NO TAX ASSISTANCE THIS YEAR . . . As many of you are already aware, free income tax preparation services will not be offered this year in Caldwell County. AARP TaxAide relies on volunteers to work the site and were unable to recruit enough volunteers. This service has helped many people in the past, and we would like to see it provided next year. They need volunteers interested in making a commitment to go to training and prepare taxes. If you are interested in volunteering to give back to the community, please contact Glenda Pierce at 336-466-3184.

There is a telephone scam going on at this time where the caller is taking a survey and identifying themselves

PROGRAMS FOOT CARE PROGRAM Feb. 11th at 3:00pm Do you suffer from corns, bunions, calluses, pain or thick nails? Mike Kilby and Kizzy Dixon with UNC Health Care’s Caldwell Wound Clinic will be at the Senior Center to give this FREE program. They will do a presentation on Feb. 11th and make appointments (only for those attending) to come back on Feb. 18th for a foot assessment. Please call 758-2883 to register.

CELL PHONE HELP SESSIONS Representatives from Carolina West/Bark Mobile will be at the senior center for these FREE help sessions. Bring your phone and questions to the appropriate session. Smartphone Session—Feb. 14th at 1:00pm iPhone Session—Feb. 14th at 2:00pm A follow-up session will be held on Feb. 21st (smartphone at 1:00 and iPhone at 2:00) for those who attend a session on the 14th. ADVANCED CARE PLANNING WORKSHOP Feb. 13th & Mar. 12th at the Senior Center at 1:30pm. Feb. 27th & Mar. 26th at Robbins Center in Hudson. Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care will host these FREE workshops on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays. If you need a living will or healthcare power of attorney, please sign up. A local attorney will facilitate them at no cost. Call 758-2883 to register.

PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION PROGRAM Feb. 21st from 10:00-11:00 AM Brittany Kanupp with the Caldwell Co. Tax Office will be at the senior center to talk about property tax exemptions. Register today for this informative program at 758-2883.

QUALIFYING FOR MEDICAID FOR LONG-TERM CARE Feb. 28th at 10:00 AM With the cost of long-term care at $6,000 per month in NC, most people can’t afford this expense and need Medicaid benefits to help. Local attorney, Angela Clark, will be at the senior center to explain the requirements to qualify for Medicaid and share some options available to protect your assets by planning ahead. Call 758-2883 to register.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE OPEN ENROLLMENT Jan. 1st—March 31st Those with advantage plans may make changes until March 31st. Please call 758-2883 to schedule an appointment.

SENIOR FUN WALK—Mark your calendar for May 8th at 9:00 AM! The 2020 Unifour Senior Games will begin registration on Jan. 20th — Mar. 2nd. The senior center will sponsor the annual Senior Fun Walk on May 8th at the Broyhill Walking Park at 9:00 AM. Join us to walk a mile at your own pace. Light refreshments will be available.

16th ANNUAL CHARITY CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT—Save the date! Saturday, April 18th, 2020 at Lenoir Golf Club Organizers of the Charity Classic have designated the proceeds of this golf tournament to benefit the Caldwell Senior Center! The entry fee is $50 per person and includes lunch, golf cart, prizes and more. The format is Four (4) person Captain’s Choice. ROOTED & ROCKIN’ Tuesdays at 1:30pm Chair aerobics—great for those who have difficulty standing for periods of time. (45 min.) April Austin leads the three exercise classes.

YOGA/QIGONG Wednesdays at 8:00am Simple and highly effective practice combining Qigong and Yoga. Enjoy therapeutic movements, breathing techniques and learn to harness energy. Leave feeling bright, energized and balanced. Taught by Ellen Crider, Yoga Therapist (E-RYT500). Free will offering accepted. (1 hour)

WHAT TO DO?

ADULT COLORING CLUB 4th Monday of each month, 3:00-4:30pm Bring colored pencils and enjoy a structured time of stress-free coloring. Coloring sheets are provided.

BILLIARDS Mon.—Fri., 9:00am-5:00pm A pool table is ready for you to play with old friends or make new ones.

PUZZLE TABLE Mon.—Fri., 9:00am—5:00pm A table is ready with a picture jigsaw puzzle for your enjoyment in the lobby.

MAH JONGG 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, 1:00-4:00pm New players are welcome to come and learn!

CRIBBAGE Wednesdays, 1:00-3:00pm Come learn to play this great card game!

SENIOR FUN AND FRIENDSHIP CLUB Thursdays, 9:30am-1:00pm This group meets for socializing at 9:00am and card games begin at 9:30. Games include Bridge and Hand & Foot, or you can start a new game. Bring light refreshments to share. Club dues are $15/year. If you are wanting to join the group, please call 758-2883 before attending.

