We celebrated Jerrys life on Saturday, January 28, and he is the first to be inurned in the new columbarium. Jerry touched the lives of so many of us, and we are glad to have his presence with us when we gather for worship. February is here! This year, all of February falls in the Epiphany season. On Sunday, February 5, we will install the new officers for the Episcopal Church Women at the 10:30 a.m. service. The Last Sunday after the Epiphany will be on February 26. This will be a special day because we will celebrate with our annual Jazz Mass at the 10:30 a.m. service, and hold the Holy Trinity Mardi Gras Party following the service. Our Sunday Forums are underway. In January, we had one called Sorting Things Out: A Discussion on Faith and Gender Identity, and another that addressed the ten ways Anglicans encounter the Virgin Mary. In February, we will host a forum on the new Smart 911 system, and begin a series on prayer and its various forms. I do hope you will join us. Two Vestry items bear mentioning here: first, the vestry welcomes Patty Bridges to fill the opening left by Jerry Sheuerman. In addition, the vestry decided to move its meeting day to the third Wednesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. The next vestry meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15. On Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18, I will attend our diocesan convention with Nancy Holst and Sandra Powers as our delegates, and Linda Monson as our alternate. The opening Eucharist on Friday will be held at Trinity Cathedral, with our Saturday business session to be held at Episcopal Collegiate School. Finally, I hope you will make time to walk the path through the Scatter Garden and around the church. Jerry Sheuerman and Tommy Wachtel built the walkway around the west end of the church to the Barcelona road side of Sifford Hall. From there, our new Grounds Care Team, together with special gifts and vestry support, devised a plan to repair the rest of the walkway and landscape the entire side of the church on Barcelona. While some work remains, most has been completed. They have done a wonderful job, and I invite you to walk the path and enjoy it for yourselves. Peace, Fr. Neil +

February at Holy Trinity

Let me begin by saying that I hope you will read the fine tribute written for Jerry Sheuerman in this issue by our editor, Susan Read. From the Senior Warden: Keeping You Up to Date As your new Senior Warden, I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that 2017 will bring. I especially look forward to working with our new vestry members, Nancy Jorgensen and Gordon Watts, who were affirmed during the annual meeting. Jerry Sheuerman was also affirmed during the meeting, but he died very unexpectedly that evening of a heart attack. Jerry will certainly be missed. He did so much at Holy Trinity on a daily basis. The Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (HTEC) annual meeting was held on January 15, 2017. It was very well attended and I want to thank everyone that came. The brunch was delicious, and I especially want to thank the Kitchen Committee for all their hard work. Fr. Neil presented special notes of appreciation and DeSoto Club gift certificates to our outgoing vestry members, Ron Devish, Linda Monson and Dan Tucker. It would be impossible to calculate the amount of time and work these folks have contributed to HTEC during the three years they have been on the vestry. By affirmation of all those in attendance, Sandra Powers and Nancy Holst will be HTEC’s delegates to the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas annual convention scheduled for February 17-18, 2017 in Little Rock. Linda Monson will be the alternate delegate. During the annual meeting, we heard reports from the senior warden, junior warden and treasurer. Representatives of the Outreach Committee and Episcopal Church Women (ECW) also gave their reports on events that occurred during 2016. Fr. Neil presented his report, briefed the attendees on upcoming events, and then closed the meeting with prayer. After the meeting, the vestry got together to select Clif Haygood as the junior warden, and Clarence Hodgson was selected as vestry clerk. On January 22, 2017, the vestry met in special session to vote on a replacement for Jerry Sheuerman. Patty Bridges was unanimously approved as a member, and her willingness to serve is appreciated very much. A biography and photo will be published soon. Congratulations, Patty, and welcome to the team! All vestry members have attended an orientation on January 26, 2017, to review the vestry handbook and receive liaison task assignments. After that meeting, we are all ready to go to work! God Bless, Nancy Holst

The Rev. Brenda Kroll spoke to the “full house” ECW group in January, describing how God led her to His ministry in the diaconate. Brenda shared experiences from the personal and professional journey that led to her current pastoral, social and liturgical vocation. We are so blessed to have Deacon Brenda among us!

When I was growing up in New England in the 1950s and ‘60s, church bells were located in the old churches that had large steeples. Most had only one large bell operated by a pulled rope. I can still hear that deep, vibrating sound. Then there were those churches that had three or four bells that played different types of melodies. How beautiful and rich the sound was. Nowadays, most churches seeking bells look for a cheaper alternative to those tall steeple kind. Thanks to technology, we can now get that same sound (even better) with electronic church bells called carillons. As you drive around the village, you may have heard church bells being played at Woodlands Presbyterian, All Saints Anglican, Sacred Hearts Catholic, or Faith Lutheran. These churches all have installed carillon systems. Jan Hanna and I have visited these various churches to view their systems and gather research on the five different companies that currently make carillons. Holy Trinity had a carillon system back in the ‘90s that produced bell sounds via tape drive. The tapes finally wore out after years of playing. When the tapes could not be replaced nor the system upgraded, it was taken out. Villagers have mentioned how they used to hear our church bells while playing golf on Cortez golf course. On Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., Mr. Steve Doerger from the Verdin Company will be demonstrating their Adagio electronic carillon system here at Holy Trinity in Sifford Hall. Everyone is welcome to come, listen to the bells, and see how they could be used at Holy Trinity. If you have any questions about carillons, please contact Jan Hanna at 922-6478 or me at 226-5146.

