Harry Potter fans will recognize this phrase. Pet moving is like chasing the golden snitch all over the world. The rules change, and those changes are hidden in country agriculture websites. If you don’t catch the change quickly, it can lead to unnecessary quarantines and expense. There are NO standard forms NOR is there a standard pet move for all origins and/or destinations. We keep up with a lot of ever-changing regulations. Like you we ship to a lot of countries. 168 at last count. Even so, EVERY pet transport is tailored to the pet owner and the destination country, bearing in mind the origin country. Every pet shipped requires a health certificate based on destination requirements. The U.S. 7001 is only ONE type of health certificate. Brazil has a new multipage and multilingual document As do most of the island countries And, many destinations require the health certificate written in the language of the origin country AND in the language of the destination country.

Story: A EuRa partner in Luxembourg asked our assistance relocating a 21-year-old cat on kidney dialysis from California to Europe on for an executive of an internationally famous online music playlist and radio provider. When the client called, the cat and spouse were scheduled to fly from California to Europe on a private jet in 14 days. We used our streamlined International Health Certificate process and obtained the proper documents working with the client’s family veterinarian.

In general, to qualify for a health certificate to move to another country pets require: Microchip ID insertion. Air Animal strongly recommends inserting a 15-digit ISO chip before traveling to the EU or UK if the animal has a non-ISO chip. Followed by Rabies immunization or proof of immunization given at least 30 days before but not more than one year before entry. Varying with the origin country of the pet shipment, a Rabies antibody test may be required with a mandatory waiting period at the origin prior to entry. Please note: the entry of pets into the EU from the USA only requires a 21-day waiting period prior to EU entry.

Some countries require blood tests for Rabies antibody's (FAVN-OIE) with results greater than 0.5 I.U. Varying with the destination country, the Rabies antibody test is good through the duration of the Rabies immunization; or subsequent Rabies booster vaccinations. Please note: the UK no longer requires the Rabies antibody test for pets entering the UK from the USA or Canada.

For the Rabies blood test, a veterinarian collects a blood sample and sends it to an accredited lab. Kansas State University has such a lab and they run animal blood work from all over the world. The protocol for sending lab work can be found at ksu.edu then search for rabies. Some countries require the pet wait 120 days from the lab’s receipt of the sample before traveling. Several countries may require the accredited lab send the result DIRECTLY to the destination country.

My veterinarian colleagues are excellent animal doctors, experienced in veterinary protocols. However, not every veterinarian knows how to do an international pet health certificate that will gain approval from every country’s pet export regulator. The most challenging are islands and island countries because most do NOT have enzootic Rabies their animal populations Moving a pet to Australia requires a 6-month lead time along with a very specific veterinary protocol. There is a only a 10 day quarantine after arrival in Australia. Sorry! No visiting during quarantine. New Zealand requires a 3-month lead line With 6 month’s preparation, Singapore mandates only 10 days of quarantine. Relocating to Hong Kong requires an import permit along with AVID microchipping. AND all pets must enter Hong Kong as manifest and booked air cargo. Moving a pet dog, cat or ferret to Japan requires a 6-month preparation and 3 hours of quarantine. Moving pets to either Hawaii or Guam requires a Rabies Antibody test, along with a 120- day home stay in the USA before departure.

STORY Annie Anzac is an 11-year-young husky border collie mix. Australian Navy Commodore Menhinick, their youngest child and Annie moved to Tampa, FL in 2012 for the Commodore’s three-year posting at U.S. Central Command. When they had six months remaining on their posting, Mrs. Menhinick started making inquiries regarding Annie Anzac’s transportation home to Australia—a do-it-yourself move. Then Annie failed the initial rabies titer which extended her timeline to export. Air Animal handled this hiccup for the family. It meant Annie had to be in kennels and with friends in Tampa after the family flew home. After her flight to Australia, Annie was so rested from her time in quarantine she spotted some ducks, jumped in a pond and swam off in chase when they stopped on the way to Canberra. This photo was taken after her swim! <WALTER—MORE ON NEXT PAGE> Apart from having a wet smelly dog in the car the Menhinick’s were really pleased that their Annie had come home to them safely. You may be wondering about the bulldog in the picture. The Number 1 question I hear when I speak with relocation specialists and HR managers such as yourselves is “Can you move snub-nosed pets?” It is POSSIBLE to move bulldogs and snub-nosed pets as long as the temperatures at ALL airports along the way are less than 80 degrees Fahrenheit or 26 degrees Celsius. True! Now, this varies with each and every airline and their Live Animal acceptance policy. Lower temperatures allow these brachycephalic breeds to breathe easier and travel more safely. STORY (Ritzy’s) if you have a lot of time remaining: Last summer, a client who used our streamlined pet health certificate service for a “do it yourself” pet move to the Middle East got an upsetting call from United Airlines. They said they could not ship her pet from Egypt to her final destination because she had an English Bulldog and the receiving airport temperature was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. We weren’t moving her pet; we DO believe in client service. We referred our client to one of our very knowledgeable European service partners to see what options she might have.

Delta’s guidance says: “In the best interest of the safety of the animal, we do not allow them as cargo on any Delta or Delta Connection flight. We Fed Ex kennel labels, required forms and other information owners need for the move. We also give tips to owners to make their pet move safely and comfortably. Please note the 6-inch wooden riser adjacent to the dog's head, allowing for an increase in the vertical height of the shipping container to accommodate this Great Dane.
