PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (Cont’d)

7th February 2019 Term 1, Issue 01

Congratulations and Well Done to Elizabeth (Year 5) There is no greater gift in life than when a child achieves or accomplishes something extraordinary. Over the holidays I received the following email from Ning who informed me of what Elizabeth accomplished: Dear Mr. Catalano, I am writing this email to tell you what happened while we were on holiday in Wilsons Prom over Christmas time. Elizabeth was very calm and helped to save few peoples’ lives. We are so proud of her as our daughter and I am sure you would be proud of her as well as a student in your school. On the 27th of December, our family went to Squeaky Beach. We arrived just before 10 o' clock and we were planning to leave at 3 o'clock. At about 2:40 p.m. while Serena was playing with the sand with her cousin. Elizabeth was playing in the water with her boogie board and my husband. Suddenly a big wave came and swept away her school hat which she has been wearing it for the whole period of our holiday. She was a little bit upset as she lost her favourite hat which she had it for few years and we told her to leave early as she didn't have a hat to wear.

While we started to walk back towards to our tent we saw a group of youngsters were standing on the beach and watching a young guy calling for help. Initially we were thinking they were just playing. But after watching him for few seconds as the waves were getting bigger and he was struggling to come back, we realised this situation became really serious. A few people took a swimming ring to rescue him but as the waves were getting heavier all of them struggled to come back. At this time a lady came to Elizabeth and took her boogie board. She rushed to the water with Elizabeth’s board and managed to reach a lady in the water. But the rest of group who had the ring were still struggling to come to close to the beach. At this time Elizabeth was very calm and quickly ran to a family with a surfboard who were walking towards to us ask for help. The son who was holding the surfboard ran into the water straight away and the father grabbed a surfboard from the beach rushed into the water as well. Not long after two of them went into the water, the lady came back with another lady and returned the boogie board to Elizabeth. They were very grateful that Elizabeth 's board help the lady to save her sister' s life who went to help to rescue that guy. By then the son and the father have reached the group people and gradually brought them back. What a relief it was to see them all came back to the beach safely. Then we just left quietly. As we were walking back I was comforting Elizabeth that there was no need to be upset about her hat. I told her it was only a hat and I can buy her a new one, but we can't buy people 's lives and what a great job she has done. I have also reminded her that she should remember to play safely all the time. I thought I should share this story with you.

Elizabeth shared what occurred on the first day of school as we held a welcome back assembly, naturally she received a thundering applause from everyone and, as a token of our school’s appreciation and admiration of what occurred, our school replaced her hat. Well done and congratulations Elizabeth, mum is correct, I am incredibly proud of you as I’m sure everyone in our school community is too!!

Facilities Update The school holidays are the ideal time for tasks to be completed throughout our school as the contractors can work uninterrupted. These holidays the following tasks were completed:

New classrooms – we were very fortunate to receive another portable classroom from the Department which houses 3E and 4D and

STEAM/AI teaching space – the tradespeople completed some of the groundwork for this to occur. At this stage we are expected this new facility to be installed before the end of this month.

