April 1 — Dwelling in Mystery
Rekindle Our Sense of Wonder
Thou, who art the eternal God and our Father, hast set before each of us an
untraveled way full of beauty and mystery, and calling for courage and the
spirit of adventure. Grant us Thy kindly light to lead us onward. To the youth
of this day in all nations, give us a vision of Thy purpose for their lives; and to
us who are older, grant a return of the wonder which was the glory of our
youth and which as we beheld it brought Thy light into our hearts. Oh let not
the wonder fade or the light become darkness, lest we lose our way. In His
Name, Amen.
By John Malcus Ellison (1889-1979) From Conversations with God, Two Centuries of Prayers by African Americans
by James Melvin Washington, Ph.D.
Votive Candles in Narthex The votive candles in the church Narthex are for anyone to use at any time. Many Lutheran Churches use votive candles which can be part of your Sunday devotions. They are also often lit during the liturgy of Good Friday. Within the Nordic Lutheran churches of Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, all High Church Lutheran denominations, the use of votive candles is commonplace and most, if not all, churches and chapels will have a votive candle holder.

Portland Columbia Symphony presents A Concert for Hope
World-renowned trumpeter and survivor-turned-cancer-research-advocate Ryan Anthony
performs James Stephenson's Concerto for Hope, written especially for him. The piece is
bookended by Vivaldi's sparkling Concerto for Two Trumpets and Dvorak's infectiously
optimistic Eighth Symphony.
The concert takes place on Sunday, March 15 at Mt. Hood Community College, beginning at
3 pm. Tickets are available at 503-234-4077 or pcsymphony.org.
Reading John in Matthew’s Lent While our gospel readings this year
come mostly from Matthew’s gospel,
we will be reading in church verses
that come from the gospel of John.
Gospel is a word that means, “Good
News.” During the season of Lent our
Adult Education Time will focus on
John’s Gospel and what John wants us
to know about Jesus. We will begin
this week focusing on the first chapter.
Dr. Lewis suggests that reading the
first chapter will tell you what John is
all about. Let’s see if you agree. Come
downstairs to the Adult Ed room after
Sunday worship! I will be using her book; “John” is from the
Fortress Biblical Preaching Commentaries. Rev.
Dr. Karoline M. Lewis is the Marbury E. Anderson
Chair in Biblical Preaching at Luther Seminary.
Thank You! Gracias! Thank you to the members of
Holy Cross/Santa Cruz for

Gracias a los miembros de

escuela dominical! ¡Hicimos
mucho con todas las manos
amigas!

You are invited to The Living Table! We are a community that meets every Wednesday to share a meal, join in prayer, and participate in activities that enrich
our lives. The evening is a contemporary expression of worship, for
everyone to participate in as they choose. When we gather at the table, it can be for whatever you need: communing, dining,
conversing, or resting your head. We empower our community to share ideas so we can
collaborate in the process of trying and experimenting. Even in our failures, we know the process will enrich our lives.
We invite you to learn more about this community by joining us on Wednesday evenings at 6 pm.
