THIS WEEK AT THE CENTER… FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 22, 2020

SAINT TURIBIUS OF MOGROVEJO (1538-1606) March 23 In times of crisis, God always sur-prises the Church with unlikely saints, through whom Christ’s light radiates beyond their local communities to illu-mine the universal Church. Charles Bor-romeo was such a saint: appointed Arch-bishop of Milan at twenty-one by his papal uncle, epito-mizing the corruption that the reformers condemned, Charles instead inspired a revival that reinvigorated a Church devastated by the Reformation. His less well-known contemporary, Turibius of Mongrovejo, was God’s “saintly surprise” in the New World. Spanish-born lawyer, professor, head of the feared Inquisition, Turibius was still a layman when a grateful king appointed him Archbishop of far-off Lima. Once in Peru, however, Turibius was ap-palled at the abuse of indigenous peoples by the occupying conquistadores—his fellow countrymen—and by the com-plicity of the clergy. He became the natives’ devoted advo-cate, building churches, schools, hospitals, and the first seminary in the Americas, publishing catechisms and prayerbooks in the native languages he painstakingly mas-tered. Four hundred years later, whenever Pope Benedict welcomed Latin American bishops to Rome, he always invoked “the shining example of San Toribio.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Breaking Bread Homeless Ministries

News From The Streets…

Forever Sowing Seeds of Love

Part 2

By Mary Martha Primerano

Once the teenagers came up close, they saw Walt and rec-

ognized our SUV. One of them exclaimed, “Hey! I know

you! I remember you from when I was a little kid. You gave me

a blanket. And you read us Bible stories.”

That small statement is why we go out and encour-

age those who are broken, lost, or alone. Those teenagers

actually remembered the daily devotional Walt had read to

them, and it mattered. You see, I’ve heard it said before

that we may be the only Bible some people read. Our job is

to show them that there is a God in heaven who loves them

very much and has not forgotten them.

At Breaking Bread, we understand that there are

other ministries who come after us and reap the harvest of

our seeds sown, but that’s okay because that is how God’s

kingdom works. John 4:37 says, “For here the saying holds

true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’” Because of the exam-

ples Jesus and his disciples left us, we have come to realize

that we all work as one. If interested in volunteering please contact:

PAGINA 6 IV DOMINGO DE CUARESMA CICLO A 22 DE MARZO DEL 2020

LE VÁNTATE DE ENT RE LOS MUERTOS, Y C R ISTO SERÁ TU LUZ

San Juan 9,1.6-9.13-17.34-38.
