February is Black History Month, and North Chicago Public Library will be honoring African American history and culture with several
events. For the adults, we will be showing several popular documentaries, such as The Black Power
Mixtape which focuses on the civil rights struggle from 1967 to 1975, I Am Not Your Negro which
focuses on the life and philosophy of James Baldwin, and finally Blues Story, which documents the history of blues in the United
States. Teens who attend the screening of I Am
Not Your Negro are encouraged to pick up a copy
of Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time, which will be
discussed in a teen book club to be scheduled for
March. In addition to documentaries, for our adult book club we will be reading Colson Whitehead’s popular new novel The Nickel Boys
which centers around teenaged boys who attend The Nickel Academy, a reformatory school in the
1960’s,
1960’s, and their struggle to survive in their
harsh environment while trying to adhere to their ideals and come to terms with the world
around them.
For children, the Friends of North Chicago Public Library will be putting on their
annual Black History Month program on Saturday, February 8th, with further details to
be announced. We will also be hosting a bilingual story time presented by Sadari and
Company that focuses on African travel.
Our final big event will feature a live blues act and is tentatively set to take place on
February, Saturday the 22nd at 1:00PM. This date and time is subject to change, so please
follow our events on our Facebook page and website calendar to make sure you don’t miss it.
