February Newsletter

Message from the Principal:

We have many cool activities and special guests scheduled for February 2015. In an effort to

“Bring the World to our Students”, we are continuously looking to provide our students with a variety of

positive educational opportunities. We would like to thank the Brighter Futures Program for their financial assistance in purchasing

24 magazine subscriptions for CBMES. It has been a while since we have had magazine subscriptions in

our library. Magazines are engaging, not intimidating. Magazines educate and entertain – holding our

attention and igniting imagination. These magazines that Brighter Futures graciously subscribe for us will

arrive periodically with fresh information that is both timely and timeless. These magazines will help

CBMES staff to foster a sense of ownership and build self-esteem within our wonderful students. We all

remember our favorite childhood memories of reading relevant magazines. People of all ages love

magazines and love to share them, especially for literacy. Thanks again Ms. Connie Ballantyne & Mr. Hal

Cameron.

Starting in February, we have booked our local hockey arena for Fridays from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

All students entering the ice area will be required to wear a helmet with a mask for safety and injury

prevention reasons. Thanks again to Willow Cree Health - Injury Prevention Program for purchasing 50

helmets with masks for us which greatly enhances our physical education program. Thank you again to

Linda Gamble and the Injury Prevention Program for also sponsoring the Wide Open Children’s Theatre

that will be coming on February 5. Magical Munsch tour is a theatrical puppet show based on 6 stories by

Robert Munsch. Magical Munsch stories are Angela’s Airplane, Moira’s Birthday, 50 Below Zero, Get

Out of Bed, Alligator Baby, & More Pies. This one hour presentation will feature 28 puppets, a live

narrator and loads of audience participation. Feel free to joins us.

February – Mikisiwpisim – Eagle Moon The month of January has been a very busy month with many activities within the school. The focus for the month of January was “Pipon”; we are right in the middle of winter. There was also many other activities enjoyed by the children. The month of February will again be very busy. There are activities almost every day for February plus the mid-term break. Parents, please follow your February school calendar for all the activities. The students in the Cree class are also progressing very well with learning Cree words. Hello! We have been busy learning about all different kinds of animals. The students

have been reading about animals in their habitats. We made beautiful arts and crafts

and learned some new songs about animals. I know if you have anything to add to this

topic at home, I’m sure your child would surely enjoy that!!

February we will be focusing on friendship. How do we treat a friend? The students will

also be learning about our First Nation’s culture & traditions. The students are also

practicing recognizing their names and even writing it!

Greetings from Grade 1

Thank you parents and caregivers for giving special attention to your child’s reading experiences. Students who have been bringing back their READING AND WRITING homework bags are always excited about choosing their own books. They are proud of their accomplishments as writers and we celebrate each child... even if it's one sentence about the book they have read. Their writing responses to the books they read with their families are amazing! Our math unit is on Numbers and Operations....this involves making sense of numbers, number patterns, counting in sequence to 50, skip counting to 100, adding to 20, subtracting from 20 and problem solving. Thank you for supporting your child in all his/her learning experience. *We will be having our Valentines Party on Friday, February 13, at lunch time. A Valentines list of students will be sent out on Tuesday. You are welcome to send treats for 25 students if you would like, it's optional. Hello from Grade 3

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It’s hard to believe that February is already here!! February is a busy month and we have lots of special

events going on.

On Friday, February 13th our class will be having a Valentine’s Day party and students are welcome to

bring treats that day (cupcakes, cookies, chips, etc). We have a total of 18 students so please send enough

treats for each student. We will also be having a Valentine’s Day card exchange and I will send home a

class list later on this week.

After the February break, Miss Gardypie will be teaching full time and the students are lucky to have her

here with us. We have been learning many great things from her!