School Assemblies A reminder that our whole school assemblies will take place in the gymnasium every Monday morning from 9:05a.m. to approximately 9:45 am. As with all school events, parents and family members are most welcome to attend. School Crossings, Car Parking and Turning Circle School Crossings: Our school is fortunate to have Crossing Supervisors on Springvale Road and High Street Road. It is imperative that we ensure everyone utilises the school crossings correctly particularly adults as we need to set the correct example. Car parking around our school: Parking in and around schools is an issue in every context, however we are very fortunate that the Mountain View Hotel allow us to use their substantive car park both before and after school. I strongly encourage parents to utilise this however refrain from parking near the bottle shop area as this impedes their business. Parking in residential streets: Please be conscious of the signs in all of the “side streets” as bylaws officers frequently visit during pick up and drop off times. Please pay particular attention to the No Standing/No Parking areas. Turning Circle Our turning circle is a fabulous means for families to drop off and pick up the children. Please ensure you move to the front of the queue when the children alight or enter the vehicle as it is extremely dangerous if the children were to cross in front and behind other vehicles. When queuing in Kennedy, Fairhills and Brent Streets, please DO NOT leave the vehicle as this will be deemed as stopped/parked and you will be fined. Of most importance is NOT to turn your car’s engine off if you are in line as this will be deemed as you have parked your car and you will also be fined. If you are in traffic and are lining up to collect your child(ren), I suggest you leave your engine running. Also a reminder that all surrounding streets are 40 km per hour from 8:00 – 9:30 and also 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. If you have any queries with any of the above please do not hesitate to see me. Individual Book Supplies and School Accounts I am extremely pleased to report that the vast majority of families have now settled their fees and have collected book supplies. Thank you to everyone for your support and for ensuring that we have had a very smooth start with the children being well resourced and ready to go! As mentioned previously, the family contributions are a vital component of the school’s ability to provide resources for us to implement the best possible education for all of the children. Please be aware that if you are yet to settle your school account and need some assistance, do not hesitate to see me. Extra-Curricular Programs As everyone would be aware, at our school we have a magnitude of extra-curricular programs and activities in order to provide the children with additional learning opportunities. An overview of these and permission notices were distributed via Compass earlier in the week and if you have any queries regarding any of our extra-curricular programs please do not hesitate to contact the nominated person, Jenny, Kylie or Janet in the office or Mr Welsh.

Classroom Fruit Program (Brain Food) As adults we acknowledge the importance of eating fresh fruit and vegetables on a daily basis and also the significant role they undertake in growing bodies – particularly when learning is occurring at the same time. As a result our school provides a small bowl of fruit to all classrooms on Monday morning however this is not sufficient for every child to have a piece every day. At 10 o’clock the children will stop and have a piece of fruit in order to replenish their vitamins and minerals and we would appreciate it if families could support this by ensuring their child brings a piece of fruit or cut-up vegetables, such as carrot sticks or celery, to school every day. If you have any questions about Brain Food please do not hesitate to see your child’s teacher, Mrs Tomecek, Mr Lewis or myself.

Before and After School Care A reminder to all families that our school provides a Before and After School Care Program for those who require such a service. The Before School program operates from 6:45 to 8:45 and after school from 3:30 to 6:30. Prep children will commence when they are released at 1 p.m. however it is imperative that they are booked in. Our program is run by Camp Australia and all the relevant information is located on our school website at www.glenps.vic.edu.au

Principal Awards As Principal I ensure that I am involved in the learning process as much as possible and as such strongly encourage all students to share their learning with me. Welcome back to school! Each new year brings a sense of renewal and excitement for what may lie ahead. We like to think

about ways to set ourselves and our students up for success at Glen Waverley Primary School. With this in mind, I thought

I’d share this article from the Parenting Ideas website, written by Michael Grose. Michael’s passion for teaching, his

understanding of the educational and parenting landscapes as well as his engaging communication style means has held a

respected profile in the media spanning many years. He’s had parenting segments on The Project, The Today Show,

Weekend Sunrise, 3AW, ABC radio and more. He has contributed to Huff Post, Kidspot and Mamma Mia, and is a former

columnist with News Ltd and Fairfax newspapers. I hope some of these wonderful ideas help set your children up for as

successful 2019.

Top five parenting tips for this year By Michael Grose

The start of the year is a great time for making changes and improvements to the way you raise kids. The trouble is, our good

intentions towards change often become derailed around March, and we return to our default mode of parenting. So

nothing much changes from year to year.

At Parenting Ideas, we have selected the five tips that we think will have the most positive impact on kids this year.

1. Switch on your kids’ strengths

Most of us have been conditioned to focus on what kids can’t do. It’s not your fault. You were trained by teachers and

parents who were adept at picking up your poor behaviours, highlighting errors and encouraging you to eliminate your

faults.

