January MeetingBy

Marilyn McCray, Master Gardener

President Connie Wierman called the meeting to order. She presented adetailed Financial Report for year-ending 2019 and the planned budget for2020, including some of the major budget programs for 2020 to give membersa high-level perspective of what's on tap for 2020. With the exception of theTraining Class which is already set up, most of these activities/events will needthe support of our membership and volunteers. She posted the open volunteerpositions for January, the key one being the Volunteer Coordinator.

One of our very own, the talented and inspiring Rasmey Mau Raymond, shared the video tour of her garden, Food for Family & Wildlife on Austin PBS'sCentral Texas Gardener, followed by a question and answer session. Thevideo, first aired in October of 2016, featured how she and husband Matthewreclaimed hard-packed soil to restore their 25 acres. Rasmey wanted organicfood for her young family, a fragrant cottage garden for pollinators, and habitatfor birds.

"Central Texas Gardener featured Rasmey a few years back when she workedat a nursery," said Linda Lehmusvirta, Producer. "I loved the story of how she

developed her own garden to provide food for her family and the wildlife.Rasmey's passion and enthusiasm, along with her encouragement, invitesnew and experienced gardeners to come along on her adventure!"

Master Gardeners Rasmey MauRaymond, Christi Shannon, andMarilyn Love along with ExtensionAgent Kate Blankenship participatedin the 2020 Miller Middle SchoolScience Night. Our display focused onfruits and vegetables easily grown inTexas which can be used to makehealthy smoothies using freshingredients. We had a colorful trifoldcovering the “Texas Grown” fruits and veggies. The students were able to ridea bicycle with a blender attached (mechanical transfer of energy) to make theirown smoothies. We provided recipes for the fruity and green smoothies thestudents sampled. A fun time was had by all!

Big plans are in the works at the Jacobs Well Demonstration Garden! TheBoard approved our budget to install a rainwater-based irrigation system andto re-design the existing beds to attract more pollinators. We’re meeting withRainkeepers Rainwater Harvesting Systems in Wimberley for our initialconsultation next week and plan to have the irrigation system up and runningby the end of March.

Along with providing native habitat for bees and birds, we’re taking aim at oureducation goal by adding more and better signage to help the public learnabout Hill Country native plants. With more than 2000 square feet in threebeds, we have a great showcase to work with. Thanks to the plan by ourpresident Connie Wierman, we’ll now be grouping plants by their waterrequirements—natural rainfall, occasional watering, regular watering. Connie’splan also lays out beds by color, height and bloom time to optimize the visualdisplay from spring through late fall.

The smaller bed in the back will feature native grasses, cacti and succulentsand native hardscaping. If everything goes according to plan, we’ll also installseveral shade sails later in the season to protect the young plants from theworst of the summer sun.

Get Involved! If you’re ready to get your hands dirty, we have two plantingdays coming up on Friday, February 28 from 10:00 a.m. until noon, Friday,March 6 from 10:00 a.m. until noon and Friday March 13 from 10:00 a.m. untilnoon. It’s a great way to earn volunteer hours, and we’d love to have you. Thisyear we have the added bonus of our HCMGA training class joining us in mid-March to do the final planting and spring clean-up, thanks to Philly Janowskiand Laurie Turner.

Bobby Knell is a recent graduate of the 2019 MasterGardener class. He has always had a passion forgardening ever since he was a teenager but didn’thave much of an opportunity to practice his skillsuntil after he retired. During class, he really enjoyedlearning about the importance of quality soil, andgardening techniques, but the class on fruit treesreally struck a chord with him. He learned aboutwhen to buy, how to cut it down, and when to plant.Knell says he is “still keen to learn more.”

When Mr. Knell isn’t busy traveling, you can find him volunteering at Jacob’sGarden as well as the Wimberley Playhouse where he is a co-lead at bothlocations. Mr. Knell is also our new president- elect and is looking forward tolearning on the job. He is also currently building his own greenhouse, or as helikes to call it, the “hot house.” There he plans to grow bonsai trees. He hasbeen interested in bonsai for a long time and has recently taken lessons onhow to rewire the trees and develop the proper soil necessary for success. Hisgoal is to create a forest with around twenty-four trees that are over two feettall. Although he admits that he is not very artistic with the skill of bonsai, heloves the challenge and is constantly learning. His hope is that one day he canpass this skill down to one of his grandchildren.

Texas Superstar®Program Monthly Update

byMarilyn McCray, Master Gardener

Texas Vitex Vitex agnus–castus

Vitex, a Texas Superstar® is knownas Texas Lilac or the Chaste Tree.Native of China and India, itnaturalized throughout the UnitedStates as long ago as1670. Vitex agnus castus belonged tothe official medicinal plants ofantiquity and is mentioned in theworks of Hippocrates.

Vitex is coarse growing and willbecome a small tree quickly; floweringis more spectacular if the plant ispruned heavily after bloom. It is a spectacular butterfly-attractingplant and hummingbirds love it.

For people in the warmer parts of theSouth, the ‘Lilac Chaste Tree’ hasbeen the shrub of choice to mimic themuch beloved lilacs that are restricted

Superstar ® Horticulturists now haveidentified and tested improvedvarieties such as ‘Montrose Purple’,‘LeCompte’ and ‘Shoal Creek’ whichhave 8 to12 inch long spikes. Thesevarieties will all be marketed underthe name, ‘Texas Lilac’ Vitex.

A concern has been raised about the“invasive” nature of vitex. There is aconcern about its weedy nature incertain areas “found in limestoneoutcrops and dry creek bedsthroughout Central Texas.” Theopinion of the Texas Superstar®

to cooler regions. It grows best in fullsun and in a location that drains well—loves the heat, and is so tough thateven the Texas Department ofTransportation plants it on highwaymedians.

The old Vitex had small spikes offlowers that were pale lilac, mauve, off–white or light pink. The bloomswere small and unimpressive. The

Board would caution persons in thesefavorable environments aboutpotential weediness. Vitex can besafely used as an ornamental in allparts of the state that do not fit thisdescription.
