ACV EVENTS

MEN’S FELLOWSHIP BREAKFAST Saturday, Feb. 8, 8:00 a.m. - Village Café

The Men’s Fellowship will meet on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 8:00 a.m. at the Village Café. Our speaker this month is Rev. Phyllis Doty, a deacon of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Live Oak. Phyllis is a long-time resident at ACV. She will tell us about their recent mission trip to Cuba. St. Luke’s has a sister congregation in Mantanzas, which is about 50 miles outside of Havana. The congregation has been making this annual trip for some time. Please come and join us for this time of inspiration, fellowship, and food. A buffet breakfast will be offered.

MOVIE MATINEE Saturday, Feb. 8, 2:00 p.m. - OPR

Shortly after arriving to help colonize Mars, an astronaut dies while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet: Gardner Elliot, an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, Gardner is eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars. Scientists quickly discover that Gardner’s organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere, so he races against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe. 2017 drama. 120 mins. Rated PG-13 for brief sensuality and language. The Village Church is able to show this movie because it is covered by their CVLI license, which also prohibits the advertisement of the movie’s title and actors’ names.

COLORING BOOK TIME OF FELLOWSHIP Sundays, 2:00 p.m. - DH Lobby

Did you know that men and women gather on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. in the lobby of DH to develop their creativity with colored pencils? In addition to calming music, refreshments are provided. Reservations are not required — all are invited just to come and sit a spell. No fee!

AD VALOREM TAX EXEMPTION SIGN-UP Tuesday, Feb. 11, 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Thurs., Feb. 13, 9:00 a.m.-Noon & 1:00-4:00 p.m. Sawmill Room

RENTAL RESIDENTS ONLY

(Does not include DH, CH or POP)

You may be able to reduce the amount of Ad Valorem taxes you are charged on your rental property by filing for an Ad Valorem Tax Exemption. To file for this exemption, you must sign and have notarized an Affidavit for Ad Valorem Tax Exemption Form. These forms MUST be filled out EVERY year. Even if you filled one out last year, you must fill one out again this year to continue to get your current exemption. Married couples who reside in the same residence are required to provide both signatures — please come when both spouses are available. By signing the affidavit, you will get a $25,000 exemption from the Ad Valorem tax — regardless of income — IF you are not claiming a homestead exemption on any other property for 2020. Please see the Ad Valorem notice recently mailed to you for the list of additional exemptions. These forms and a notary will be available in the SMR Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Thursday, Feb. 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. If you are unable to come on either of these scheduled days, call Kristi Mullen in the Finance Department (658-5450) to make an appointment for any day this month. Finance must have all exemptions filed with Suwannee County by Feb. 29.

It is a tiny act that means much more than people seem to realize. On Fridays, civilians wear an article of red clothing as a reminder to all to Remember Everyone Deployed. By wearing red, we will let our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being. You will feel better all day Friday when you wear RED! COMING SOON: a new adult Christian education elective. Experiencing God by Henry and Richard Blackaby will be a 12-week course facilitated by Paul and Barbara Bertolino. Make plans now to join others on Sunday, Feb. 23, for this exciting new adventure! The Baby Bottle Boomerang fundraiser for our local pregnancy care center is underway. Take a bottle, fill it with coins, cash, or checks, and return it to the church office by Feb. 23. Your participation saves lives! Thank you. The second semester of the VC Bible Institute will begin on Wednesday, March 4, with the class, “Leaders and the Early Church”. Some have also expressed interest in taking the Acts Class in the Institute, which we are willing to do, but we need at least five students to make it possible. If you are interested in signing up for either one of these classes, speak to Michael Saunders ([email protected]) or call the church office. The textbooks cost $75. There is no tuition cost. Please come and join us!

