt that the Continental Congress

acquired during the war, domestic debt,

state debts — which some states were

not paying off — and international debt.

    The United Colonies borrowed money

from their ally the French who were

    helping both militarily and economically.

Hamilton said that debt must be

honoured. Why is that amazing? It gives

the United States great credit. If the debt is

honoured, people will be more willing to

loan to the US in the future. So, in a dozen

years when the US went to Napoleon and

said they wanted to buy New Orleans,

they were able to borrow from the premier

bankers of the day in London to pay

Napoleon. As a direct result of their good

credit the United States was able to double

    the size of their country.

“If New York is in debt, why should Virginia bear it?”Virginia didn’t have a lot of debt so they

wanted to know why they should be

paying for Massachusetts whose debt load

was much higher. Although the country

had beat back the British they still weren’t

unified as a country. The Virginians

were blocking Hamilton’s plan. In what

Cowen considers the most famous trade

    in American history, Hamilton traded

Alexander Hamilton (January 11, 1755 or 1757 – July 12, 1804) was an American statesman and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was an influential interpreter and promoter of the U.S. Constitution, as well as the founder of the nation's financial system, the Federalist Party, the United States Coast Guard, and the New York Post newspaper. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton was the main author of the economic policies of George Washington's administration. He took the lead in the Federal government's funding of the states' debts, as well as establishing a national bank, a system of tariffs, and friendly trade relations with Britain. His vision included a strong central government led by a vigorous executive branch, a strong commercial economy, a national bank and support for manufacturing, and a strong military. Thomas Jefferson was his leading opponent, arguing for agrarianism and smaller government.

the capital for the financial heart of the

country. There are stories that Jefferson

said, “I’m never trading with Hamilton

    again because I got hoodwinked

    into this.”

“The issue on the table: Secretary Hamilton’s plan to assume state debt and establish a national bank.”Hamilton established a centralized

bank. 80% of the funding came from

private money and 20% was funded by

the government and called The Bank of

    the United States. Hamilton’s framework

would give the government a safe place

to store funds, allow them to extend

credit and print currency. In short it

would put the young country on par

    with European countries. Its framework

of branches would also establish a more

efficient way to deposit and withdraw

funds — instead of having to send the

money by horse, book entries could

    be made and communicated between

branches. By the time he left office in

1795 the bank had 5 branches.

“The ten dollar founding father.”When Hamilton took office, the young

country was still using foreign currency.

    Hamilton decided that the country

needed its own national currency. While

    foreign currency remained in circulation

for years the US selected the dollar as

the official monetary unit in 1785. And

in 1792 The Coinage Act organized the

system that introduced gold, silver and

    copper coinage.
