Pastor’s Corner Cont.

As we begin life’s journey as children, we know that we are fearfully, and wonderfully, made by God. Yet even from birth we are burdened with the sin of Adam and Eve. The sin that we are born into as the children of transgressors of God’s Laws itself condemns us. We also add to that burden daily in thought, word, and deed. The Bible has sharp words for those who deny this in 1 John 1:8 we hear, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” That is a lot of luggage to carry on this journey we call life.

We are creatures made by God, yet we cannot be with Him because He is Holy, and we are not. We are travelers looking for our home. That is where Epiphany comes in. The magi knew the Messiah and worshiped Him. We come to God by the work of the Holy Spirit. In John 16:13-14 we hear, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Through that declaration we know that Jesus is the Messiah who came to free us from the slavery of sin. We come together as God’s church, a community of saints who are at the same time sinners, to hear the Word through which the Spirit works. We are given Jesus righteousness. We are returned to the righteousness that Adam and Eve enjoyed in the perfect garden by this. We come home to our place in God’s grace and in His family. And home is a wonderful place.

Lord in Heaven, we thank you for the blessings of home. We thank you for the people we know and love. As we go through life remind us constantly of our true home in Your Church and in Heaven. Allow us to share our home with others. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

The theme has been set for the 2019 LCMS National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis, MN.

Real.Present.God. is based on passages from Psalm 46. We are looking forward to supporting our youth as they prepare for this adventure!

Support our Buena Vista Schools by clipping BOX TOPS EDUCATION coupons.

BOX TOPS are found on hundreds of products. A laminated list is in our Narthex next to the 3 drawer con-tainer to place clipped coupon donations. The coupons go to participating Buena Vista Schools. Each BOX TOP coupon earns $.10 for the school. Earnings are then applied to a collection drive for Field Trips; Class room supplies; Creative Arts; Sports equipment; Playground equipment; School events; and Book and Learn-ing tools, just to name a few.

This is a great community outreach project. Do you know of any other ways we can do Outreach here local-ly? Share your ideas with Pastor Becker or Barb. Thanks for your ideas and Blessings.

LifeLight

We invite you to join us for an exciting year as we start by studying "Romans" in 2 parts. Romans, one of the New Testament books written by the Apostle Paul, defends the essential teachings of Christianity and its mission to show that we are declared righteous through our faith in Christ and by God's gift of Grace. There is no way we can earn this by our works. Paul in Romans proves from scripture references that God declares us righteous through Christ alone who is the fulfillment of God's Old Testament promise of redemp-tion. He shows us that God has made us alive through Holy Baptism and has provided us with access to His Spirit.

LifeLight is a Bible study designed to enable students to experience God more fully through the study of the Bible in a small group setting. We meet Tuesday mornings 9:30 at Barb's for 9 weeks. Car pooling is available from Buena Vista. We are a satellite group with Bethle-hem Lutheran Church in Lakewood. We watch a pre-recorded video by Pastor Langewisch then verbally go through the worksheet for each session.

PULL TABS FOR RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE By collecting the aluminum tabs from your soda and other cans and turning them

in to our House, you help care for families while their children receive much-needed medical treatment. We typically earn more than $15,000 per year to help

support our families.

What is a pop tab?

Pop tabs are the little aluminum tabs from all kinds of cans: soda, some pet food, canned fruits, vegetables and more.

How do pop tabs help the Ronald McDonald House?

Once the pop tabs are collected, they are taken to be recycled in exchange for dollars, which support the children and families we serve at our Houses. Since 1996, the RMHCCF Pop Tabs program has collected over 197 tons of pop tabs and raised over $210,000 to benefit the children and families staying at the three Ronald McDonald House. Place tabs in the "house box" for the Ronald McDonald House in the Narthex and thanks for your Blessings.

Have you read any good Christian books lately? Here are two recommended, one by Gordon Gross and the other

myself.

"Mission at Nuremberg" The description reads:

Mission at Nuremberg is Tim Townsend’s gripping story of the American Army chaplain sent to save the souls of the Nazis incarcerated at Nuremberg, a compelling and thought-provoking tale that raises questions of faith, guilt, moral-ity, vengeance, forgiveness, salvation, and the essence of humanity.

Lutheran minister Henry Gerecke was fifty years old when he enlisted as an Army chaplain during World War II. As two of his three sons faced danger and death on the battlefield, Gerecke tended to the battered bodies and souls of wounded and dying GIs outside London. At the war’s end, when other soldiers were coming home, Gerecke was re-cruited for the most difficult engagement of his life: ministering to the twenty-one Nazis leaders awaiting trial at Nu-remburg.

Based on scrupulous research and first-hand accounts, including interviews with still-living participants and featuring sixteen pages of black-and-white photos, Mission at Nuremberg takes us inside the Nuremburg Palace of Justice, into the cells of the accused and the courtroom where they faced their crimes. As the drama leading to the court’s final judgments unfolds, Tim Townsend brings to life the developing relationship between Gerecke and Hermann Georing, Albert Speer, Wilhelm Keitel, Joachim von Ribbentrop, and other imprisoned Nazis as they awaited trial.

Powerful and harrowing, Mission at Nuremberg offers a fresh look at one of the most horrifying times in human his-tory, probing difficult spiritual and ethical issues that continue to hold meaning, forcing us to confront the ultimate moral question: Are some men so evil they are beyond redemption?

I am currently reading this most interesting book. It is available from Amazon for $10.24 Kindle.

"Joyfully Aging" by Richard Bimler The description reads:

If there is one thing we are all doing together in this life, it’s aging! We are all aging! More of us are growing older. And more of us are growing older, longer. So, what are you and I going to do about it? Answering this question is what Joyfully Aging is all about. It is about celebrating God’s gift of aging instead of moaning and complaining about old age. Even famous people may be called by a different name as they age. Remember Billy the Kid? He is aging well and living somewhere in southwest Florida, but now his friends call him “Willie the Geezer”! Celebrate the blessing of aging and the gift of life. In Joyfully Aging readers will gain insight on the limitless opportunity to witness their faith to others and live vibrant, grace-filled lives.

This is an uplifting and truly a joy to read. It is also available on Amazon for $2.99 Kindle.

If you have read a great Christian book and would like to share it with others feel free to send an article to Joanie for future Newsletters. Share the Blessings.
