Happiness . Happi-ness features interviews with well-known psychia-

trists, celebrities, New Testament scholars, physicists, and priests that uncover the deeper answers to life's most pro-found questions. Eric Johnson and Jennifer Milani present the central ideas from the interviews, explaining difficult concepts and proposing engaging questions. Interviewees include Edu-ardo Verastegui, Gary Habermas, Leah Darrow, Dr. John Lennox, Dr. Jan Holden, Dr. Aaron Kheriaty, Fr. Robert J. Spizter, S.J., PhD, and John Chavez.

Using Fr. Spitzer's proven paradigm, "The Four Levels of Happiness", as our cornerstone (episode 1), we move through the remaining six episodes dealing with unhappiness and de-pression, and then to evidence for our transcendent and eter-nal life. We examine the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and fi-nally, we learn how to properly deal with and benefit from suffering.

2018 Public Policy Advocacy Weekend: February 10-11, 2018

Advocacy Issue: Passage by Congress of The Dream Act

In today’s first reading from the Book of Job, Job begins to lose hope when trials set in. In the second reading Paul presses on as does Jesus who cures the ill and those possessed by demons although the day has passed and it is already sun-set. We cannot allow young people who have applied them-selves, worked diligently and desire to contribute to our U.S. society and economy to be brutally turned away and sent back to their countries of origin where they may not know either the culture or the language. It is currently estimated that ap-proximately 800,000 young people qualify as DREAMERS. It is estimated that 91% are employed. If they are deported over 700,000 jobs would be lost to the economy. Those who work pay taxes and contribute to the economic growth of our na-tion.

Let there be light…

Let us grow in our dependence on God everyday. (Reflection on Mark 1:29-39)

Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. Among those whom Jesus encountered ill was a family member of the Twelve. Whether or not people belonged to the Twelve, all experi-enced the limitations of our human condition, and were in need of the help that Jesus provided. The Twelve themselves became instruments to bring Jesus to their own family. Living out our faith: Be a disciple to your own family members. Take the time to acknowledge their need for Jesus, and be an instrument of their encounter with Christ.

When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. By these almost insignificant verses, Mark brings to our attention the universal need for Jesus and Jesus’ universal response to each of us. Living in a time when we can easily be distracted from acknowledging our need for Jesus, certain life circumstances, like illness, open our eyes once more to the limits of the hu-man condition and open us up to God. Living out our faith: In prayer, recognize and acknowledge your dependence on God. Find peace in the reality that God co-vers your back.

He told them, "Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come." So he went into their syna-gogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Gali-lee. Jesus sought and made himself available to everyone by his preaching and healing. By preaching, so that we come to the full knowledge of God. By healing, because God does not leave us wanting but provides and addresses our limitations. Living out our faith: Everyday, grow in your sense of depend-ence in God. Allow prayer and study to become opportunities for Jesus to preach to you and to heal you.

An Encounter with a Daughter and Her Father Last Sunday, I began with the interviews of our Confir-

mation candidates, and met with a daughter and her father. Prior to these interviews, I gave the candidates a worksheet containing a scenario to which they must respond. And their response must be informed and guided by the Scriptures and the Catechism.

I am most pleased to see that daughter and her father worked on the scenario together, finding ways how to navi-gate the Scriptures and the Catechism, which even involved asking his mother about how to use the Catechism.

While I pay attention to the response of the daughter to the given scenario, I am pleased that the process itself became a learning opportunity for both the daughter and the father, in the sharing of the faith, in encountering the Word of God and the faith of the Church as presented in the Catechism.

Thank you, God, for guiding this daughter and father. Help the other candidates and their families. May this simple process enable them to celebrate their faith together, and take ownership of the wonderful gift, that is, our Catholic faith.