American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month, and each week, we are sharing tips from the American Heart Association on how you can improve your heart health. Last week’s tip was Get Moving, encouraging daily exercise to improve cardiovascular health. Here is this week’s tip:

Tip #2: Improve Your Eating Habits Eating healthy is easier than you might think. Add these simple healthy eating habits to your daily life over the next few weeks, and you’ll see just how easy it is. By making small changes like these over time, and taking them one at a time, the changes are more likely to stick.

Eat more fruits and vegetables. Aim for 4–5 servings each of fruits and vegetables every day, if you consume a 2,000 calorie diet. Vegetable or 100% fruit juice counts toward this goal.

Eat more whole grain foods. Like fruits and vegetables, whole-grain foods are low in saturated fat and cholesterol and rich in fiber. Whole-grain foods include whole-wheat bread, rye bread, brown rice and whole-grain cereal.

Use olive, canola or safflower oil. Limit how much fat or oil you use in cooking, and use liquid vegetable oils such as olive, canola, corn and safflower oils in place of solid fats.

Eat more chicken, fish and beans. In general, skinless poultry, fish and vegetable protein (such as beans) are lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than other meats (beef, pork and lamb).

Read food labels to help you choose healthy foods. Food labels provide information to help you make better food choices. Learn what information to look for (for example, sodium content) and how to find it quickly and easily.

Need help with your healthy menu planning? Eatingwell.com is just one of many websites where you can plan menus and find heart healthy recipes to get you started!

VILLAGE GROCER Tony Harmon–386-658-3130

ACV HOMECARE Kyla Bispham–386-658-5460

Did you know that we offer companionship?

ACV’s Home Care Agency offers a variety of services. Companionship is one of our unique services. A companion provides assistance with regular activities like going for walks; walking a dog; helping with hobbies and crafts; shopping assistance; encouraging and participation in stimulating activities; transportation to scheduled, non-emergency appointments by way of the resident’s vehicle; cooking and planning meals; and helping with correspondence to family and friends. This

is just one of the great services that we have to offer. We would love to provide top quality care for you! Contact our office for more details. We look forward to hearing from you! ACV members will receive these services at a 10% discount. Get started with your companion today; call us at 658-5460.

ACV LIBRARY

Brenda Reas, Reporter

Two large print books by John Grisham have been ordered: The Client and The Street Lawyer. So far, only the former has arrived, but hopefully by the time this is printed, they both will be available for check out. If you are new to ACV, our library is easy to find. We are just down the hall from the IC and across from the Village Cashier. Our hours are 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Next door is the video library with movies on DVD and VHS tape. We look forward to seeing you.

MEMBER SERVICES James Sutter–386-658-5400

We called to verify that the next Hooked on Heroes veterans fishing trip is taking place April 4 and were told that, even though the trip is several months away, they need to know ASAP who is coming because availability is limited, and space is already filling up. So, if you’re interested, please call Member Services (658-5400) so that we can let them know you’re coming. All veterans are invited to take part. There is no cost for the bus trip, all supplies are provided (including the boat and captain), and you get a free lunch. We need reporters! We need a couple of representatives to submit news for Cardinal and Magnolia terraces and River Woods. Would you be willing to help?

A representative with CapTel Captioned Telephones visited ACV Tuesday. During the presentation, she said the form to request a CapTel could be signed by a physician or RN. The Copeland Clinic does not feel comfortable signing these forms, as they do not perform hearing tests. If you are a patient of ACV’s clinic, and you ask them to sign off on the CapTel form, they will refer you to an audiologist to sign the form. I spoke with a representative of Hearing Life (formerly Hearing Solutions), and they work with a competing company, so that company is who they will refer you to if you use them and they feel a captioned telephone is a necessary service. And I spoke with a representative with FTRI (Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc.), who does have one CapTel that they sometimes provide. She said interested parties should call 1-800-222-3448 (voice) or 1-888-447-5620 (TTY) to discuss their options with an FTRI representative. Next week’s episode of TV2’s Front Porch Conversations features an interview with Phyllis Doty and Catherine Rountree.

