MESSAGES

From humble beginnings as a fledgling seven-team league on the Western Canadian prairies in 1966 to the largest junior hockey league of its kind in the world today, no one would have envisioned the growth the Western Hockey League has experienced over the last 50 years.

The WHL has certainly come a long way and this is in large part due to the commitment WHL Club ownership has made in setting the standard for player development on a worldwide basis. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing an ideal environment for the top prospects in the system to reach their potential both on and off the ice. From our world class coaching and arena facilities, to our comprehensive player safety and professional development initiatives and our fully guaranteed player education and scholarship program, the WHL is a leader in every category.

As we celebrate our 50th season, we not only salute our founders – Scotty Munro, Bill Hunter, Del Wilson and Jim Piggott – but also our owners and community leaders who, together with long-time WHL President Ed Chynoweth, have been instrumental in the establishment and growth of our League. We also want to pay tribute to the players, coaches, managers and staff, along with the officials, who over the past 50 years have made this League what it is today. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our fans, sponsors, broadcasters and media from throughout the League. Without your loyal support, WHL Clubs would not be in a position to continue offering our players the world class experience they deserve.

We trust you will join us in celebrating the WHL’s 50th Season as we prepare to host a series of special events throughout the 2015-16 season including the Canada – Russia Series in November in Kelowna and Kamloops, the CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game in January in Vancouver and the MasterCard Memorial Cup in May in Red Deer.

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. The 2015-2016 season brings winds of change to our Hockey Club with an entirely new coaching staff and a roster turnover that we have not experienced in years.

Despite the high turnover and cyclical nature of Major Junior Hockey our organization expects to make the playoffs every year and this year is no different. Thanks in part to the quality scouting and coaching we have made the playoffs all 17 years we have been in Cranbrook, all while finishing with a .500 or better record for a WHL record 16th consecutive seasons (both are the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on-ice success. This year’s team will be the youngest in franchise history, but our expectations for success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

ICE NOTES VS. EDMONTONICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE enter tonight’s game with a 10-45-5-0 record (8-19-3-0 at home, 2-26-2-0 on the road, 3-5 in overtime, 1-0 in shootouts)…The ICE will not qualify for the playoffs this season for the first time since the 1997-98 campaign, while also ending a WHL record 16 year run of seasons with a .500 or better record (1999-2015)…After this evening’s action KOOTENAY will wrap up a three game home stand February 27 against PORTLAND before embarking on a four game road trip beginning March 1 in MEDICINE HAT.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: KOOTENAY is currently carrying 22 players (two goaltenders, seven defensemen and 13 forwards)...The ICE roster is made up of two 1995-born players, two 1996-born players, ten 1997-born players, seven 1998-born players and one 1999-born player...KOOTENAY has ten first-year players on its roster.

ONE YEAR AGO: After 60 games of the 2014-15 season the ICE were 31-27-1-1, after 61 games 31-27-1-2 and after 62 games 32-27-1-2.

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTLAST OUTING: Kole Gable helped himself to a couple of goals and Aaron Irving had a goal and two assists Wednesday night as the Edmonton Oil Kings cruised to a 5-1 win over the Portland Winterhawks. cThe Fort McMurray native had four goals coming into this season in 50 games and added to that total along with five shots on net earning himself the game’s first star.

LAST MEETING: Tonight marks the fifth of six meetings this season between the Oil Kings and Kootenay ICE. The two sides last met February 2 in Cranbrook, where five unanswered goals in the third period paced Edmonton to a 6-3 victory. Defenseman Ben Carroll led the way with a goal and two assists. Jesse Zaharichuk tallied twice for Kootenay.
