Congratulations John Klee-LO Marching Band

Lake Orion High School senior, John Klee performed with the US Army All-American Marching Band, a band made up of 125 Senior marching band students from all across the country. To be chosen, students had to create several audition videos of themselves playing, marching, and speaking about why they should be chosen. There were over 6,000 auditions submitted for the 125 spots.

Those students who were chosen were flown to San Antonio and spent a week rehearsing, studying with top Army Musicians and top educators from across the country, and becoming a band. HIGH SCHOOL SPOTLIGHTS

Congratulations: 2017 Dragon Yearbook

Good News to share - the 2017 Dragon Yearbook won a Spartan! The Spartan Award is the highest in the State of Michigan and awarded to only the top year-books in the state.

With 905 points out of 1,000 , the judge had a great deal of praise. Summary of many of the judges comments are below:

The readers can easily view and reference all items in this book. Special commendation for this effort and planning! Overall the Dragons editors and staff have produced a very enjoyable book. The use of alternative coverage and copy throughout it entertaining. Kudos to the reporters for obtaining such detailed quotes, especially on the theme pages.

Design/Graphics/typography: Treatment of text areas is visually pleasing. Love the mix of color to create separations and make elements pop off the page. Good consistency with front use throughout.

Photography: Superb job with lighting on all the 1/2 faces in the book. Nice consistency to really make this concept work. Photo credits are easy to find and evident throughout. Cropping is fantastic! Group shots are easy to view and have recognizable faces.

Writing: Kudos to your reporters for obtaining awesome quotes on the dividers and secondary coverage areas that use this concept. Your capture the “little moments” of the year in a wonderful way. Love those headlines that are clever without being cliché...page 132 “getting it write.”

People Coverage: Nice job sticking to the secondary coverage established in the previous sections. Love the use of student quotes as an alternative to stories.

World Language News What you need to know about the World Language Requirement

According to the Michigan Merit Curriculum, students must complete two credits of the same World Language. Lake Orion students receive high school credit for language courses taken at Oakview, Scripps, and Waldon. Students have the opportunity to begin or continue French, Spanish and/or German here at LOHS.

In September 2014, a modification to the World Language requirement was passed. Students may now fulfill the requirement in one of three ways:

- Option 1: Two credits (or the equivalent) of high school World Language (same language)

- Option 2: One credit (or the equivalent) of high school World Language and 1 CTE Program or Curriculum (Example: Computer Applications, Computer Programming 1, Computer Programming 2 AND Computer Computer Programming Languages)

- Option 3: Once credit (or the equivalent) of high school World Language and 1 additional credit (Michigan Merit already requires 1 credit) of Visual, Performing or Applied Arts.

As students plan their course schedules, we strongly encourage students to take their language courses consecutively. We also encourage students to contact the colleges and universities they hope to attend to see if they require World Language for college admission. In Michigan, Grand Valley State, Michigan State, and the University of Michigan re-quire two years of the same World Language for admission. Many colleges and programs also require World Language for graduation. Some Lake Orion students have earned college credit on placement exams because of their high school classes.

REAL TALK 2018 Dear Community Member: Please join us as an Adult Facilitator at ONE our upcoming REAK TALK sessions on TUESDAY February 27th and THURSDAY, March 1st or FRIDAY, March 2nd. REAL TALK is a powerful, high-energy program in which youth and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning processes. The overall goals of the program are to increase personal power and self-esteem, to shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support and to eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence and all forms of oppression. The REAL TALK Program is designed to unite the students of Lake Orion High School and members of our community and to empower them to carry the themes of the program back to the school population. REAL TALK will also successfully address issues of violence, teasing, social oppression, racism, harassment, conflict management, suicide, peer pressure, alcohol and drugs. We encourage adults to volunteer as positive role models for the benefit of the youth. The program welcomes parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, police officers, elected officials, community members and any other interested adults. This allows youth to see another side of these adults in addition to their assigned community roles. Please notify Michele Novak If you would like to become an adult facilitator for the REAL TALK sessions [email protected] 248-693-5638. Adult Facilitators are crucial for the success of the day. We will meet with all Facilitators at 7:15am on the day you have signed up to volunteer to inform you of what is needed from you and to answer your questions. In order for the pre-program meeting to begin on time, please arrive NO LATER THAN 7:15am. No prior training is necessary other than the morning check-in meeting. Our REAL TALK staff will give you all instructions you will need throughout the day. You must be able to remain on site and participate fully for the entire program, including 30 minutes after the program at the end of the day for a post-REAL TALK debriefing. You will be done NO LATER than 3:00pm. We hope you will be able to join us for this wonderful experience! Location: CERC Building, 455 E. Scripps Road Time: 7:15am to 3:00pm Date: ONE of the three dates: February 27th, March 1st, March 2nd. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN ADULT FACILITATOR, PLEASE FILL OUT THE ADULT FACILITATOR FORM AND THE FIELD TRIP VOLUNTEERS AND CHAPERONES CRIMINAL CONVICITON HISTORY FORM

REAL TALK Adult Facilitator Points to Remember

1. Adult Participant meetings. We will meet with Adult facilitators 30 minutes prior to and immediately following the program. In order to begin the morning meeting on time, please arrive NO LATER than 7:15am on the scheduled date that you have signed up for. 2. Stay all day. Please be prepared to arrive fully committed to the students and know that you have agreed to participate the entire day (3:00pm) and that you will not be available for other commitments, including short errands. 3. Be positive. Please model the positive behavior that we are looking for from the students. Remember your energy and full participation will do much to affect attitudes and activities for the day. 4. Notice “lost participants.” Throughout the day, look for those participants who are disconnected, resistant, or in any way unable to fully participate and then gently include them. Keep us informed if you notice someone who may need additional support or attention. 5. Sharing groups. Sharing groups allow for deeper levels of sharing and help us identify youth who may need support following the program. Your role will be to include everyone and to be sure that no one is left out. Participants should sit physically close to increase support and attention. Facilitators should monitor each group member’s attendance. 6. Listen. o When one person is speaking, give full attention and eye contact o Value the speaker, hearing his/her message, and accepting his/her feelings o Do not judge or evaluate the speaker o Give non-verbal encouragement o Let go of the need to construct answers while the other person is speaking 7. Go with the flow. Avoid taking over the group. Support the participants in experiencing their personal power by modeling full participation. 8. Be open. Let go of expectations and preconceived ideas of what the day could or should be. 9. Confidentiality. We will cover confidentiality and reporting laws, as well as norms for the day in our opening statements. While confidentiality is important to us, the safety of teen participants is our top priority. At times participants will identify situations that may threaten their safety or the safety of others. If this should occur, listen and get as much information as possible. Be calm and, at the appropriate time, notify the adults in charge at end of the day. That is why we have the debriefing/end of day meeting after the students leave. 10. Trust the group process. Please know that many of the topics and activities covered often elicit feelings and that at times things may seem intense. Trust yourself and trust the group. 11. Tears are healing. Be present. Allow participants to have a safe place to express whatever feelings come up. Give participants space for their feelings. 12. Have fun. Often as adults we forget to play and have fun! Our role modeling is very important, so play and allow yourself to feel. This day is for you, too! LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE TO THE ADULT FACILITATORS AND TEENS!
