EMBO Fellowships

x

Young scientists actively seek EMBO Long-Term Fellowships for postdoctoral research to fund and support their internationally mobile careers. Hundreds of scientists also benefit each year from EMBO Short-Term Fellowships, returning to their home laboratories with new skills as well as contacts for future collaborations.

EMBO Members and EMBO Young Investigators rigorously review all applications to EMBO Fellowships for their scientific potential. A core programme since the 1960s, EMBO Fellowships has benefited thousands of early career scientists.

Short-Term Fellowships

Short-Term Fellowships fund research visits of up to three months to laboratories in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The aim is to facilitate valuable collaborations with research groups applying techniques that are unavailable in the applicant's laboratory. Short-Term Fellowships are not awarded for exchanges between two laboratories within the same country. Short-Term Fellowships are intended for joint research work rather than consultations.

All applications should focus on the benefit to the home laboratory and involve movement between countries – one of which must be an EMBC Member State. (For applicants from a laboratory within a non-member state, the Short-Term Fellowships are for a fixed duration of 90 days). The fellowships cover travel plus subsistence of the fellow only and not of dependents.

Long-Term Fellowships

The EMBO Long-Term Fellowships are awarded for a period of up to two years and support post-doctoral research visits to laboratories throughout Europe and the world*. International exchange is a key feature in the application process.

All fellowships must involve movement between countries. The receiving institute or the applicant's nationality must be from one of the EMBC Member States.

DFG Funding Programmes

The DFG is the self-governing organisation for science and research in Germany. It serves all branches of science and the humanities. In organisational terms, the DFG is an association under private law. Its membership consists of German research universities, non-university research institutions, scientific associations and the Academies of Science and the Humanities.

Early Career Support Outstanding science and research need creative people and innovative ideas. This is why the DFG's funding programmes place particular emphasis on supporting young researchers. Flexible funding instruments are tailored to meet the specific needs of young scientists and academics, thereby enabling them to pursue their research careers. Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowships

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation promotes academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany.

The research fellowships and research awards allow scientists and scholars to come to Germany to work on a research project they have chosen themselves together with a host and collaborative partner. Scientists or scholars from Germany can also profit from the Foundation's support and carry out a research project abroad as a guest of one of more than 26,000 Humboldt Foundation alumni worldwide - the Humboldtians.

Programmes for postdoctoral researchers

Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers from abroad to sponsor a 6 to 24 month research stay at a research institution in Germany.

Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers from Germany to carry out a long-term research project (6 to 24 months) in cooperation with an academic host at a research institution abroad. The host must be an academic working abroad who has already been sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation.

Georg Forster Research Fellowship (HERMES) for Postdoctoral Researchers for academics from developing countries to do a research project relevant to development policy which, being carried out in Germany, facilitates the transfer of knowledge and technology to developing and threshold countries. Duration: 6 to 24 months plus a subsequent Return Fellowship lasting 12 months.

Capes-Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers from Brazil to sponsor a 6 to 24 month research stay at a research institution in Germany.

Programmes for junior research group leaders

Sofja Kovalevskaja Award for successful top-flight junior researchers who may use the award to spend five years carrying out research of their own choice at research institutions in Germany and building up their own working groups. Value of the award: 1.65 million EUR.