MEMBER SERVICES TIP OF THE WEEK

In an effort to reduce the cost of printing the weekly newsletter, ACV uses abbreviations and acronyms throughout the FNN. You can find a list of those used to describe locations around the Village on the front page of each FNN.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Eleanore Catarious–386-658-5251

thee. Corny, huh, but did you get the message?

A special thank you is due to all of you who have put forth the special effort of completing and returning a huge number of blue Monthly Volunteer Hours Reports for January. By completing these reports, they give us the most accurate compilation of hours worked by volunteers. We need to continue this effort. Blank forms can be found at various volunteer areas in addition to the brown box located in the MS lobby. It is

not too late to get started for February or to return the outstanding January reports. I know all of you have heard about the INVISIBLE MAN! But what you haven’t heard is that he was a volunteer. The story goes that he went to the office of the volunteer coordinator and said that he did not feel like he was needed at the GSC desk. He wondered about the necessity of having someone there as long and as often as they are scheduled. He said that he felt “invisible” — not really necessary. However, after a brief conversation, the coordinator found out that had he not been present when he was, several people would not have received the kind and caring assistance they received from him, or the directions they needed to find their way, or heard the words of encouragement he shared with them. Remember, none of us is invisible. Each volunteer is vital in the link of communication where we are serving. Currently, due to illnesses, there are some immediate 2-hour shifts available at the GSC desk. Please call me or Kathleen Johnson at 658-5573 or me at 658-5251. When a kind heart comes smiling, an angel is never far behind. —Author Unknown

THE RUSTIC SHOP

Myra Webb, Reporter

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th of February. It is customary to give gifts to the one you love. The best definition I know is 1 Corinthians 13:4–7; “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice, but rejoices when the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance”. Our world could use nothing more than love and caring for each other. Just stick your head in the door and please consider a special Valentine’s treat for your love, yourself, or just a friend. Thanks to our own Jo England for helping us with the special Valentine’s items. You can be assured with Jo’s special touch, the items will be so unique. A very special event is just around the corner. Our Café will be celebrating Valentine’s with a great dinner. The Rustic Shop will be open and selling candy and flowers for your favorite friend or love. What a wonderful world it would be if each of us could reflect on our values spreading only love, honesty, and respect to each other. A great start would be on Valentine’s Day.

THE GARDEN CLUB Cindy Hett, Reporter

Do you have a black thumb? Always forgetting to water your houseplants? Well, this month’s speaker is our own Jane Burns, who will introduce you to the world of succulents and cacti. I’ve heard there will be some free plants to be given out to Garden Club members. So come see if you can discover a plant that may turn that black thumb of yours green on Feb. 18, in the DR at 2:00. Visitors are welcome.

SUWANNEE RIVER STUDIO Kathleen Putman, Reporter

The Suwannee River Studio will be open Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 12, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 noon for unstructured (no instructor), open studio time to work on your own projects. Bring your favorite art project in any medium, and bring a friend. Kathleen Putman will be leading a free Art Journaling: Artistic Meandering and Mess-making workshop Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 18, 2:00–4:00 p.m. Come explore your creativity through the art journal, a low-key, no-pressure approach to self-expression. Classes will cover the principles and elements of design, as well as hands-on techniques such as collage, image transfer, making brayer paper, etc. Come once or every week. Drawing and/or painting skills are not required. The recommended personal supply list is available at the IC. Group supplies cost: $3.00 per class.