There is a better way. The Positive Psychology movement lead by US-based psychologist Dr. Martin Seligman showed that

when we can unearth kids’ strengths we are, in effect, unlocking their true potential for success and happiness. Three

elements come together to make a strength, and parents need to be mindful of all three: performance (being good at

something); energy (feeling good doing it); and high use (choosing to do it). Rather than locking on to your child’s

weaknesses, set your antennae to your child’s strengths.

Professor Lea Waters, author of the wonderful new book The Strength Switch and current President of the International

Positive Psychology Association will conduct a webinar ‘Switching on your child’s strengths‘.

2. Balance kids’ extra-curricular activities

Alongside social media and news events, being busy is now recognised as a major stress for many children and young people.

Over-scheduling kids’ lives is a relatively new phenomenon. Go back a couple of generations and a few sports, music lessons

and things like scouting movements were the mainstays of after school life for most kids. Now the choice of activities to keep

kids busy after school hours is mind-boggling.

Having so many options is wonderful but it does place a new set of pressures on parents. Many complain that family life is

like now living in a hamster wheel, always in constant motion, with hardly a time to catch their breath. The cost of loading

kids up with scheduled activities is that many don’t get the chance for free play, or simply ‘vegging out’ on the couch. The

benefits of all this activity in terms of kids’ skill development, personal growth and broadening social horizons is well-

founded. However finding a balance is tricky as every child, like every family is different. Parenting Ideas expert Dr.Jodi

Richardson will help you find the right balance of activity for your family in her webinar ‘Balancing extra-curricular activities‘.

GETTING OFF TO A GREAT START IN 2019

Page 8: February - Glen Waverley Primary School · Maths Innovation: Kathy Williams Multimedia and Digital Learning: Sam Laffy and Lissie Shaw Science Technology Engineering Art and Maths

7th February 2019 Term 1, Issue 01

3. Focus on friendships Friendships are an important part of the road to adulthood for a child or young person. With families shrinking in size peer relationships are now fundamental in providing kids with a sense of belonging, a place to hone their identity and a group upon which they can develop their future relationship skills such as tolerance, empathy and forgiveness. Friendships can be problematic. Not every child is naturally outgoing and makes friends easily. If your child is like this, but generally seems happy, then there may be no need to do anything. If your child has difficulty forming friendships and is worried by that, then there are many ways to approach this including: encouraging kids to spend one-on-one time with others, making extra-curricular activities fit their interests, and coaching kids to develop friendly behaviours. The wonderful Sharon Witt will conduct a webinar ‘Teach girls to build each other up‘, focusing on friendship skills especially for parents of girls.

4. Give kids tools to manage anxious moments Let’s just say it upfront. We don’t have a childhood resilience problem as many teachers and professionals say, but we do have a childhood anxiety problem. A big one! And it’s mostly undetected as community understanding of anxiety is low. It’s our experience at Parenting Ideas that many parents are anxious and they don’t know it, and many children routinely experience anxiety, which goes unrecognised. Everyone feels worried from time to time, but these feelings pass when the stressful situation has passed. Anxiety occurs when these anxious feelings don’t pass, and happen for no obvious reason. It’s a serious condition that can be managed and minimised with their right tools. Parenting Ideas founder Michael Grose is conducting a webinar ‘Managing your child’s anxiety‘ to help parents on this challenging but important topic.

5. Develop rights of passage Why are young people, like moths drawn to a flame, attracted to that annual end of school year beach and booze fest known as schoolies? Why do young people who for the best part of a year put their future self first and study hard to achieve best possible school results, put themselves at risk for a solitary week? It’s more than letting their hair down. In the absence of adult-initiated rights of passage young people will always fill the void and create their own. For many young people schoolies is the right of passage. As a community we’ve struggled for many years to create meaningful rights of passage for young people. Once a young person’s first job, or their twenty-first birthday were significant markers of maturity, offering a sense that they were entering into the adult world. Community changes have largely eradicated these traditional markers, which make it harder for a young person to know when they’ve become an adult. There are many healthy ways to recognise a young person’s growing maturity and mark his or her journey into adulthood. Many families are now creating their own rituals to mark key events such as the end of primary school, the start of the teenage years or various stages of adolescence. These traditions are now becoming legitimate rights of passage for young people. Internationally recognised expert on rites of passage Arne Rubenstein will be conducting a webinar ‘Creating 21st century rites of passage‘.