In December, our church was beautifully adorned with traditional seasonal altar frontal and lectern linens. You may have noticed that there were two new dossal hangings in the transepts (to the right and left of the altar) in fabric matching those of the altar, lecterns and clergy stoles. The Altar Guild carefully selected these coordinated items for the Christmas season, and is now looking ahead to buy a blue set for Advent and a white set for Easter and all celebration services (weddings, baptisms, memorials). The sets are ordered through the C. M. Almy & Son Company, who has provided products and apparel for churches and clergy since 1892. The cost of these linens varies based on the material selected and is a significant expense; however, once acquired, they will grace the church for many years to come. Members of the congregation who wish to contribute to the purchase may do so at any time. What a special way to honor an occasion, offer a thanksgiving, or remember a loved one with a memorial. For more information, please contact Juddie Wachtel at 501-425-7945.

May the Lord bless you and

keep you, and give you peace,

now and for evermore. On behalf of the congregation, Carol Henderson (above, right) presented Jane Henderson (above, left ~ no relation, but church family just the same) a set of cross bookends in recognition of Jane’s many contributions to Holy Trinity. Jane is moving to Texas and expressed how much she will miss everyone.

“Team Deville” members Bonnie Samuelson, Betty Haygood, Kate Hager and Carol Dyer led the farewell celebration for Alton and Barbara Dee Deville. The Devilles are moving to Daphne, Alabama, to be closer to their daughter and family.

At left, “Friends of the Schlichtings”, D.K. Edwards, JoAnn Thompson, Tom and Peggy Wachtel, and Kay Tucker organized the reception honoring Bill and Karan Schlichting, who are leaving for their new home in Louisiana.

On January 22, the guest speaker for the Sunday forum was the Rev. Dr. Denise Donnell, Senior Faith Organizer of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Arkansas. Dr. Donnell’s topic was “Sorting Things Out: A Discussion on Faith and Gender Identity”. She was accompanied by Ms. Sheila Johnson, HRC Volunteer. It was an informative session with a valuable discussion exchange.

Henderson State University Annual Student Showcase

Several winners of the Henderson State Dept. of Music annual President’s Concert competition performed selected numbers to a full audience on January 29. Sponsored by the Hot Springs/Hot Springs Village Symphony Guild and hosted by Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, this is always a very popular and enthusiastically received event. Students demonstrated their skills vocally, on the piano, violin, flute and euphonium. Following the concert, a reception for these talented guests was held in the church parish hall.

In Memorium ~ Jerry Sheuerman

On Sunday, January 15, 2016, at the annual meeting of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Jerry Sheuerman was presented as an incoming member of the vestry, a leadership role for which he was very well suited. Just a few hours later, the unthinkable occurred when Jerry’s heart gave out as he was helping the cleanup crew return the parish hall to order. He was surrounded by people who attended to his emergent situation and who loved him through it as best they could. We are stunned by the suddenness of Jerry’s passing, but hold on to the values of faith and commitment set by his example every single day. Jerry Sheuerman was a good man, through and through. We will deeply miss his presence here. He checked things, fixed things, organized things, set things up and moved them around. He really liked to use the leaf blower around the property to whisk fallen leaves out from underfoot. He loved a good cup of coffee and his Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. He dearly loved his wife Marilyn, their children and grandchildren. From his resting place in the sanctuary’s columbarium, he’ll still be with us when we worship. From his resting place in the kingdom of heaven, it seems certain that he was welcomed by the voice of our Lord ~ “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

“O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered, accept our prayers on behalf of the soul of thy servant departed, our brother Jerry. Hold Marilyn and family in thy loving care and give comfort to us who mourn.

Grant Jerry entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of thy saints,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

The Pile of Pennies Have Been Counted!

A special thank you to all who brought in your pennies.

A big blue bucket sits on a table in our narthex for folks to drop their pennies in all year. These funds support the national Episcopal Church Periodical Club’s “Miles of Pennies” program.

So what is the “Miles of Pennies” Fund? The program was developed by the Church Periodical Club (CPC) in 1988 when a CPC board member saw some boys tossing pennies into a street grate as they remarked that pennies aren’t worth anything. The program became “Help pave the road for children’s books” and $304,128 has been collected nationally over the past 20-plus years.

How many pennies equal one mile? 84,480 or $844.80

In December, I took all those pennies from the big blue bucket home to be rolled and counted. An amazing $45.00 was collected for 2016 and will now be sent to CPC Headquarters in New York. In 2015, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church collected $64.00 in pennies. Thank you all!

If you have any questions, please contact me at 501-226-5146.