THE VILLAGE VOICES Nancy Seale, Reporter

Because the theme for the 2020 edition of Village Voices is “Celebrations”, I find myself thinking about celebrations I have experienced. I, too, am looking for inspirations for my submissions for this upcoming edition. After all, the limit for the number of submissions is three, so I must choose wisely. I must say that Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, gave me wonderful ideas for my writing. “Why?” you ask. “What was celebratory about that day?” First of all, Feb. 2, 2020 (02/02/2020), was the first global palindrome day in 909 years. A palindrome reads the same when it is read forward and backwards. Since I love palindromes, I celebrated that! I was not here for the last one: 11/11/1111. The next one will be in 101 years. I will not be here for that one, either: 12/12/2121. As a retired kindergarten teacher, I have always enjoyed exposing my children to the fun of Groundhog Day. We would travel to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, via the internet and watch the recorded proceedings. And to be fair to the southern region of the US, we would also check in with Beauregard Lee in Georgia for his report. We would study groundhogs and enjoy an art project focusing on groundhogs. Then Sunday was the celebration of the biggest day in the NFL, Super Bowl LIV. Throughout the Super Bowl, they celebrated the 100th year of the NFL. Wow! Last, but most important to me, the Lord’s Supper was observed at Bixler Memorial Church Sunday morning. Indeed, that is absolutely reason to celebrate! As I have mentioned before, a sense of somberness may accompany a celebratory event, as in this case. As you arrive at the conclusion of this article, you may be confused about my ramblings. I am hoping that by reading my above examples of celebrations, you will be inspired to look for “celebrations” that are around you. Some are noisy, some involve numbers, some are very elementary, some are very somber, some are public, and some are private. The above are just examples of four very different kinds of celebrations that occurred on one day. Please be on the lookout for the common and uncommon celebrations that occur, and those can be inspirations for your creative expressions. They are waiting to be found.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

BUTTERFIELD ACRES James Sutter, Reporter

We have one BA birthday to celebrate this week: Mr. Ken Wood’s birthday is on the 7th. Happy birthday, Ken! We also have one BA wedding anniversary to celebrate this week: William and Yvonne Giles were married on Valentine’s Day. How romantic! Happy anniversary, you two. We hope the three of you have a fantastic week celebrating your special days. Did you know most ACV and Dowling Park neighborhoods don’t socialize as a group on a regular basis? It is wonderful that BA has been getting together for years and continues to congregate at least three times a year so that we stay involved in each other’s lives. Our next gathering isn’t until April, but I hope all our BA neighbors will plan to attend. In the meantime, wave and say hello as you see your neighbors outside. Invite a neighbor over for a cup of coffee. There are many small ways to be neighborly. Pick one you can enjoy and be neighborly. Thank you, David Howard, for working on the BA sign. We really appreciate your efforts to help it look more inviting.

CARTER HOUSE Connie Wood, Reporter

What a nice surprise we had yesterday; the weather was just so nice and pleasant. Let’s hope it lasts a while. Here at CH, we had quite a few birthdays this month. Birthday wishes go to Beth Faeber, Patricia Moseley, Carmen Doncel-Whitney, and Gail Heflin.

Evelyn McIntyre’s grandson, Leonard Barrett, was here to visit her Friday and Saturday, which made her so happy to have them here. I want to say thank you to Suzette, one of the workers here, for making us chocolate chip cookies, and I also thank the library workers as they are most helpful to me and everyone I know. We are so fortunate to have so many people who are here working so hard to keep things going smoothly and efficiently. If you just want somewhere to go to unwind and have coffee and relax, Starbooks is the place to be on Tuesday morning at 9:30. I will leave you with this to think about: Never regret a day in your life; good days give you happiness and bad days give you experience.

DOWLING HOUSE Janice Harris, Reporter

Mary Jane Holler, Tom Mills, David Vignali, and Marvin Wallace rode the bus to the Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, on Jan. 29. Mary Jane reported that the trip on the luxury bus allowed them to visit many vendors on site that offered information and useful objects. Senior performances entertained them. Lunch was provided by a local company with a food truck. Mary Jane enjoyed lunch with a gracious lady from Miami Gardens. They were also given fresh produce from the farm-share program. Happy belated birthday to Val Miller on Jan. 30. Upcoming birthdays in DH are Feb. 11, Marvin Wallace and Norma Jean Combass; Feb. 16, Evelyn Miller; and Feb. 21, Virgil Foxx. Love and prayers for a speedy recovery to Glynn Dasher. This past weekend, Celeste Cook was blessed with a visit from her youngest son, Aaron Dax Cook from Jacksonville, Aaron’s daughter, Ayslin Marie Cook, and Celeste’s middle son, Jayson Stringfellow from Clermont. A HUGE THANK YOU to Cora Huckaba, Sylvia Fraser, and Audrey Barfuss for helping to make valentines for GSC. Eighty Cards were made, and Cora made some beautiful hand-drawn cards.

