February Charity: Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a nationwide program that develops life skills in 3rd to 8th grade girls by teaching an impactful, evidence-based curriculum that promotes emo-tional, physical, and social wellness. GOTR began in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1996 and has since expanded to over 200 councils nationwide in all 50 states, empowering 1.4 million girls and over 10,000 volunteers to date. GOTR Las Vegas has been impact-ing girls here in Clark County since 2011, with over 68 sites and close to 2,500 girls served. Ten sites in Henderson currently serve 297 girls.

GOTR is dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential, is free to boldly pursue her dreams and be inspired to recognize her inner strength and celebrate what makes her one of a kind.

A physical activity-based positive youth development program (PA-PYD), GOTR uses running and other physical activities as a medium for teaching essential life skills and core values. Through the inclusion of movement, the curriculum encourages an inten-tional, productive, and healthy lifestyle. It develops independent thinking, strengthens problem-solving skills and boosts teamwork through learned strategies. The program contains all the social-contextual elements necessary of a PA-PYD framework, including an intentional curriculum, instructor training to ensure fidelity, and a supportive team environment. Each season culminates in a celebratory, non-competitive 5K that high-lights the girls' accomplishments and new-found physical abilities. This year, the GOTR Spring 5K will be held on May 5, 2019 on UNLV's campus.
