YOU’RE KIDDING ME, RIGHT?

That’s the question, I think, that might have gone through the mind of Abishai and even the disciples of Jesus. I mean it’s so counter-intuitive, to use a current and popular word. Why in the world would David not nail Saul to the ground when he had the opportunity? After all, David was being persecuted and pursued unjustly. Saul was jealous of David’s success and popularity. Saul being a little psychotic didn’t help either. But David would not take advantage of the defenseless king and exact an understandable revenge. He just took a spear and jug to use later to show that he had no intention to hurt Saul or usurp his power. For the moment at least, Saul got the message and called off the hunt. Here the restraint of David dif-fused a very volatile situation. Fast forward to Jesus and His time. The country, or Roman province of Palestine, was under the harsh and sometimes cruel occupation and dominance of Rome. The Romans were the enemy. They had no god, and if they did, there were a bunch of their gods to which they paid superstitious worship. They treated the native people cruelly as though they were lesser human beings, if even human at that. They imposed almost impossible living conditions and oppressed them. But Jesus would not back down. If you don’t forgive you won’t be forgiven, He said. If you keep on judging others harshly, the same will be meted out to you. If you condemn, you yourself will be roundly condemned. But…if you forgive, you will be forgiven; if you stop judging, you will not be judged; if you show mercy and love, the same will be shown to you. This kind of message and other difficult ones like it caused many to walk away and no longer hear the truth coming from the lips of Truth itself. The chal-lenge of Christianity is great, but the reward is greater. Fr. Scordo, OP

“When You Thought I Wasn’t Looking”

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you hand my first painting on the refrigerator, and I

immediately want to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to

be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me and I learned that

the little things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I heard you say a prayer, and I new there is a God I could

always talk to and I learned to trust in God.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and

I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had

nothing and I learned that those who have something should give to those who don’t.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you

didn’t feel good and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw tears come from your eyes and I learned that

sometimes things hurt, and it’s all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw that you cared and I wanted to be everything

that I could be.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I learned most of life’s lessons that I need to know to be a good

and productive person when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked at you and wanted to say, “Thanks for all the things I

was when you thought I wasn’t looking.”

This weekend we are introducing a new Responsorial psalm written by Fr. Ricky Manalo. It is a setting of Psalm 103, and titled, The Lord is Kind and Merciful. We use many of Fr. Manalo’s compositions including, Mass of Spirit and Grace, By the Waking of Our Hearts, With One Voice and We are Sent Into the World. Reverend Ricky Manalo, CSP, Ph.D. is a Paulist priest currently teaching at Santa Clara University and the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California. He studied composition and piano at the Manhattan School of Music, theology at the Washington Theological Union, liturgy and culture at the Graduate Theological Union and sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. Additionally, as an expert in the field, he has written numerous articles and books on pastoral ministry, liturgical music, liturgical enculturation, and intercultural communication. He is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, the Catholic Theological Society of America, the International Societas Liturgica, and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM). Fr. Manalo also holds the position of Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) since 2007. In July of 2018, Fr. Manalo was selected the Pastoral Musician of the year by NPM. The award surprised him. He was humbled and grateful, but noted that many pastoral musicians were deserving of the honor. Upon receiving the award he said, “it’s an affirmation that the people of God have been singing my music, and it’s my response to God’s grace.” Fr. Manalo also stated “Music is one of the most powerful symbols and artistic forms to inspire people’s imagination, to bring people back to God, through the nuances of the Gospel message. I have always believed that music is one of the most important tools for welcoming, drawing in, and inviting new encounters. Music touches the heart, and brings another dimension to what people might hear in the homily.” We couldn’t agree more! “The Lord is kind and merciful, merciful is the Lord!”

THE SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 24, 2019

First Reading: 1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23

Saul wanted to harm David and went into the desert to locate him. David and his companion Abishai visited Saul and his troops while they slept. Abishai wanted to kill Saul, but David would not allow it, as he refused to kill the Lord’s anointed. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:45-49

Paul portrays Adam as the first physical man and Jesus as the first man to give us our spirituality. One man was formed from dust, the other send down from heaven. Just as we resemble the first being physically, we should model ourselves after Jesus spiritually. Gospel: Luke 6:27-38

Jesus explains that loving only people who love us is no great achievement. He also reminds us that doing a favor for someone while expecting something in return is not what he asks of us. Instead, we should emulate God by being compassionate and non-judgmental, even towards individuals who hate and mistreat us.

The Food Pantry is in need of canned vegetables (regular and unsalted), canned soup and canned fruit. Please check expirations date. We are grateful for your donations.
