Directors Message

The Awards Banquet is what we look forward to every year, this year being no exception. It was great, every-one enjoyed each others good company, and the carrot cake too. Many thanks to our team that made the ar-rangements with The Golden Steer. Behind the scenes, our team also rounded up the door prizes (with foot work and cash) which always are a hit and add to the festivities. Thanks again to George Kowats, John Strampher, and Jim Martoza!!! Some other behind the scenes work that also deserves credit are the creation, printing, and assembly of the Officer Recognition Certificates, designing and procuring the 40th Anniversary mugs, engraving for the Directors Award Trophy, and crafting the out-going directors Plaque of Apprecia-tion. For all of that, Thank You Bob Helgeson and Jim Farris!!!! Our Region’s turn to put on the 2010 Northwest Meet is only three years away and we need to start thinking about a location for it now. We need a volunteer to act as a “Site Focal” and provide a guide of what site amenities we are looking for and to correlate the feed back and recommendations from other members. Dur-ing our travels this year we can all keep our eyes open for a possible site, see if it matches our guide, and then submit our recommendation to our focal. At one of our fall meetings our focal can present the findings so that we can collectively select a preferred site. I will ask for a “Site Focal” volunteer at our February meeting so please consider helping us get a head start in preparation for our big event. Thank you. Bill Damm

February Meeting Program

This months program will be our club auction to support club activities. We have been told that this is one of the most popular meetings of the year! If you have missed previous auctions, please join us for this one - you'll be entertained! Bring two or more things that someone else might cherish and you can part with. They say, "One person's junk is another person's treasure." But we are not looking for junk; rather something you will let go of that others might battle over! In past years, we have had everything from Elvis records, sports memorabilia, handmade items and things good to eat, tools, Chevy parts, vintage magazines, Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra tickets, vintage clock, and a stick horse that played the Lone Ranger music! Proceeds from the sale will be returned to you in support of our events later this year. Please participate - come to the meeting and bring a couple of items to contribute and join the fun. Have some bucks in your pockets or bring your checkbook to buy some treasures! If you do not always bring your spouse, significant other, or friend this is a great time to bring them along. Hope to see you the 26th at Tillicum Middle School in Bellevue at 7:30 PM. "LET THE BIDDING BEGIN!"

HELP, HELP, HELP !!!!! The Club would like to celebrate its 40 years with a grand party, dinner, or memo-rable outing this summer. We need some suggestions about what you think would be appropriate. Whatever we do must be organized and planned now. But most of all, we have to agree on a date for the celebration so that it can be placed on the calendar. Email or present your ideas to any Board Member.

