AN ISRAELI LoVE SToRyWritten & Directed by: Pnina GaryStarring: Adi Bielskifrom the Hani Theatre in Israel

“authentic and direct theatre, moving, and very touching ... a not-to-be-missed experience.” - ben ami Feingold, Makor rishon

It begins in the summer of 1942 through a chance meeting at a bus stop between Margalit, young and vibrant, and ami, an idealistic Kibbutz pioneer and soldier in the “Palmach” (the unoffi cial army pre-state Israel). Despite the many hardships and dangers of those times, their relationship develops. This innocently told love story is intricately interwoven with the values and problems of an era gone by and vividly captures the characters and atmosphere of pre-state Israel.

  • ASAF AVIDAN Solo Acoustic Performance The remarkable Israeli singer-songwriter and musician performs material from his solo debut album, “Different Pulses,” along with highlights from his body of work with asaf avidan & The Mojos. While asaf avidan has drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin, Jeff buckley and Nina Simone, he possesses a voice that is utterly singular. as London’s The Independent recently put it, “If you haven’t heard avidan’s music, prepare to be astounded.”

avidan shot to worldwide fame when his track “One Day / reckoning Song,” performed with his band, asaf avidan & The Mojos, hit number one in 14 countries as a remix by berlin DJ, Wankelmut. avidan has filled prestigious 5000-seat venues such as Olympia and Zenith, and played to crowds of 250,000 in european festivals.

TALkINg DANCINga conversation on Israeli Contemporary Dance with choreographers NIV SHEINfELD and OREN LAOR

This moderated conversation with the artists and Dancemakers artistic Director, Michael Trent, closes the gap between what we say to the public and what we say to each other. Opening a window onto the Israeli contemporary dance scene of today, the artists will provide an insider’s look at the issues and trends informing this ever-changing and dynamic ecology. The audience will be invited to join the conversation.

To provide a personal context into the subject matter, Sheinfeld and Laor will present a showcase performance of Two room apartment, an award-winning re-enactment of a 1987 work considered a milestone in the development of independent Israeli choreography.

a lovely fable that will appeal to cinema lovers of all ages. In the aftermath of his parents’ divorce, 11-year-old Igor relishes visits with his father, an ornithologist in the russian countryside. When his mother announces they are moving to Israel to start a new life, Igor’s world is turned upside-down. Struggling to adjust to his new Israeli school, he finds solace in tracking the migration of a flock of cranes from eastern europe to africa. In this feature debut, young Israeli-russian filmmaker evgeny ruman (Lenin in October, TJFF 2010) proves dexterous at mixing light humour with a truly heartwarming story.

hARISSA, hoNEy & hySSoP:Photos of North African Food by Nelli Sheffer In Israel, where nearly half of the Jewish population is of Sephardi or Mizrahi ancestry, the infiltration of North african foods into the multi-cultural cuisine has been overwhelming. Nelli Sheffer, Israel’s top food photographer, documents foods and food makers for cookbooks, geographical and travel periodicals. This exhibition brings together a collection from Sheffer’s multiple journeys to North africa, in search of the foods that have become an integral part of contemporary Israeli cuisine. Sheffer’s camera captures far beyond the visual aspect of amazing dishes: when you look at his captivating works you can sense aromas and tastes.

SIgALIT LANDAU: Moving to Stand Still

Sigalit Landau: Moving to Stand Still, at the new Koffler Gallery (artscape youngplace), will feature a retrospective of Landau’s major video works that offer a poetic investigation with global resonance of the political and environmental realities of her native country. The notion of endless movement across territories, along with the persistent wound of a traumatic history and a disputed present, are the recurrent themes of Landau’s six performative video works included in the exhibition. Landau represented Israel at the 2011 Venice biennale. The exhibition is the only North american presentation of an international tour that includes Moscow, Johannesburg, beer-Sheva, rome, Gdansk, and Tromso and the first time a selection of Landau’s major video performance works has been shown in Canada.
