One of the highlights of Catholic Schools Week was Tuesday morning’s
Eucharistic Procession, following all-school Mass,
to and through the school building!
Students and teachers prayed the rosary, sang hymns, and
spent time adoring the Blessed Sacrament as a community.

Holy Family Icon As you may know, recently I took a group of parishioners on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We carried many of your intentions with us as we visited the places where Jesus lived.
One of the places we visited was Bethlehem. Bethlehem had historically been a predominantly Christian town surrounded by Muslims. In the last half century, much has changed in the Middle East, particularly in Israel. Jewish immigration and the State of Israel’s expansion pushed many Palestinian Muslims into new neighborhoods and involvement by other Muslim nations has lead to serious conflicts. Christians living in the Holy Land are a very small minority and often suffer greatly. Bethlehem has experienced a great loss in its Christian population. But the Christians who remain there and in other places provide the valuable service of keeping alive the Christian Shrines, commemorating and preserving the memory of Christ.
When our pilgrims arrived in Bethlehem, we met a group of Christians who run a co-op to support their families. They presented our group with a beautiful Icon of the Holy Family expressing our oneness in Christ. The Icon of the Holy Family is on display near the Baptismal Font and will be placed permanently on the wall next to the font.
Meanwhile, providentially, our Knights of Columbus Council asked if they could lead our parish in a Consecration to the Holy Family. It seems with these two unexpected and powerful references to the Holy Family just days apart, God must want Assumption Parish to focus on holiness in the family. As pastor, I don’t want to get in the way of that!
So, as a parish and as individual families, let’s prepare our hearts for a Consecration to the Holy Family on the weekend of March 3rd at all Masses.
Families can prepare for the Consecration by one or more of these actions:
- Praying the Rosary together at least once a week - Fasting from something once a week - Taking time before a meal to pray for the special intentions of each family member - Take time to visit the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel (the Parish Office can give you the door code if you don’t know it) - Start praying the Consecration Prayer together as a family (Individual prayer cards will be available in a few weeks.)
God bless, Fr Keller
Consecration to the Holy Family
O Lord Jesus, you lived in the home of Mary and Joseph in Nazareth. There you grew in age, wisdom and grace as you prepared to fulfill your mission as our Redeemer. We entrust our family to you.
O Blessed Mary, you are the Mother of our Savior. At Nazareth you cared for Jesus and nurtured him in the peace and joy of your home. We entrust our family to you. O Saint Joseph, you provided a secure and loving home for Jesus and Mary, and gave us a model of fatherhood while showing us the dignity of work. We entrust our family to you. Holy Family, we consecrate ourselves and our family to you. May we be completely united in a love that is lasting, faithful and open to the gift of new life. Help us to grow in virtue, to forgive one another from our hearts, and to live in peace all our days. Keep us strong in faith, persevering in prayer, diligent in our work, and generous toward those in need. May our home, O Holy Family, truly become a domestic church where we reflect your example in our daily life. Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

Week 10 Meditation on the Corporal Works of Mercy
In the last 9 weeks, we have discussed the four Natural (also known as the Cardinal) Virtues;
Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance as well as the three Theological virtues; faith, hope and charity.
Christians express these virtues in many ways, but preeminent expressions are in the Corporal Works of Mercy and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Today, let’s look at the Corporal Works of Mercy.
The Corporal Works of Mercy are:
- To feed the hungry; - To give drink to the thirsty;
- To clothe the naked; - To shelter the homeless;
- To visit the sick; - To ransom the captive/or visit the imprisoned
- To bury the dead.
The Corporal Works of Mercy are spontaneous expressions of the theological virtue of Charity, but they are also responsibilities growing from the natural virtue of Justice. Christians combine these two virtues to reach out
to others in need.
In modern times it is common to think that these are responsibilities of “society” or the “government”, but that is only because of the Christian influence on western civilization. If one visits a non-Christian nation, one will be reminded that no such responsibility is conceived of in that society and very little governmental help is offered.
The Catholic Church is the ultimate expression of the Corporal Works of Mercy. Every parish performs these
actions in one way or another and to some degree. Simply belonging to and contributing to a parish means you are participating in the Corporal Works of Mercy. Many parish organizations and contribution envelopes focus on the Corporal Works of Mercy. But at the same time, each Catholic should seek to embody these actions in his or her
attitudes and behavior.
Jesus Christ gives us the reason why the Corporal Works of Mercy are so important and He also gives a preview of our own Judgment when He says, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do for me.”
Questions:
Am I generous? Do I look for ways to help others in need on my own?
How do I participate in parish activities that serve others?

Recently, the 5th graders got to experience what life was like in colonial times during social studies class. They made homemade soap, washed clothes by hand, and made their own ball and cup toy. The students also
made butter by shaking heavy whipping cream in jars until it became solid. The best part was eating their
“churned” butter on crackers!

A special blessing of throats occurs on the feast of St. Blaise, February 3. What is the origin of this? St. Blaise, Biagio in Italian, Blasco or Blas in Spanish, was a bishop of Sebaste, Armenia, in modern Turkey, who was martyred for witnessing to the faith. He was tortured and beheaded for his beliefs by the local Roman governor around AD 316. This is all that is known about him, the rest being legend. We know much more about devotion to and the popularity of St. Blaise than historical facts. The special blessing of throats associated with St. Blaise is due to a miracle attributed to him. While in prison, he miraculously saved a boy choking on a fish bone. Early in the sixth century, evidence exists in the Eastern Church that Blaise was prayed to for aliments of the throat. To this day, his feast is a holy day in the Eastern Church. In the ninth century, veneration of St. Blaise came to the Western Church and became very popular. Blessing of the throats with crossed candles began in the 1500s, the height of devotion to St. Blaise, and that blessing is still part of the devotion of the Catholic Church. No matter what the facts are, St. Blaise is a constant reminder to us of God's care and concern for us in our weakness, sickness, and limited human existence. God's healing touch is with us always. St. Blaise's celebration is one of the ways in which we highlight and thank God for that care and concern. © 2011 Liturgical Publications Inc