Greetings from Grade 2/3 Hello Parents/ Guardians, January has been a busy month! We were busy fundraising for our classroom fund and field trip. In total, we raised just over $900! I would like to say thank-you to everyone for your support and parents for your contributions. Just a few announcements for this month: Our Valentine’s party will be on Friday, February 13th, in the afternoon. Parents, you are welcome to stop in or send your child with a snack for the class. Students will be making their valentine boxes next week and when they’re finished we can start filling them with Valentine’s cards! We are also planning to go to the arena sometime in February to play broomball and skate. The arena is booked for the school’s use on Friday afternoons. We will send home more information closer to the date. Also a reminder for parents to send your child to school dressed for the weather. It is important students are dressed accordingly for the winter season (ski-pants, gloves, toque, scarf, winter jacket). Greetings from the Grade 4 Classroom

Tansi! It is hard to believe that January has come and gone which means that the school was busy and

productive. Reading fluency has been a strong focus going into our next reporting period. The DRA assessments will

be starting February 2, please make every effort to have your child in school every day. We are encouraging the

students to take their Reading Book Bags home for extra reading. Take about 10 - 15 minutes in the evening to read

with YOUR child. The IREAD challenge is to encourage students to read more at school and at home. Any books

that students read will be kept in a reading log which will be provided in their Red Reading Bags.

In Math, we worked on Statistics and Probability and now we are starting the Number Strand. This unit will take 4

weeks before we start the next strand. As always, I encourage parents to check with us for your child's progress. Our

grade four class, Mrs. B. Cameron, Mrs. L. Gamble, and Mr. G. Gamble would like to take this opportunity to wish

the community of Beardy's and Okemasis a special Happy Valentine’s Day. Enjoy this time with family.

Our next Family Literacy Night, is scheduled for

Thursday, February 12th from 5:00 – 7:00. We will be making a community blanket which is

intended to embrace the history of Beardy’s & Okemasis FN. Supper and socializing is all a part of

the evenings fun time together.

My role as an English Language Arts (ELA) Catalyst Mentor has taught me better ways of

teaching vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, which is what the staff at CBMES have set for

our literacy goals of the year. We are always looking at best learning environments for all of our

students. The staff at CBMES is excited about our students reading and writing improvements.

The Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) is beginning again on February 2nd, 2015 with another

group of students. This intervention is a successful way to work with students to build self-

esteem, as well as confidence in their reading and writing skills. LLI has become a great success

with the students and it will continue at CBMES for students to become better readers.

Student Services

This month the student support services will be fundraising for our program. We will be having full

meal deals, a pancake breakfast, a long john (donut) sale as well as a candy gram and other

canteens. The dates are listed on the calendar. Your support would be greatly appreciated so that

we can offer field trip opportunities to our students.

The recycling program is running out of the student support services room and so we decided we

should try and make a milk jug igloo. Any plastic milk jugs would be appreciated as the students

are eager to see the finished

product.

February Library News

The Scholastic Book Fair is back!

Three Storytellers and various Elders are going to visit!

The Book Fair will begin on Feb. 4th and end on Feb. 27th. All the students will have a chance to tour the Book Fair and see what is available. You are more than welcome to come and browse to see what we have. There will be two door prizes of $25.00 in books. No purchase necessary…just come see what we have and put your name into the draw box. The students will take home a flyer to show what type of books and school tools that will be available.

We are so fortunate to have three storytellers and Elders come to our school and tell stories to our children. They are as follows:

Math Catalyst/ L.L.I

Hello, hope everyone is enjoying this lovely weather we have been having lately. The month of February will be busy once again. The teachers and students will be diving right into the Numbers and Operations

strand in mathematics. Students from grades 3-4 will also be completing post assessments for this strand as well. We always encourage families to become involved with their child’s education. There are

several ways you can enhance your child’s mathematic skills. The following is an activity you can do together the next time you are at a grocery store.

Grocery Store Math

Before you go to the grocery store, have your child guess how much each item will

cost. Take the printout with you to the store and let your child fill in the actual

price. Then calculate the difference to see how close everyone came to the right

price.

Levelled Literacy Intervention (L.L.I.)

We have successfully completed the first group of L.L.I. students. Progress on their development and growth will be sent home with each child. We are also starting new L.L.I groups on February 2/15. If your child is selected you will be contacted by either myself of Mrs. L. Cameron. More information about the L.L.I. program will be sent home at a later date.
