Hiss, rattle and roll! When Smiley said the Elks is serving fresh

rattlesnake as part of their Super Bowl festivities, he

wasnt spoong! Smiley and Leo Schakosky went

on a rattlesnake roundup this past fall. Smiley kep

them penned up in his shop this winter. Yesterday

he had a crew cleaning the snakes for the occasion

On hand were Bob Kemp, Tim Newton, Leo and

Smiley to slick them up. So, if youve never had

rattlesnake before, heres your chance. Another

unique cuisine on the menu Sunday are every

    cattlemans delight: Rocky Mountain Oysters

(While playing with the diamondbacks, we also

spied a humongous pile of ribs being thawed out

for the less adventurous Super Bowl party-goers.)Careful with those things, fellas!

Montana Farmers Union Board Secretary-reasurer Erik Somereld visited with staff rom althree o Montanas delegates in Washington D.Cregarding Canadas current wheat grading system. Tiscomes on the heels o a letter Senator ester sent to

U.S. rade Representative Michael Froman requestingthe ambassador address the issue with the Canadiangovernment. Under the current system, when Montana wheatcrosses the border it is automatically downgraded toeed, the lowest quality designation. However, the UnitedStates has made it a priority to airly examine wheatimported rom Canada. Somereld spoke on behal oMontana producers during his visit with the senatorTis discrepancy leads to an unair disadvantage orMontana armers who work tirelessly to provide high-

quality wheat. MFU is in avor o standards that dontunairly discount Montana grain, said Somereld. Paul Kanning, MFU Board Member and armerin Flaxville, grows spring wheat. Currently he sells hiswheat in state, but would consider doing business withCanada i it made financial sense to do so. What the L? Why is

it Super Bowl 50? When it comes to the SuperBowl, its the only thing in lie thatseems to use Roman numeralsbesides old clocks.

Te NFL broke its traditiono using Roman numerals or theSuper Bowl and branded its 2016championship game as Super Bowl50 instead. It was a decision that the leagueoriginally announced in June 2014,when the logos or the game in SantaClara, Cali., were revealed. In thepress release, the NFL explained thechange as a way to urther elevate

and celebrate the historic 50th SuperBowl. Unsurprisingly, NFL playersreally dont care. While celebrating the SuperBowls golden anniversary certainlymakes sense as motivation to call thegame Super Bowl 50 complete withgolden numbers, logos and lettering, the act that the Roman number or50 is L is also likely a contributingactor. Frankly, Super Bowl L isntthe most attractive title to market orcreate a logo or. Te use o Roman numbersdidnt become an NFL traditionuntil Super Bowl V in 1971. Te NFLhas already said that the traditiono using Roman numerals will bereinstated in 2017 with Super BowlLI at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Because it is, in many ways, unique to the Super Bowl, McCarthysays. It provides even more gravitasto an event thats a tradition thatsdecades long. It is unique. At theNFL, we like to stand out and heresone way that is un to do so. We also know that teachersacross the country appreciatekeeping the Roman numeral systemalive.

Rattlesnake ExpertsWhen it comes to catchin & cookin

rattlesnakes, the fellows on this page

    know how its done.

Pictured above is Tim Newton, Smiley

    Johnson and Leo Schakosky skinning

    one of the creepy crawlers.

At left, Tim cleans the innards which,

    surprisingly, is nearly all lungs.

Below, Bob Kemp and Tim take a

    measurement of a rattlesnake skin,

right down to the buttons; 54 inches,

    says the Craftsman tape measure.

Had the head still been attached, it

would have been closer to 56 inches

thats knocking on the door of a

    ve-foot diamondback!

    If youve never eaten rattlesnake

before, take it from these guys, Its

very much like gnawing on a chicken

neck. Not much meat, but tasty!