The Early Years (cont. from page 1) The major objective for most of these events was to get their cars on the road, before the public, and to spread the word there was an organization alive and ready to serve owners of vintage Chevrolets. Many of those enthusiastic members of this new Club lived closer to Seattle resulting in events taking place more and more in the Seattle Southern Metropolitan area. New members be-gan joining in both the Tacoma and Seattle areas. As stated in the article last month, by 1971 it was evident there was enough interest in Tacoma to support an additional Region in that city. It was then that the Mount Rainier Region was organized. During this early recruiting period a single significant event took place that helped solidify our Re-gion and other VCCA Regions in the Northwest. The popular Centralia September Swap Meet was a gathering point for vintage car people living in the Northwest. The picture of the Puget Sound Re-gion and Columbia River Region members at this gathering in 1967 was printed in the January is-sue. At this gathering, and a subsequent one in 1968, conversation focused on organizing an an-nual event. On June 22, 1968 Columbia River and Puget Sound vintage Chevrolets gathered at Rainbow Falls State Park. This event and the 67- 68 meet-ings at the Swap Meet lead to the popular annual VCCA Sep-tember overnight gatherings at Fort Borst State Park in Cen-tralia. These lasted until 1976. That year the three Regions agreed to hold a three-day VCCA-Sanctioned Meet the follow-ing year. Straws were drawn to determine who would organ-ize the first meet. Mount Rainier was selected as host for the Northwest Meet in 1977. The next year the Columbia River Region drew the short straw. That left the Puget Sound Re-gion to handle the event in 1979. Continued from p 4. In January we featured Roger Orness’ ’33 coupe. It was there at those first VCCA events. This month the focus is on Nick and Brenda Bryan’s ‘25 series M truck, another vehicle present during those early years. Nick is gone now but the vehicle is still with us in the garage of Dennis and Gerri Johnson. Dennis says, “We met Brenda Bryan at the 2004 Spring Swap Meet in Monroe. Brenda was one of the few vendors with four cylinder Chev parts at this or any other swap meet we have attended the last few years. We bought a few parts from Brenda and visited a bit. Later we returned to Brenda's stall as it seemed to be the only spot of interest to us at this meet. We bought a few more things and visited more. Brenda said she had more 4 cyl. Chev parts at home in Omak and that she also had a 1925 Chevrolet one ton truck. We later made arrangements to stop by Brenda's place in Omak on our way home from a tour at Worley, Idaho in July of 2004 to take a look at her 4 cyl. Chev parts. We knew that Brenda's late husband, Nick Bryan, had been the VCCA Technical Advisor for 1925 Chevrolet trucks and my son, Dan had seen his truck and talked with Nick years ago but I had never had the privilege of meeting the man. When we first saw the ‘25 Chev truck we were impressed but Gerri was even more impressed with the one-half size miniature ‘25 Chev truck that Nick had built. Brenda had not mentioned the half-sized truck and it was quite a surprise. The two trucks and the other four cylinder parts just seemed to follow us home.” This 1925 Chevrolet Series M Utility Express Truck was built in May 1925 at Oakland, California and was sold new in Omak, Washington as a chassis only with no cab or truck body. The truck was first used to haul lumber. Later, the owner got a contract to haul school children in the Omak area and a body was built for this purpose. It was later used as a farm truck until the late 1950s by the original owner. The truck was purchased by Nick Bryan of Omak in the early 60’s. He restored it first as a flat bed (as shown in the January Tappet Chatter and on page 4) and then later Nick re-stored and installed a Martin Perry Canopy Express body. The chassis is pictured in Denman’s 60 Years Of Chevrolet and then again in the revised version. Nick and Brenda moved to Seattle in the 1960s and were very active in the early days of the Puget Sound Region with this truck but moved back to Omak in 1973. Since the purchase of the ‘25 Chev truck and the half-size miniature, they have been displayed at the ATHS truck shows in Shelton and the Johnson grand children have had a great time driving the little truck around the fields. Some of those energetic earlier VCCA members who are now 30 to 40 years older and still with us include, Walt Blair, Roger Orness, Ron Henry, George and Phyllis Kowats, Lee and Carol Folsom, Don and Sallie Comstock, Jim Farris, Gary and Joanne Barquist, and Ernie and Gennette Tear. The first National VCCA Anniversary Meet, the 10th year of the National organization, was held in Indianapolis, IN. in 1971. The Puget Sound Region was represented at that event by Walt Blair. A much larger contingent made there way to the 15th Anniversary gathering at Colorado Springs in 1976. There will be more about that epoch journey by some courageous Puget Sound Region members next month when “The Electric Years “ are covered.

