The Sacrifice of Isaac “The Talmud suggests the symbolic age of Isaac as thirty-three years of age.

Thus, Isaac was not a child, nor was he forced to do something he didn’t understand because he was an adult with full reason and will. Isaac

understood perfectly and cooperated willingly with his father Abraham. Who else was sacrificed at the age of thirty-three? Jesus Christ!”

Today, we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. On the Second of Lent, the Church always reads the account of Jesus’ Transfiguration in the Gospel. This year, we are in Cycle B of the three year Lectionary cycle, which means that we read about the Transfiguration of Jesus from the Gospel of Mark. As we beginning reading the passage, St. Mark tells us, “Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus.” In Cycle B of the Lectionary, the Gospel story of Jesus’ Transfiguration is paired with the First

Reading from the Book of Genesis about the Sacrifice of Isaac. What’s so special about the Sacrifice of Isaac and how is it connected to the Gospel? St. Mark does not tell us what Jesus was talking about with Moses and Elijah. In the Gospel of Luke, St. Luke tells us that Moses and Elijah spoke with Jesus about “His exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem” (Luke 9:31). Jesus was conversing about His Crucifixion with Moses and Elijah. Thus, the Transfiguration of Jesus is paired with the story of the Sacrifice of Isaac in the Lectionary readings because the Sacrifice of Isaac is a foreshadowing of the future Sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Notice how Jesus tells the Apostles at the end of the Gospel today to say nothing of what they have seen on the mountain until after He had been raised from the dead.

This story of the Sacrifice, or Binding, of Isaac, found in Genesis 22, is very rich theologically and full of symbolism. Abraham is a type of God the Father. His son, Isaac, is a type of Christ. On the third day, Abraham and Isaac go up the mountain. The reference to the third day points to the day of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead, Who rose from the dead on the third day. Abraham took the wood for the sacrifice and laid it on Isaac’s shoulders. The wood of the burnt offering that is laid on Isaac points to the wood of the Cross laid on Jesus’ shoulders. Where does Jesus carry the wood of the Cross? Jesus carries the wood of the Cross for His Sacrifice up a mountain: up Mount Calvary. Just as Isaac is bound and laid on the altar for sacrifice, Jesus was bound to the altar of the Cross for sacrifice. The ram caught in the thicket represents Christ plaited with a crown of thorns and fastened with nails to the Cross. The Greek word for ram is krios. Isn’t krios very similar to Christ? A ram is a male sheep/lamb. Christ the Ram is the Lamb of God that God the Father provides to be sacrificed on our behalf for our sin.

In addition, let us take a look at the age of Isaac. Too often, in this passage of Scripture, Isaac is represented a boy. Many people do not like this story because they look at the story of the Sacrifice of Isaac as a story of God permitting child abuse. However, that is not the correct understanding of the story. According to Jewish rabbinical teaching, Isaac was not a boy or young child. According to the rabbis, Isaac was an adult. The Talmud suggests the symbolic age of Isaac as thirty-three years of age. Thus, Isaac was not a child, nor was he forced to do something he didn’t understand because he was an adult with full reason and will. Isaac understood perfectly and cooperated willingly with his father Abraham. In this image, we see a beautiful painting of the Sacrifice of Isaac. Here, the artist correctly portrays Isaac as an adult man, around the age of thirty-three. Who else was sacrificed at the age of thirty-three? Jesus Christ! The age of Jesus at His Crucifixion has long been believed to be thirty-three years old. Likewise, Jesus was not forced to sacrifice Himself on the Cross, but He understood perfectly and cooperated willingly with His Heavenly Father. Abraham offers his son Isaac in sacrifice on a mountain top, but the sacrifice was halted. God the Father offers His Son in sacrifice on a mountain top, Mount Calvary, but this sacrifice was not halted. A good friend of mine is Fr. Rich Simon. Fr. Simon taught me “dead languages” in the college seminary: Latin and Greek. He has a radio show on Relevant Radio now called “Fr. Simon Says,” and you may know him as the “Reverend Know-It-All.” Fr. Simon spoke about the Sacrifice of Isaac often. I remember Fr. Simon saying something about the Sacrifice of Isaac and the Sacrifice of Jesus that has struck me ever since I first heard it. Fr. Simon says, “the sacrifice of Isaac was not stopped, it was just postponed.” Please pray for the safety of all police officers and for all who serve and protect us. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and may St. Joseph pray for us! Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Z kolei baranek zaplatany w gąszczu to Chrystus cierniem ukoronowany i przybity gwoździami do Krzyża. Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

Mr. Lawrence Manetti, Principal

One of the many things I love about my job and St. Joseph is the opportunity our children have to participate in parish life, specifically in the Mass. This past Wednesday our first graders were in charge of our weekly Mass, and they with their buddies, (the seventh grade), were the choir. Our first graders read the reading and the petitions. They did an excellent job! From my experiences working at other parishes, this is not an opportunity all children have. Our children are the future leaders of our church. My hope is these opportunities will give them the courage and confidence to become the lectors and Eucharistic ministers of tomorrow. Sacramental Preparation – We want to congratulate our First Communion Class from our school and R.E. Program will receive the sacrament of Reconciliation next Saturday, March 3rd. Please keep them in your prayers. Registration 2018 – 2019 – Our open registration has begun. If you are interested in a Catholic Education for your children, please contact me at the school office, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss our school program. Through the Tax Credit Scholarship Program, fuds are available to families that qualify, to pay for tuition. The program is income based and will pay for 100, 75, or 50% of the tuition based on need.

Empower Illinois, one of the scholarship granting organizations, will open its site at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27th. We will open our school that evening for families who need help applying or need access to a computer.

Applications must be done on-line. For more information please contact me at the school office. Have a great week. God Bless. Lawrence Manetti Principal