Is anybody already tired of the elections yet? Get ready for the TV adds over and over again. I heard someone say “The only thing bad about PRACTICAL JOKERS is that they get ELECTED.” Just saying. How does Mother Nature know to make it rain on the first Saturday of the month? With only a handful of vendors braving the nasty weather, the turnout for the monthly market day was very small. Last week on the 28th, you were missed at the DMA/DPN organizational meeting if you didn’t make it. Bless their hearts, Louis and Betty Driggers, along with Norm and Norma Powell, are taking a back seat and a much deserved rest. We, the neighbors of DMA/DPN, owe a big “THANK YOU” to these couples and others who have also assisted over the years. Audrey Murray is staying on with us as entertainment and to keep us straight. We selected individuals to replace those who have done such a great job. They will be a hard act to follow, believe me. The new folks to try to fill those shoes are Gail Campbell as treasurer, Sharon Montesano as secretary, Audrey Murray as entertainment, and myself as chairperson. We promise to do our best and can ALWAYS use your help and/or suggestions. My stomach is flat; the L is just silent. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift! As you know, I am always looking for community information to put in my weekly report. Your input is most appreciated and needed. My email address is [email protected], and I can be reached at home at 658-2113 and on my cell at (239)404-0329. As for the birthdays and anniversaries, I must apologize that I overlooked a birthday on the 9th of January, which was celebrated by Gail Chapman. Sorry I missed you, Gail, hope you had a good one. I see this week Lorraine Casey celebrated on the 2nd, and coming

up next week, Earl Clement will be another year younger on the 8th. We hope to see you folks at the birthday party next Tuesday. Have a happy birthday. For all our veterans, our next Hooked on Heroes fishing trip is coming up the first week of April on Saturday the 7th. Look for more information from Member Services on Page 3. I drove the bus to Steinhatchee for the event in October 2018, missed out on all of 2019, but really look forward to this April’s trip. Mark your calendar to step aboard. A young police recruit was asked during a pre-

employment interview, “What would you do if you had to arrest your mother?” Without a moment’s hesitation, he replied, “I would call for backup, Sir.” From the middle of a dusty, bumpy dead end road, 102nd place, remember, seat belts are not as confining as a wheelchair, and a good time to keep your mouth shut is when you are in deep water. Never forget who is in charge. Isaiah 40:28–31.

EDGEWOOD TERRACE Ruthann Conway, Reporter

Good morning! Not many birthdays in February for ETers, so here goes for the whole month: Mary Ann Reach and Ruthann Conway celebrate their birthdays on Feb. 16, and Carol Sciarroni celebrates her birthday on Feb. 23. Happy, happy birthday to everyone. Congratulations are in order for Dr. Joyce Taylor, 658-3209, as she has accepted the vice presidency for ET. President is Tom Rumbaugh, 658-

3058, and secretary/treasurer is Verna Piper Simpson, 658-3753. All the officers are happy to take your suggestions for ET and ACV. Many of you may remember former ETers Bob and Joyce Comerford. Bob passed away Jan. 26 in Lynchburg, Virginia. “A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, in Blackstone, Virginia.” If you would like to express your sympathies, Joyce’s address is 30 Monica Blvd., Unit 201, Lynchburg, VA 24502. The other day, Rudy, my dog, and I spoke with Phil and Carol Sciarroni and Polly, their dog, who were out enjoying the almost warm weather tooling around in the golf cart. Polly was sitting on Carol’s lap and fiercely defended Carol by growling and barking. Rudy understood her meaning and walked as far away as his lease would take him. Polly may be small, but she means business. Away from Carol’s lap, Polly is a charmer. A gentle reminder to those of us who are late risers: The last Saturday of this month is Feb. 29. We won’t have another chance for four years to have breakfast on that date with each other. Come to the Village Café, Dutch treat, at 9:00 a.m. to chat and enjoy the fellowship with your neighbors. I’ll set two alarm clocks so I won’t miss this month — cross my heart. Oh, and remember to call me with your news. Until next week ...