Will anything be different this year? Change and improvement in anything worthwhile generally comes incrementally rather than in one giant leap. We pointed you in the direction that we feel is important for you and your kids to take kids this year. It’s you who has to implement changes and do the work. Through our webinars we’ve made it easy to take that vital first step to better outcomes for kids. Have a great parenting year.

CIS Update

What is the CIS and what does it do for our school?

GWPS has a strong reputation as a high performing school which is supported by our status as a member of the Council of

International Schools (CIS). As a member of the CIS we are provided with the opportunity to work collaboratively with other

schools to improve our educational service and learning outcomes for children. To remain a member of the CIS we are required

to periodically move through a review process which requires us to reflect on every aspect of our school, right through from

administration services to teaching and learning practices. Understandably, this constant reflection on how we can improve our

school consistently drives us forward and ensures that we remain a high performing school.

In addition to endorsing consistent school improvement, the CIS also promotes the development of “Global Citizens”. A Global

Citizen is someone who strives to improve the world, to make it a better place for everyone to share. This can include a school or

community, or even at an international level. Examples of students acting as Global Citizens can range from turning off the light

when leaving the room to save electricity, raising money for a charity to improve the lives of others or even simply saying

“Please” and “Thank-you” to respect and acknowledge the work of others.

In the coming week, we will school appoint two new CIS student leaders who will have the opportunity to lead the learning

pertaining to the concept of Global Citizens across the school. It is with great excitement we look forward to the appointment of

these two captains and the next chapter of our CIS journey.

Extra - Curricular Program Update I am extremely pleased to report that our school’s Extra - Curricular Programs have been advertised (through Compass) and are

now up and running! This term will feature many of the highly successful programs from previous years and our school will be

running a variety of programs facilitated by the teachers such as the Innovation Programs covering music, math’s and art. Our

highly successful Games Club run by Ms. Wang and the Year 6 students will continue during lunch on Tuesdays, providing

opportunities for social interaction within the context of a range of games. In addition there will be opportunities for students

to be involved in other school run programs such as Chinese Choir, Debating, Short Film making and Writers Club where

students can work on their writing strategies.

Our External Providers include Kelly Sports who offer great sporting sessions including basketball, cricket, soccer and dance

focusing on the essential skills needed to participate successfully in these sports. Kids Unlimited will once again be offering

programs such as science, electrical engineering, coding and chess concentrating on mathematical and science based skill

development. There are many other programs on offer such as Hot Shots Tennis, drawing classes and music programs including

guitar, violin and piano.

Please stay tuned for further information about our Extra-Curricular Program in coming weeks and if you have any queries do

not hesitate to see or contact our office staff or myself.

The “Kids’ Corner” section of our school newsletter provides the opportunity

for the children to showcase their talents or communicate something special

The first Kids Corner stories for this year are from Lithika and Mohamed (Year One) who have written recounts about their summer holidays.

Summer Holidays – Lithika

I went to Canberra in December. First we

went to our friends’ house and then with my

friend I went to the swimming pool. After

that we went to the Dinosaur Museum Park

to play. The next day we went to see the

kangaroos and we played cricket and ate

McDonald’s. The next day we came home.

My cousins from Sri Lanka came to visit us

and they stayed in our house.

We went to see the penguins at Phillip

Island and we also went in the City Circle

tram ride in Melbourne.

The best thing I did over the summer was

ride my bicycle in the park.