Puget Sound Region VCCA Board Meeting Minutes January 18, 2007

The first Board Meeting of the year for the Puget Sound Region VCCA group was called to order at 7:00 PM by Director Bill Damm at Jim Farris’ home on Thursday January 18, 2007. Members present were Bill Damm, Jim Farris, Bob Helgeson, Bob Stamnes, Jim Martoza, Jerry Brownell, Sallie and Don Comstock, Carol and Lee Folsom, Betty and Dave Roberts, Jim Darby, Al Howe, Dave Haddock and Dick Jones. An agenda of items for discussion was distributed. May Meeting - The May meeting will be on May 21st due to Memorial Day holiday. Membership Status – There are currently 61 paid members. Jim Martoza noted that 56 members now have email capability. Treasurer Report – Sallie Comstock distributed the 2006 budget plan vs actual expenses, the club came in well under the budget. The 2007 budget was presented by Sallie with some small adjustments based on ac-tual 2006 expenses. Following a discussion Sallie made a motion to approve the budget, Bob Helgeson sec-onded the motion. The budget was approved by the board. Historical Records – There was a discussion of the 40th Anniversary of the PSVCCA. June 6, 1967 was the date of the first meeting of the club. There was discussion about the pictures that have been collected over the years and how they could be made available to members. A few members volunteered to scan some of the pictures onto CD’s that would become available in the future. 2007 Tours – There was a discussion on the status of the tours for this year by Jerry Brownell. February’s tour will be to West Seattle. Jerry is planning at least one tour per month with some pretty exciting desti-nations in the works. Program Plans – Jim Martoza mentioned there are 24 ideas they’re looking at. Club Store –Bill Damm brought up the idea of VCCA items available from other regions. Should we stock some of these in the club store? This generated some discussion about the possibility of volume discounts. The idea of creating a 40th anniversary T-shirt for the club was met with a positive response. It will be dis-cussed with the membership. NW Meet Assistance – A $500.00 assistance to the North Cascades Region for the 2007 NW Meet at Yakima was suggested by the board. It will be discussed with the membership. NW Meet Signs – Question was raised about providing PSVCCA meet signs to the North Cascades Region for the 2007 meet. Caution was raised that if the signs are made available that someone should have the responsibility to make sure that they are returned. NW Meet 2010 – PSVCCA has the responsibility for the NW Meet in 2010. There is a need to start identi-fying a location. Roster – The idea of adding members photos to the roster similar to the Columbia Region’s roster. It was decided to take pictures of the members at the banquet and at other photo opportunities to gather the pic-tures in time for the 2008 roster. Starting Times for Meetings – It was discussed and agreed that the current starting times for General Meetings and Garage Nights should stay the same as they are. Roundtable – Jim Farris needs input for the News Bit column, be sure to call or email him input. Jim Mar-toza suggested a change to the membership renewal form to allow members to indicate that all the current information is correct and not require members to enter all of their information each year. Next Board Meeting will be May 8th. Location to be determined. Jim Farris was a very gracious host for the Board Meeting, providing a number of refreshments. A spe-cialty was the home-made Bean Dip that Jim made himself, it was delicious!! Submitted by Dick Jones

Note: The registration form for the Northwest Meet in now on our WEB site. Copies will be available at the February Meeting.

The Editor had planned on covering the January Banquet in this issue but space was at a premium due to other items. The Tappet Clatter will cover our annual January Banquet in the next issue. If you have any stories about this years gathering please submit them to the Editor before the fifth of next month. Thank You. Also we are on the look out for interesting club historical material, photos, humorous or fac-tual stories of incidents. We hope to cover the entire 40 years of our history. So your sto-ries will fit in as the historical drama unfolds. Jim Farris

We need car-related issues to discuss in this feature. It helps our Club members with their cars as well as providing a opportunity for others to learn more about their Chevrolets. Contact Al Howe by phone or e-mail with any questions you feel might be included in the Glove Box. You can email Al Howe at [email protected] or Jim Darby at [email protected]. Former Glove Box columns are now included on our web site. Custodians of the Glove Box

Radiators By Al Howe

I needed some work done on the radiator of my 1927 Chevy and was having some difficulty finding a good place to have it done; that is, someone that had the skills and equipment to work on these old radiators. (It seems that this skill is a long-lost art no longer needed because the modern radiators are just "remove and replace".) I asked around and Jim Farris told me of a place down the road from him that seems to be okay. He was talking about the West Seattle Radiator Service in West Seattle owned by Bud Burns. I saw a photo of Jim's radiator in Bud's book, along with some other radiators that he had custom made for other customers, so I know this is the place Jim went. I haven't gotten my radiator back yet and that will be the real test; but I think he will do a good job on it. Incidentally, Bud has a radiator for a '37 Chevy brought in by a customer about two years ago and it has never been claimed. It has been modified to hold pressure. He would be willing to sell it for about $250 if anyone is interested. Located at: 4460 37th S.W., West Seattle. Phone number: 206-935-7175. I will list this in the classifieds also. Bud is talking of retiring, but he may be doing some work at his home in the future as a hobby. I hope so. I would like to see a "referral" column in the Tappet Clatter for places like Bud's where we can go for help on things like brakes, motors, etc. What do you think? Al Howe

Safety Corner Power Machines are patiently waiting for our mis-takes. They are lying in wait for one of your fin-gers or toes. The tools we use, run by a power source, such as routers, table, band & skill saws, lawn mowers, nail guns or any powered machine can easily wipe out an extremity if we are not care-ful. Before using a powered tool count your fingers and toes using the time to assure they are safely out of the way.

We’ve all had accidents that could be have been avoided. What have you done to yourself that would make a good Safety Tip for others? Tell on yourself!! Let us know via email or phone.