PARK OF THE PINES Bob Reynolds, Reporter

We have been in south Florida as you read this, having done a bit of kayaking at Hardy Lake (hopefully) for two days. Then we’ll be visiting with Liz’s brother, Roy, and his wife, Tiny, not far from there. We’ll be heading home Saturday (the 8th), so we’ll be anxious to hear the news of your adventures for this past week, as usual. Lillian Shuman is having a birthday next week, on the 16th, but it is so close to that publication date that I wanted to give you fair notice ahead of time. Other than what has been said, I’ll try to remember what we did, whom we visited, where it was, and any historical points of interest that can be passed on to you for your further education. That’s the least I can do, folks! Have a great week, folks!

opportunity to connect with people from there is coming up soon. The president of Harbinger Bible Conference, Mr. Don Ducharme, will be here at the Village on Monday, Feb. 10, at 5:00 p.m. If you have ever attended a Harbinger Bible Conference in New Hampshire or here at the Village, or if you would just like to know more about the Conference, please come and meet the president and hear about the future plans of the conference. If you would be interested in attending and would like more information, please contact Dr. Michael Saunders at (407) 668-6509 (leave a message), or call or visit him at the DH front desk when he is working. Or you can call Doug Mabey at 647-6624. Thank you.

NANCY HARRISON, CPA Nancy Harrison, CPA is holding office hours every Tuesday from 9:15 a.m. until 12:00 noon, Feb. 4–April 15, 2020. She will be answering questions related to tax issues and collecting documents to prepare your income tax return. Please email Nancy at [email protected] or call her at (386) 249-2944 if you would like an organizer to assist you in gathering the information needed to prepare your return.

RIDE-ABOUT Did you know that you can ride the Ride-About free of charge? Gather friends and neighbors (minimum of three people), pick a date, call or text CrackerJack Dixon, and he’ll see if he can get a driver for your excursion. If you have family or friends passing through from out of town, you can book your date; but you don’t need three people, as long as they are from “away”! We have a few types of tours: general tour, which incorporates the 10-year plan and the Lopin’ Gopher trail; gazebo tour; and Heritage Trail tour. Remember, in inclement weather, the plastic window sides need to be down, so please refrain from wearing cologne, perfume, aftershave, or anything that might set off an asthma attack in someone else. Be kind to your neighbor!

SUWANNEE BELLE PONTOON BOAT The Belle of the Suwannee has been relaunched following its low-river hiatus. Two regular, 50-minute trips will be available each week on a first-come, first-served basis: Tuesdays and Fridays at 2:30 beginning Feb. 18. You must reserve a seat ahead of time by calling Ann Bembry at 658-5400. The boat can accommodate 10 adult-equivalent passengers per trip. There is no charge for the boat ride, which is only available to ACV members, their guests, and guests of the Conference & Retreat Center. You should arrive no less than 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time (the boat will launch at its launch time; if you are late, you will be left behind). The boat launches from the dock behind CCC and returns to the same dock. You can use the ACV shuttle bus as transportation to and from CCC (stops are scheduled for 1:55 and 3:55). Please be aware that the skipper and mate have been instructed to not help passengers descend the boat ramp. They will help you on and off the boat, but no more than that. Also, please do not board the boat unless the skipper and mate are there, watching and assisting. No one should board the boat without the skipper and mate present.