EUCHRE Thursdays, 1:00pm A social card game with 3 or more players. Come learn if you don’t know how!

KNITTING AND CROCHETING Mondays, 9:30-11:30am Experienced and new yarn crafters are welcome.

OIL PAINTING Mondays, 10:00am-12:00 noon Classes are taught by Marilyn Gragg for a fee of $20/month. Limit 12 people for the class. Please call the senior center for a supply list.

CALDWELL SENIOR SONGBIRDS Tuesdays at 9:30am They meet to practice then travel to area nursing homes to entertain the residents. If you enjoy singing in a group, come join them! (They do not meet on the 5th Tuesdays.)

SENIOR CRAFTERS Tuesdays, 10:00am-12:00 noon Crafters teach and learn from each other. New crafters are welcome! CRAFT CLASS 2nd Friday of the month, 2:00-4:00pm Senior Crafters offer this afternoon class for you to create unique craft items.

WOOD CARVING Wednesdays, 1:00-3:00pm Bring your tools and projects to work on. New and experienced wood carvers are welcome.

LAP QUILTING AND NEEDLEWORK Thursdays, 1:30-3:30pm A drawing is held each month for a fabric prize (such as a fat quarter). Jeanne Enloe is the instructor. There is a monthly fee of $20. We encourage you to complete our quilting interest survey as we are considering a class reconstruction. Surveys are available at the senior center during the first 2 weeks of February.

They are the leading volunteer organization dedicated to helping those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease & related memory disorders. This program will explore lifestyle habits we can adopt to help maintain or even potentially improve our health & delay the onset of cognitive decline. Please call 758-2883 to register.

CENSUS EDUCATION PROGRAM Mar. 27th from 10:00-11:00 AM The senior center will provide a FREE program to explain why it is important to participate, what to expect, how to distinguish between a scam artist and legitimate Census worker, completing the paperwork, etc. Computers are available (M-F, 8am-5pm) for you to complete your paperwork online. FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS & ONLINE BANKING SAFETY March 6th from 1:00-2:00 PM Truist financial will be at the senior center to present their FREE financial foundations program as well as a online banking safety seminar. SERVICES S.H.I.I.P. (SENIORS HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION PROGRAM) Volunteers & Senior Center Staff Staff and volunteers are trained by the S.H.I.I.P. division of the NC Department of Insurance to answer questions about Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Prescription Drug coverage, Medicare Supplement policies and Long Term Care Insurance. LEGAL ASSISTANCE Legal Aid of North Carolina Morganton Office Staff from Legal Aid of N. C. Morganton Office comes one or two times a year (as long as annual funding lasts) to make simple wills for persons over age 60. An appointment is necessary and a waiting list is maintained. Legal services for civil matters are provided by the Morganton office for seniors who qualify financially. Call us for information 758-2883. TRANSPORTATION Transportation is provided by Greenway Transit. Call 464-9444 by noon three days before the requested date to schedule a ride. After the message, a customer service agent will come on the line. NOTARY SERVICE Senior Center Staff We notarize documents such as Living Wills by appointment only. SENIOR TAR HEEL CARDS If you are over 60 and a Caldwell Co. resident, these cards may be picked up at the senior center. They are good for free entry or a discount to county school sporting events at schools that honor them. One card per person may be obtained. Please bring an ID with you. SENIOR MEAL SITES There are four congregate meal sites in the County: Koinonia and Martin Luther King Recreation Center in Lenoir and Kings Creek Baptist Church. Nutrition Services Director for Blue Ridge Community Action is Mary Wright, who may be reached at 828-438-6255 Ext. 0, for more information. MOBILE FOOD PANTRY The Senior Center is now a site on the 4th Monday of each month at 1:30pm for the Yokefellow Food Pantry. Please register at 758-2883. COMPUTER/INTERNET Computers are available for your use Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm. BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS Adrian Kincaid, Volunteer RN A volunteer will be at the Senior Center on the 3rd Friday of each month from 9:15-10:00am to check blood pressures. VOTER REGISTRATION SITE The Senior Center is open Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm for you to register. BETTER BREATHERS CLUB This is a support group for those with chronic lung disease and their caregivers. It meets on the 3rd Friday of each month (11:00am) at the Senior Center and is facilitated by volunteers with the American Lung Association.

The Satie and J. E. Broyhill Caldwell Senior Center is open to all Caldwell County residents age 60 and better and their spouses. A full schedule of activities is offered five days a week. There are no membership fees, but donations are accepted to support the programs. For more information about any of the activities, classes or programs, give us a call at 758-2883.