Summer Holidays

– Mohamed

During my holidays we went to

Harcourt and we stayed in a

holiday house. I went with my

family and played lots of games.

The holiday house was very huge,

there was a swimming pool,

games room, a small playground

and a shipwreck.

We stayed for 3 days and that

was a great holiday!

7th February 2019 Term 1, Issue 01

Hello Glen Waverley Primary School and welcome to the fist Captain’s Corner for this year! Our names are Caitlyn, Sanulya, Arjun and Shiven and we are the 2019 School Captains. We are all excited to start an amazing year of learning and leadership with everyone.

We would like to start off by welcoming the awesome Preps, new students and new

teachers to our wonderful school. We acknowledge a new start for the new members of the

GWPS learning community, especially the Preps.

There was an extremely long process in becoming a leader, and we all are super proud that

we have the chance to represent our amazing school. We would like to acknowledge all the

students who tried out for leadership positions and didn’t get in. It was a really long

procedure and we are all so grateful for this amazing opportunity and achievement. We are

extremely excited to see how our journey goes.

This year we have our new Foci which are:

Evidence in Learning

Healthy connections

Self-regulation.

In class, we learnt about each of them. Evidence in Learning is when you back up your

learning with clear evidence, and deeper thinking. Healthy Connections is having a good

connection with your peers. This is important since it helps improve the wellbeing in our

school. Self-regulation is being able to bring your thoughts back to your learning after you

were distracted and also challenging yourself when learning.

As Year Sixes, we are particularly excited about the summer inter-school sports! We can

choose from the following sports; Rounders, Danish Rounders, Cricket, T-ball and Softball

which is for girls only.

This term, we also have the opportunity to attend:

Swimming carnival – for Years 4 to 6’s

Intra-school Athletics sports and

District Athletics carnival.

Thank you for making the time to read our first Captain’s Corner and we look forward to

sharing more news in upcoming newsletters!

Australian Government Payments

Financial assistance available to Parents If your family is eligible, you can receive financial assistance to help meet the costs of your child’s education. Visit the link below for further information:- https://www.education.vic.gov.au/parents/services-for-parents/Pages/financial-help-school-items.aspx Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities.

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum. CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to be use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per primary school student is $125.00. The CSEF payment cannot be used towards voluntary school charges, books, stationery, school uniforms, before/after school care, music lessons, or formals/graduations.

How to Apply for CSEF If you applied for the CSEF at Glen Waverley Primary School in 2017/2018, you do not need to complete an application form in 2019, unless there has been a change to your family circumstances; such as a change of custody, change of name, change of concession card number, or new siblings commencing at the school in 2019. Check with the school office if you are unsure. If you are new to our school please print off the CSEF Application Form (or collect one from the School Office), complete it and bring it to the school office together with your Concession Card.

Please access The Department Parent Information Flyer and 2019 CSEF Application Form on line please visit our Website under the following tab :- Parents/Government Payments For further information you may also visit the DET Website

State Schools’ Relief (SSR) Each year State Schools' Relief assists families who are experiencing financial disadvantages with school clothing, shoes and other essential items. SSR has received additional government funding so that it can help more families needing financial assistance. Students starting prep or year 7 in 2019, who meet the CSEF criteria outlined above, are automatically able to get help with uniforms. SSR will provide basic uniform items and/or a voucher for each student who meets the criteria. The uniform items available for prep students will be advised by SSR during Term 1 2019. How to Apply for SSR Parents of Prep 2019 students must apply for CSEF by the closing date before they are eligible to apply for a uniform pack. Once your CSEF Application has been lodged, and funds received by the school, we will send you a SSR Application for completion and return. Please do not contact SSR directly as they cannot accept applications from parents. The applications for Prep 2019 CSEF uniform packs will be submitted by us in Terms 2 and 3 2019. Please note: the 2019 Prep Package will be determined by the SSR Board mid Term 1, 2019. Shortly after this, all schools will be notified.
